Hello folks, as a number of you have mentioned the Hilux Rogue does indeed have a disc rear end, apologies for the oversight/confusion. However, the Hilux's braking performance can't match the others, even with the same hardware!
It's possible for toyota to make the engine sound less when hard on the gas pedal but when the engine has more noise silencers a driver feelsbso comfortable forgetting the much strain they are giving the engine and that is why ford ranger and amarok engines don't stay longer than the hilux
@@aaronbutao9543 cost it cost money to sound deaden a car, toyota is the worst at putting any sound deadening technology in any of its vehicles, profit over anything else is the reason. @@paulmcintosh5589 say whatever u say dude, we still choose the Hilux....that's my choice, ur Ford and Amarok....they mean nothing, they're built for little princess.... HILUX FOR THE MEN
They keep doing this nonsense of comparing new gen car to old gen competitors, how about they wait the others to catch up and then compare are new gens?🤷🏻♂️
@@carsales stop rewarding poor vehicle standards by toyota they do nothing to set the benchmark in any area, firstly safety, than power, capacity, technology.
I ended up buying a sr5 hilux over everything else. Just get in and drive nothing complicated about it and no silly annoying features. Great Ute for the business.
It’s funny the most risky part of any business is driving, yet safety seems not to be raised in this area. Toyota would only manage 3 stars in a 2020 crash test. Toyota rushed to get the 19 test done till 24 the results are worse in that test than Dmax Mazda ranger and amarok did in the strict 2020 test.
@paulmcintosh5589 Safety starts with the driver. Everything else is a bonus. I'm not sure which Hilux you're referring to, but my SR5 has a bucket load of safety built into it, considering it's fundamentally a 4WD Ute. Again, it's a Ute, not a cotton wool box. P.S. I'm an ex Audi VW Porsche Technician. If I won one, I'd sell it straight away.
Totally agree Josh - I actually own a 2010 Auto diesel Hilux with very little tech to go wrong ‘out there’ because it has a conventional handbrake, analogue dials and old style aircon - the elephant in the room is that the new Ford Ranger is already giving owners grief with failing digital instrument panel and stopping dead at 80km and we know that bogun Ford have happily joined Land Rover, Mercedes and Jeep at the bottom for poor reliability - wouldn’t touch a VW with a barge pole - Toyota Hilux every time.
We have the Wildtrak, coming from a Discovery. We really love this Ute, it is quiet, smooth, great to drive, comfortable, economical and it tows great. It is a much better vehicle than I was expecting. I was worried when we jumped the gun before waiting for the Amarok, but knowing it has a more sporty ride, I read that as more firm I’m relieved as the last think we would want is harder harsher ride.
@@anthonyfarnan5935 incorrect, the current ranger has many different changes to its chassis, wheel base is longer shocks different rear structure is different 6400 gcm the cab is built with new stronger materials.
A mate of mine has a new hilux with less that 10,000km on it Arrived last September, one of the first with the safety upgrades to match Ford features. here is no comparison when it comes to fuel usage. The Hulix kills the ford/Amarok platforms. He has never been above 11.5 lt per 100km even with real offroad driving. the 3lt ford motor is up to 30lt per 100. Towing comparison I cannot comment on at the moment but will be able too in the next 6 mths
@@darrensmith4661you haven't got A clue mate my v6 amarock is always between 7 and 9 litres per hundred unless l an towing the Toyota has less power and still uses more fuel 😂
Found the review quite contradictory in its conclusions / comments, having driven all three, the Rok is without question the better executed when it comes to refinement, suspension and handling - Ranger is a brilliant all rounder, just a step behind in terms of seat comfort and perceived quality - really feel sorry for the Hilux, if I wanted a truck that assured me of never breaking, she’s the one, but just too hard to live with if you want as a car as well as a work horse.
Matt Campbell from therightcar? Says about the Hilux...Sorry to break it to you, but it's not the best 4x4 pick-up. It's not even close. While it might be improved over the standard HiLux, a lot of the old niggles and annoyances remain. It rides better, yes, and it looks tougher than ever. But this grade is more expensive, has a lower payload, and doesn't have a power bump over the standard models. It also has a slightly more impressive cabin, but it's SO FAR BEHIND THE TIMES in terms of interior design, technology and finishes, that it feels like it is stuck in the late twenty-teens. It's also got shorter service intervals than most utes, and still rides horribly, in comparison. So why would you choose it over any other ute? You tell me. I'd love to hear anything other than "because it's a Toyota", "great off road", "best resale value", or "unbreakable".
