This is the first video I’ve seen of yours and I found it incredibly helpful. I’m on our 6th year of homeschooling. We started with Torchlight years ago. I have decided to look back at level K for my 2nd graders for geography. I never would have thought of looking at it again if it weren’t for this video. Thank you! 😊

Hi! Have you ever heard of exploring the world through story? I’m going to try level A starting this summer. From my understanding it’s great for geography and has a classical approach. It’s secular too!

Yes. It's great. We did level A last year, and I got level B for this next year. My son learned a lot from the questions at the end of every lesson, and he enjoyed the stories.

I’m currently looking and BYL 0 and Torchlight K for my son. Would you recommend one over the other. I cant seem to make a decision. They both look great

Both are great programs! We did the geography portion from Torchlight K this past year, but we are going to do BYL O this upcoming year for our main curriculum because I felt that it was more cohesive across all subjects with the “around the world” theme (I also love how detailed it is on a daily basis regarding what to do - it’s pretty open and go from that perspective, but easily changeable if our schedule changes). Torchlight K wasn’t as cohesive across the different subjects in my opinion and I’ve heard that from others too. However I will be pulling the spines from Torchlight K and incorporating them for each country since I already have them and they are fantastic books! 🥰 hopefully that gives you some perspective and helps you make your decision! Either way you can’t go wrong!

Thank you! I’ve also heard that torchlight isn’t very cohesive across all the subjects but everyone has loved their book lists. I’ve also heard a lot of good things about BYL too. I don’t want to overwhelm my son with too much but I also find these early years to be so fun and I just want to do everything

Hey, I did a quick search and blossom and root 1st grade language arts is mostly picture books correct?

That's correct! For the first 19 weeks of the program, it's all picture books. Starting in Week 20 through Week 36, it switches to short stories, but they are not too long, and have illustrations included. These are all folktales or legends, which I know doesn't always click with all kiddos. My girls loved the stores from all the short story books, except for "Mangoes, Mischief and Tales of Friendships." I'm not sure if they were just burned out on folktales, or burned out because it was the end of the year, but we ended up stopping that book half way through and just read books of interest to them! Beyond that last book of short stories, my girls loved all the literature selections!
