Chevy is bringing out a brand new midsize pickup this year in the 2023 Colorado and we had a chance to sample many of its flavours. We took a Trail Boss and Z71 off-road while also going for a quick run in the Work Truck to see what the base model is like.
The all-new 2023 Chevy Colorado offers only one engine with three different outputs, while the new Trail Boss model brings an affordable off-roader to the table.
Get all our thoughts on the new 2023 Chevrolet Colorado in the video!

These are some of the best styled trucks GM has had in years. Yes, the front end is sort of complicated/busy, but this is now true with a lot of trucks. This one definitely looks aggressive, but it ties and binds into the overall design very well. If I hadn't already gotten a build date for a Maverick I've had on order, I'd have considered ordering one of these.

I would still like to have a light switch. Many times in fog or snow that the lights don’t come on automatically because the sensor thinks it’s light but you want to manually turn on the lights. Don’t want to be fiddling around with a menu to turn them on.

Been waiting for this review for months! Great job guys!! And you get to enjoy the Sunny South ! Sounds like overall, you weren't in love with the engines and driving experience, but appreciated the updates and the Features. I personally like the new styling . I also think the new interior looks better than the Nissan Frontier. But if I were to guess, I think the Frontiers engine and cabin sound deadening are better than the new GM twins. I guess we'll have to see what happens when you put a trailer on the back, throw it through the mud and the hydroline and see how it stacks up. Now we have to wait for the new Ranger and Tacoma. Can't wait for your next in-depth reviews

Thanks for the review! I really like the styling inside and out of this truck, I think it's best looking of the bunch of midsizers including the ones to come the Tacoma (patent drawings) and Ranger. I have a Colorado on order Z71. Ordered over the Trail Boss to get the heated seats, sun roof and up level interior. I thought that the Z71 had a lift kit above the work truck? What would the increased torque from the standard Z71 to the HO give me? My truck probably will never go off road. Thought your review was very interesting and gave a lot of pros and cons. I did have a 2017 ZR2 which I traded for 2020 Ram Larimie crew cab. Ram turned out to be great vehicle on the road but just too big. Looking forward to the Z71.

I like the overall look of the truck. The front end is a little too busy. I wish there was an option for LED headlights on the Trail Boss. Also, I wish there was a different color for the interior other than black. In the previous version you could get a gray and black interior.

Thank you for this awesome review! Helped me really lock down the trim I want to get. LOVED the 2023 Z71 Colorado when I test drove it. Definitely ordering myself one soon. For me the lift was tempting but at the end of the day its going to be my daily driver in hot ass Texas and a road tripper. So for my partner and I, having off road capability for parks and skiing etc is great, but swapping that 2in loft for the extra comfort and features is worth it to us. I want an air conditioned butt when I get off work 12hr at the plant and I want to just relax and not be in a stifling hot truck after working on boilers.

Only reason I've ever touched the light knob was to turn the lights off then on to see if the lights were on. You're right about the exterior lines. So many lines. With the grill being so high, it makes the truck look tall and narrow with a high centre of gravity

The only problem I have with the light control is I never drive anywhere without at least having the running lights on. Not the daytime running lights, because I like having lights on the back of the vehicle on too. It would only mean I'd have to turn the lights fully on when I drive in the dark so it's not that bad.

It is laggy, though, but once it spools it just goes hard. I'm looking for a midsize with a bit more refinement as I'm not going off road as much as I planned. @tomm1109 Год назад
Their was a leaked memo that showed the rating as 19/24 for the + and HO and 19/25 for the base engine. Personally, I don't want a full size even if the price is the same. Where I park at my house it is easier to park a mid-size. In general it is just easier to live with. If I have to make two trips to home depot once or twice to carry more stuff it is not a big deal.
@jhagen4850
@jhagen4850 Год назад
If you look at 9:59 you'll see mileage on dash is 17.4MPG. Even if you give back a few MPG for it being driven hard and possibly idling a long time, that's not a great number. In another video with the Z71 I saw 14.5MPG with 250 miles on the trip odometer. So you're probably looking at terrible gas mileage with the work truck and Ford Raptor fuel economy with the high output 4 cylinder. But hey, it has good emissions so who cares how much fuel you burn?