Toyota will last longer, will be more reliable and retain more resale value.... because it is simpler. I don't own a truck but just love seeing reviews.
not exactly the case, just because its underpowered and the interior hasnt been changed since 2017 dosent mean its better it means its old, it wont retain more resale value, at the moment the rangers are holding value as well if not better than the hilux
WIth the hilux you are paying for the reliabiltiy of it, such as the manual seats compared to the ranger, in my opinion the hilux is still a reliable work horse UTE, but with the other two they feel like a car/Van
Seems to me that the Ford and Amarok are going the same way as Landrover.. all cuddly and soft and dare I say it stay close to a dealer with all the extra frilly stuff… I like my analogue gauges… road feedback and agricultural grit to my trucks.. keeping the touch screen fad to a minimum, with the marketing drive modes.. still fancy a Hilux.
Dusted air box, shit disc rotors, terrible suspension set up from factory, poor seat position shoulder it’s Bpillar hit your head on the roof getting in and out terrible GCM, poor safety standards compared to these.
@@jamesdol certainly debatable given that Isuzu and triton are more reliable, triton has had the longest running warranty for 20 years yet no accc issues no court cases so you debate is mute.
I feel like this was sponsored by Ford. The Wildtrack equivalent to the Amarok is the Aventura When comparing double cabs, please do include some off road (does not have to the most difficult ones}
Any time these reviews say something bad about old vehicles like the Hilux, all I see are less things to fix and go wrong 20 years down the line. Hydraulic steering = able to steer when the vehicle isn't turned on. Less tech = more reliable Less tech = lower weight Analog instrument = timeless and easier to replace
GOOD HONEST REVIEW. NO BS. I BOUGHT A SSANGYONG MUSSO ELX XLV. WITH THE 2023 REXTON SPORT MOTOR, & SOME OF THE REXTON DASH STUFF. SPORT AUTO ASIN G/BOX. Fellow musso driver, couldn't be more happy with the thing.. just recently paid 37K for a '22 ultimate luxury with 6xxx on the clock, can't match that value
I wouldn't buy a 5 year old modern diesel including Toyota, unless I knew how every k was driven. My neighbours wife drove their Colorado 800 metres up the hill every day of the week to work. They traded it in with 48k kms on it. Poor bugger who bought it.
The only issue I have is that this comparison doesn't really factor in the reliability and durability of the cars over the longer term. It is relatively easy to build a car that drives nicely and has fancy gizmos but far harder to build one that will last 20 years and still keep going. The Ford and VW's are nice trucks but surely a much greater emphasis, if making any recommendations, should include long term ownership and reliability. Also to criticize a car for having fluid power steering is mind boggling. Off road in particular being able to feel different undulations is vital. I rarely post on RU-vid any criticisms but I feel this comparison misses the mark for potential owners of this type of car
There are not many things you can buy these days that will last you 20-odd years to be honest and I don't know many people who still drive a 20-year-old vehicle from new. Unfortunately these days nearly all new vehicles have a heap of tech to keep them going under the bonnet. But I think you are referring to the screens and buttons or lack thereof? I also think that these manufacturers have been around for a bit longer than any of us, to be honest. Surely they would have some past experience they can build on when it comes to manufacturing a vehicle regardless if it's Toyota, Ford or VW. Just my thoughts anyway. Either way, I think all of these reviews are biased to some degree. Just read the comments on here and you will see different opinions and views on just about everything. The people doing these reviews are no different off camera IMO.
you cant review it based on previous models as things change and add different stresses to different parts, if they did what you are implying the hilux would win because both the ford and vw are a completely new veichle and what your implying would mean the fact that the hilux is a dinosaur compared to the other utes would be overlooked which shouldnt be the case, the hilux is very much behind and needs to catch up..
@@calebvanderbijl6738 not really the point I was making. There is nothing wrong with highlighting the track record of reliability and durability of the maker in question. It is one of the major factors is buying any car or truck. Obviously you can never be sure 100% but it nearly always pans out. It’s easy for a manufacturer to throw lots of toys at a product to lure people to buy but in nearly every case when you go back years after use and when these things are outside of manufacturer warranty the same goodie filled car or truck is exhibiting the same reliability issues and the dinosaur is still plodding on doing what it’s designed to do. It seems there are now two truck designs. One for posing on road and the other that needs to do the rough stuff too. It’s easy to make the aforementioned comfy and car like…
Hmmm doesn’t the Toyota Hilux Rogue have rear disc brakes? I thought that was the part of their upgrade? Another different point of view about the Ranger and the Amarok suspension again, seems like nobody seems to agree about which one does what on different roads. Very confusing.
Yes the reviews of the Ranger and the Amarock do sort of swap between reviewers but the constant is the Hilux id far more of a Lowlux in this segment very expensive for what you get.
Give me any time at Toyota Hilux living legend, the best ute I’m 64 year-old and this is my 4th Hilux you can’t beat it. I sold my last Hilux almost for the price that I bought. oh, what a feeling 👍👍👍
Have to disagree re interior, IMO Amarok is way better than Ranger. All these vehicles are premium dual cabs and have some of the best cup holders on the market, but if you plan on keeping outside of warranty I’m willing to bet you’ll need deep pockets!
