Today we are at the 2023 DAPNET (Draft Animal Power Network) Field Days!! This video is a part 1 because we wanted to show you a few tidbits about what happens at this great event! The DAPNET field days is a place for people interested in animal power to get together and learn more! There are courses on draft animal farming and logging. This year, Jim helped lead a course on logging with draft horses! We travelled to Shelburne Farms in Vermont for this event with our Belgain horse, Bill, and our Percheron horse, Ken.
DAPNET website- www.draftanimalpower.org/
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

I'm glad to see that there is interest in draft animals. I've been out here shouting in the wilderness that we need to not lose these skills for 45 years, and no one was listening. We had some folks come down from Maine to do an oxen demonstration at the horse park 12 or 13 years ago, and there were a handful of people there to watch.

My dad would have loved your channel but he passed away in October of 2000. He loved draft horses. He purchased a Percheron named Maude many years ago. My dad said that she could have plowed by herself if there had been a way to keep the plow straight. We all loved her, she was a good watch horse too. She was so gentle & calm. So I love watching your channel, it brings back sweet memories of my dad & Maude plowing, thank you.

I crossed Lake Champlain on the ferry in Aug of 99 on my way home from a stay in PEI, stayed overnight in Bangor Maine and made it home to Ontario by nightfall. Got kind of lost with only a paper map, in Saranac somehow ended up at the ferry unplanned, wild trip all alone in a 92 Buick Roadmaster. My last real vacation in a way.

I have been waiting for this weekend since you first started to talk about it. I was so excited when I saw you waiting for the ferry in Plattsburgh. I can see the horses kind of enjoyed their sail across Lake Champlain. That trip is so relaxing. I have been to Shelburne a couple of times. It is a big place with beautiful fields for the animals. If I was young this demonstration weekend would be the place to go. Lots to learn with show and tell. Looks like a lot of fun with good people and talented animals.

Good to see the younger generation taking up the best land and animal care! We need to also be aware of the moves to put farming out of business as in British Columbia Canada ,where governmenf officials stop water use for crops, even from private wells. See documentary "Stolen Water". Also increasing fertilizer costs putting farmers out of business as in Holland .Canada has started on this route too. The farmers in Holland pushed back from farm land confiscation but many lost their family farms . We need our farms and protect the food chain they provide. Governments unfortunately think they can provide by excessive interference.

I know nothing about "working" cows but that was a beautiful beige cow she was rigging up to do whatever she wants to be done. The thing is that was a very heavy load to be draped around their necks to begin with. So, they start off with a mark against them. I suppose they are prepared to do it. I have seen cows or oxen in videos that do carry a heavy load but it just seems there could be a better way. I would like to know if there are weigh to load ratios that would tell you if a cow or even a horse has reached it maximum pull weight?