I saw Stephen’s non speaking cameo on Andre’s TFL Truck 🛻 comparison video earlier. I have wanted a mid size truck 🛻 for a very long time and was excited about the new Colorado and Canyon and I still am. I am just bummed that the pricing starts for the Z71 where the optioned out previous generation Z71 topped out at. Making an even more ridiculously expensive truck. More tech upgrades I know. I love the look, the interior and tech features in the Z71, but the price tag 🏷️ and off road capability for a guy with a limited budget who loves to hunt and fish 🎣, kayak and camp 🏕️ has me leaning toward the Trail Boss. I built one for around 42-43k USD vs 48k USD for the Z71. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and driving experiences. So glad to see these finally come out. 😎

Hey now I LIKE the outdated interior in my ‘22 ZR2 that I got large laser on your recommendation after being on a bronco badlands waitlist for a year. Hey a couple things to check in the new gen that are lacking in the 22: 1) the ‘22 headlights are dangerously bad, and the first upgrade usually recommended. How is night driving? 2) Being “Shrek shaped” the Colorado was the midsize I fit in best. Does the Colorado maintain it’s Shrek friendly nature? 3) The interior screen dimming is poor on the ‘22 so I am often adjusting it to see better at night. 4) the sports bar is dumb and the lights just illuminate the cab roof 5) the last gen ZR2 can be lifted to clear 35”s but it involves lots of cutting, regearing, and big bags of money. What’s it going to take on the 23? 6) are the shock supports still under the axels to drag on stuff? 7) have a shortie crawl in the lifted units, the grab bars are way up high and awkward in the 22 Thanks TK!

You can upgrade your Turbo Plus engine to the High Output (with just a tune) as an option, even if your truck is delivered as a Turbo Plus, because they have the same internals. And you can "check the block" on an order for a WT for the High Output, but for the base engine some of the internals are different and Chevy won't flash that ECU and give it a warranty. Although I'm more than sure the aftermarket already has figured out a way get a LOT out of it. They're built crazy strong
@ALMX5DP

The Frontier and Tacoma still offer them and that gives me a much easier time loading kayaks right into the bed without having to use an overhead rack. I see plenty of Tacomas especially driving around with the 6’ bed so there must be a decent market for it.

I really dig the styling of the WT. Here’s hoping dealership markup’s won’t exist.

Speaking of cost savings. The sticker isn't needed foe towing. They don't list VIN specific towing because you get 1 of 3 ratings regardless of options. 3500, 6000, 7700.

Fun fact: GM parts is offering the H/O specs through a OBD program update for the mid 310hp engines.

The people that don't use the auto function on their headlights, or at least don't realize they don't have auto, are the ones you see driving at night without their headlights on....so fully automating the headlights is a good call.

What does the 4 cyl. do different for the money? Besides paying more and getting less. Or are we really getting more in the mid size

4 cylinder engines belong in economy cars not trucks that will top out at $70k CDN

Nice review again guys , hahaha hello mom , that was nice to introduce your mom , it is kind of weird not having the knob for the lights , but as you said , most cars today , it set it and forget it , i guess they still have the high beams control on the turn signal stock , flash to pass or push to put on the high beams , I have the 21 V6 , i like the sound from the engine , even though its a 6 , how does the 2.7 sound from inside the cab , the 6 still gives you a sort of truck feel

Would really like to see you guys have a discussion on these small and mid size trucks about reliability. Throw the entry level trucks in as well as the top models of the Maverick, Ranger, Colorado, Santa Cruz, and Tacoma and see where the dust settles.

You Make zero sense.. Guessing you are a Millennial due to the Fear in Voice.. " How do you talk about a 'Reliability" Before its even being sold. again, rather stupid.

Yep new engine with a turbo and cylinder deactivation and a 8 speed transmission that has been historically problematic.
@randycupp5925
@randycupp5925 Год назад
It's not a new engine and transmission. It has been in the Silverado 1500 since 2019. The transmission had issues and was updated a few years ago.

Haven't heard the reason why they lengthened the wheelbase. I suspect it has something to do with crash tests. The last model was a little weak on offset crashes, so since they needed to beef up the frame anyway and moving the wheel forward helps prevent cab intrusion they made the change. They advertise it as better approach angle, but like you said it gives worse break-over and also you didn't mention, but the turning circle is probably bigger.
@jeremyjohnson6438
@jeremyjohnson6438 Год назад
They probably had a lot of engineering based reasons but a longer wheelbase has better stability on road and towing, can smooth out the ride, and it increases the cabin space. Awesome truck. Good on GM/Chevy

It would help high speed stability with the quicker steering ratio. Might increase leg room also.

i could see getting rid of auto light knob in some cars and suv's. but in a work truck a lot of people may have lights on at jobsites when trucks off or leave parking lights on with out headlights when performing roadside work / unloading to save on battery. gimme me knob

I really like this truck. I probably prefer the ZR71. So afterwards, I then would changeout tires and rims to a more aggressive AT rugged setup, including a 2” lift.

Is this truck big enough for 4 guys over 6’? Seems like it might be a little tight and therefore why not just get a 1/2 ton?
