This video on the 2023 Bordeaux en primeur is an absolute gem! The depth and extent of your analysis and insights truly brings this vintage to life, giving us all the essentials we need to know - including grape-growing problems and weather challenges - plus an excellent set of sound and exciting recommendations in order to make informed decisions in buying 2023 Bordeaux wines. So thrilled to see some favorite and beloved producers on your list including Malartic-Lagraviere, Las Cases, and Clos du Marquis. This is definitely a must-watch for all Bordeaux fans and wine enthusiasts, whether collecting or just buying the 2023 vintage now or in the years ahead. I’ll surely try to get my hands on some of the wines you mentioned here. Thank you, John, for yet another outstanding, useful and helpful wine video. You’re the absolute best! Cheers!

Excellent video John ! PC is an extremely good recomendation, my only problem is that it is a wine of very slow evolution and prime time could be 20 or 25 years into the future and thats a very long time to wait. Many of us do not wish to continue to wait for decades for our wines to evolve and be ready. Maybe 10 or 15 years, but not a quarter of a century !

Thank you! Yes, unfortunately I didn't have much information about that one at the time of publishing. Since that time, however, I tasted with Pichon Lalande's winemaker. He thinks that it has a lot of similarities to the legendary 1982. The price is definitely right as well.

Good stuff, John. Unfortunately, I will pass on the 2023 for a number of reasons: anno domini, having just passed my 69th birthday; I have lots of claret from this recent fantastic run of vintages; '23 is, as you say, uneven; and it is not, so far as I can tell, an early maturing vintage. I might, however, buy a bottle or two or three of the 2016 Cantemerle, which I can pick up for £32 per bottle, which seems a decent price for such a year. I will probably open a 2014 Beaumont tomorrow to go with the roast lamb. It is drinking beautifully right now. Thanks, again.

Great review as always! Prices for first growths are coming down! Did lafite and mouton impress you the most? What were your thoughts on Margaux and HB? Not as impressive? I’m definitely trying to get some FGs for the first time. Thank you!!!
@AttorneySomm
@AttorneySomm 11 дней назад
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I published this video before the HB and Margaux were released so I wasn't sure what the pricing would be and did not want to include all four First Growths that sell en-primeur in this video, so I went with Lafite and Mouton. HB is excellent too - potential 100 point scores from Decanter, Jane Anson and The Wine Independent for HB. And I see it for $424, which is pretty fair. Between the four, I would rank the Margaux 4th even though it is also stellar. That one sells for about $500.
@justinlow1990
@justinlow1990 11 дней назад
@@AttorneySomm ahhh that makes sense. I might go with lafite just cos it is the most well known and possibly either mouton or HB just for a second one as the prices tend to be almost the same. Margaux is about 70-80 more but it could also be WOTV for left bank🤔
@ronmcmartin4513
@ronmcmartin4513 Месяц назад
From the critics that I follow(my preferences line up closely with their palate), Margaux, Pauillac & St Emilion(expensive Pomerols/1st & 2nd Growths) were the best areas. If I were starting a collection, 2023(and 2021, which received nice upgraded scores recently) is Really cheap, compared to back vintages of 2009-2022. As you said, "Strict Selection is Required", but this seems to be a "classic" Bordeaux vintage. They are not the blockbusters of the great vintages between 2009-2022. Similar to XLNT Sonoma Cabs vs Napa. If you're a Cal Cab drinker, St Emilion is the closest. Laroque, Sansonnet & Tour Saint Christophe should be less than $40. Pauillac is the most Classic smell & flavor. Batailley was 40% cheaper than the price of 2022($60+), at $35. The tastes of the different regions(appellations) are similar to Stags Leap vs St Helena vs Howell Mtn. Bordeaux is just more Cerebral. I'd wouldn't go nuts. 3-6 bottles of a couple of wines in each different appellation in your price range, and 3 bottles of 2021s, would suffice, starting in 7-10 years, & CORRECT storage!
@AttorneySomm
@AttorneySomm Месяц назад
Thank you for weighing in! Excellent thoughts. I definitely enjoy a number of the names you mention as well and have featured them in other videos. Definitely agree re pricing too. And I do enjoy more restrained vintages with higher acidity too.
