Watches and Wonders 2023 has just started and I should be talking about the new Rolex and Tudor releases - thats certainly where the clicks are. But I cant, I find this new Breitlings just too interesting, so here we are. My hot take on the new 2023 Breitling Top Time and Premier Chronographs.
For your awareness some things about me and the channel.
I'm an engineer who's into human behavior, loves the ideas behind art and sees watches as a mix of science, craft, art, business, history, technology, philosophy, and psychology. As a result, my videos cover all that ground. (Oh, and I overthink everything).
In my opinion a $15 Casio or a $50 G-Shock are probably the only real tool watches and pretty much everything else is jewelry. So as we are talking about jewelry I think style is substance and I tend to believe history, brand, style, design, execution, and aesthetics are more important than specs. A dull design with a good movement is a dull watch, and an exciting design with an average movement is an exciting watch.
To be clear, I hate the expression "it's just a watch". If you got this far, watches matter to you and represent a bridge between us - dismissing them as unimportant seems wrong and disrespectful. That doesn't mean we can't and don't have fun, it just means we should not be totally mindless of others.
I'm a watch collector and curator - I like my collections to have a theme. My collection has several themes:
1. Vintage Alpina watches
2. Travel watches (GMT. UTC, world timers, home times, dual times)
3. Seiko Prospex dive watches
4. Breitling chronographs
5. Stuff I just really like.

I like these new models more than some of their other efforts. But I still I prefer the older, brash and brazen 00's - 10's models. Currently trying to find a good B1 super quartz example.

How many collab versions they have with the Mustang 🐎 ? I got the open case one. I saw a similar one with a closed case back which has a blue indices on the tachymeter.

These could convince me to entertain a modern Breitling. The dial colors and design are very well done. The price point is higher than I like so I would need to see if there will be some sort of discount in the future.

I just got the latest Mustang 🐎. I didn’t have any plan to buy it. I was just passing by the boutique and I had a crush 😻 on it, even after trying my beloved Datora, that I am sure it’s beautiful 😻 , but too thick for a dress watch.

I really liked the blue dial Premier Duograph but found it to be head heavy and quite a thick watch on wrist. The new two register Premier Chronograph with date in blue - basically the same look - is a much more wearable watch with its thinner case. But what puts me off with Breitling is the endless model churn. No sooner than you’ve bought something it’s replaced. Then replaced again. All this limited edition business is just to stimulate the market. Add that the B01 isn’t antimagnetic as yet and it’s falling short. Good looking watches anyway with the youthful fresh top time. Can’t fault the AD experience. Cool friendly shops in London at least. Breitling on the right trajectory compared with the frankly ridiculous wrist cannons of ten years ago.

Well summed up Pete. Tried these on, like the green dial on bracelet, glossy croc leather looks somehow cheap and the lighter brown doesn't suit the green dial. My only concern 13k AUD - do you think they represent value?

How to assess value? A grand cheaper than a speedy - not METAS but much thinner and greater water resistance - not as serious but more fun. 4 grand cheaper than a Zenith Pilot chrono. Seems in the ballpark to me.

Like your hot take, Pete. Thin is in! Great vid Good to take things with a grain of salt from the keyboard warriors. Otherwise, the designs would be suitable for a much smaller group of people. Regards, Chris
