I want the Gregory Focal so bad but I can't find it available online anywhere in Canada. Justin, I've been wondering why you don't review MEC products seeing as you're in Canada? I know it's not helpful to American viewers, but would love to see it as someone in Canada. I feel like the price on the MEC Talon -18 down sleeping bag is unmatched, I got one 40% off so $360 CAD for an 800 fill down sleeping bag is amazing! Comparables from other companies are in the $700-$1000 range. MEC deluxe pillow is great too. And I'd love to see you review the MEC Ohm, Volt and Spark tents.

@@jjlansing11 MEC does deliver to the US! There are a few items I think are really good and I chat about them on the channel a lot (my Mica pants and the Expedition Booties). Some of the other items are decent but not really standout in any way.

@@jjlansing11 MEC doesn't have a great name any longer in the enthusiast's camp... particularly after being sold to an investment firm during COVID. That being said, I'd actually like to see how their stuff compared to REI. Now that decathlon is in Vancouver though, I wonder how well MEC will do.

I don't understand the appeal of inner-first tents. They seem to be the norm in the US but these things are such an almighty pain in the butt to pitch or take down in heavy rain. With outer first, it's so convenient: get the outer up, put your rucksack inside and go in and unfold the inner in the dry. Same to break camp: take down the inner and roll it up and pack everything inside in the dry, and then just quickly take down the wet outer and poles at the end.

Thank you, Justin for your extensive best gear awards review for 2023! I didn't know about the Exped MegaPillow and will have to check it out! The NEMO Dragonfly 2P is an awesome tent! My husband and I have been wondering about getting trail runners but there are SO many choices! You made it easy with the Hoka Speedgoat 5 shoes which we have been considering! I also like the idea of the Russbe bags to put our food in! You get the best award for this indepth comparison!

I already had the Flextail Tiny X and recently bought the X2 for the inline coupling, which I think is a more robust design and mates more positively with adaptors than the little lateral nozzle on earlier models. I originally thought the built-in light wouldn't be of use with my existing lamp gear, but it's so handy the pump also became my main camp lantern.

I’d disagree with all your choices. You need to define “best”. The Helinox chair is the best but the one you choose is a cheap knockoff alternative. So much of what you choose is just your opinion. There’s a world of better options available.

I will say, although the half dome 3+ is a really great tent, the hubba hubba 3 is just as big, and definitely way lighter. Now it’s also almost $300 more and that’s not lost on me. So not necessarily comparable as far as price goes, but the weight is considerably better.

Not sure there is a best channel, they all hock different stuff with their paid affiliate links. You think it's a coincidence that so many of his products that won best awards here are all REI? I think if you want the truly best options, you have to pick pieces from each of them based on your needs, not just blindly follow one. For example, I'd take Zenbivy quilt all day over the ones here. I think both his pillow options suck and prefer REI's compressible pillow. Another example, he shows a $1,000 watch and then he gets to the chair and chooses an REI chair while mentioning budget restraints that's not as good as the Helinox Zero at $80 more. Can't say I find this guy all that genuine.

REI Flash packs are Great! You seem to be the only RU-vidr who appreciates them I have (non-adjustable torso) 55L and 45L; both discontinued. Just bought an REI Magma 30F quilt. Looks really nice. I like the semi-rectangular shape. It won't tangled up onmy feet if I turn over. My first true quilt. Haven't used it on trail. I also have the Trekology pillow. I supplement it with a small DIY down/feather pillow. Adds comfort and a surprising amount of warmth. Short videoon my channel, Tom Loves DIY. Garmin watches are SO expensive. I can't justify the $. Have an Amazfit GTS 2 wich is VG for basic smart/sports watch. At least 4 days battery life. Great channel. Keep themcoming.

I have to admit that down or even down-wool is really more comfortable but... the next morning they always tell me: I hope I can get it dry till the next evening because otherwise I gonna freeze. My answer then is always: I got my wet socks with me in my synthetic sleeping bag the night to get them dry (and it works). Even not worrying about humidity. two years ago you rated the katadyn as the best water filter. It filters faster, is light and cheaper than the platypus. What changed?
@JustinOutdoors
@JustinOutdoors 6 месяцев назад
I had one clog up on me within one week while on the GDT. The Platypus had just come out at that point. After more use of both, I like the versatility, speed, ease of use, and reliability (for me) of the quickdraw.

@JustinOutdoors

I tested a Coros (review on my Gear Priority channel). I didn't like the ecosystem or functionality of the Vertix but what was a deal break for me was the giant dial/button that would trigger activities or stop activities anytime i bent my wrist.

Garmin Instinct 2x is not good for a long activities. In 6 months two of them died during my ultra-long hikes. Luckily they were under warranty so first was replaced with another Garmin Instinct 2x and after another died I returned it and bought Fenix 7XPro and now I'm happy. I dont recommend Garmin Instinct 2x anymore.

@e2dub
@e2dub 8 дней назад
Official Flash weight limit is 30 lbs but he claims in a different video thread that he’s carried up to 50 lbs ok. Exos’ official limit is 35 lbs. I wonder which handles excess weight better the Flash or Exos, anyone have experience with both?

@parajared
@parajared 6 месяцев назад
They are heavier than the mentioned nightcore one which is why he probably didn't mention them but I use Anker because of quick charge. The Nitecore charges at 18 watts meaning if you are hiking for a couple weeks you are stuck doing longer in-town recharging for hours on end or charging over night. My personal Anker battery charges at 60 watts so I can hang out in a park or a restaurant or something for just an hour and then be back on the trail with a good 50-60 watthours of juice.

I wouldn't take any of this modern fad gear into the wild hiking. If it works for you great but I like stuff from 100 years ago, as stuff from 100 years ago still works now. Non of this thin lightweight kit will last hard use. Its leather wool canvas and steel for me from now on.

Why not 1000 years ago?

lightweight stuff does wear out and break down quicker. My built-to-last ARMY gear loadout was about 30-40lbs (no food/water) and my "fad gear" weighs about 14lbs. My ARMY "shelter half" (half of a tent) alone weighed about 10lbs and you had to find another soldier to complete the full tent lol.

I going to say it, and get shot down.... but these camping sites never aim at the beginner. $200 for a sleeping bag, and more for other products. Anyone with common sense at beginning level would go for cheaper to see if this is for them. But get put off buy these site. Why can't someone do a beginners pack. Thoughts am I wrong???