I want to hear if these reviews are not sponsored , it's like Ausie car reviewers are in a race to promote the Ford Ranger. It's a nice bakkie but if you hear the praises you think it's out of this world, far above Toyota and nobody mentions reliability

Personally the massive infotainment screens and lack of physical controls for things such a climate control really turn me off from a purchasing a new ute atm
Everybody keeps saying the Toyota reliability, unbreakable.... that was in the past... not now.... I work in the mining industry and see all the hilux utes with electrical problems as soon as the roads get muddy...they are not what they used to be...
What should be considered is the base model Amarok has pretty much all the high teir features and ranger cut them out . Base models would be a great comparison for money value

I just compared a Wildtrak vs PanAmericana back to back, and the WT was hands-down the most compliant, comfortable ride. No point the VW having a sporty, responsive feel when you’re feeling every ripple in the road surface. Super noticeable on the same urban road, so would be unbearable on corrugations and poor road surfaces. Doing long km drives for work throughout regional WA, the choice for me was a no-brainer. Also has the added reassurance of a dealer in most regional centres. Interior layout on the WT is also a lot more practical.
What’s with the 80s style rear sway bar hanging down low on the rear diff, great toyota Engineering after thought. Most modern 4x4s have them up high over the top or auto disconnecting.
Good review. Love the new Amarok which is making the Ranger look a bit dated already. Might get one once they've worked out any bugs that come with a first release model. Also, regarding the comparison between the Hilux and the others, you are comparing newly released first gen models to a last gen model in the Hilux. The mid size truck segment in Australia is only starting to see the massive change from workhorse to everyday driver with comfort in mind. If the Tacoma in the USA is any indication of what to expect from the new Hilux, then Ford and VW and all others in this segment will be in for a rocky ride very soon and enjoy it while they can.
Only if they can fix the reliably issues with the turbo on the new Tacoma. Been reported the only way to replace it is to remove the body from the chassis! Not so great then😕
The current Hilux is the best it’s got to offer at the moment. Can’t wait around for years till Toyota come up with something that can compete with the present line up. The show must go on.
I couldn't agreed more, however for me they are all overpriced! I wish the Navigating system could be a bit higher, like 10/13 cm higher, I don't care about the size, because the way that has been designed, it's really hard to drive and keep look at it.
Vw clearly did a better job with ford , than Mercedes did with nissan 😮 im going to have to compare any differences in seat comfort to justify the price difference
@reginalnaidu3571 I actually own a next gen V6 wildtrak and it's been flawless, brings a smile to my face everytime I drive it. The Ranger is the most sold vehicle in Australia atm about 5,000 a month sure there will be some lemons every now and then but for the large majority it's happy motoring.
This is the issue with a lot of car reviews, I would suggest that the bias towards Ford has been purchased, hence the continued statements of being a market leader. There have been so many documented issues with the next generation Ranger starting at cost, delivery times, technology issues, tail, shaft issues Overheating, and in some cases, complete engine and brake shutdowns and yet car reviews continue to say it is a market leader. The cost alone on all of these vehicles is astronomical and completely out of the range of the average family of which the Ranger especially was allegedly meant to be designed for, designed with Australian families in mind was the quote. So long as we have certain consumers who, like a pack of rampant teenage fans keep buying these overpriced vehicles, which in some cases all come out of the same factory thinking that they are getting a bargain , dealerships will continue to push what is substandard products at the exorbitant prices completely robbing Australian consumers. When you think for 98,000 you can buy a ram which is like driving a couch compared to the Pokey Little Mid spec vehicles presented here for roughly the same price, it’s any wonder large American vehicles are becoming more appealing, while more budget conscious buying is going towards LDV and GWM
You're saying you don't want to bash the Hilux, but that's all you've been doing. As someone who has driven all of these vehicles and also an owner of the Hilux, you actually feel more bumps on the Amarok & Ranger. As a subscriber, I love your reviews, but You are being way too harsh on a Hilux. Ford probably paid you a lot of money for this review. Anyways. They are all good Utes to own.
Hey guys ,this discussion is interesting. At the ministry in my country, we have ford and hillux, though manual, current years. Hillux of today have similar problems like rangers, not like old school hillux which didn't have much electronics with simple drive trains. The only difference is that working on hillux is simple, cheaper and every where whereas fords are complicated to work on, needing very specialized technicians
Comparing an end-of-run Hilux with a couple of brand new competitors is a bit sus. Come back in 18 months and do the comparison. The new Hilux will trump the Ford and VW. Besides, the Hilux has better reliability, higher resale, and the best bang-for-bucks ! 👍
How bizarre that you didn't address the fact that the Hilux is still only a part-time 4x4. A wet highway with a load in the back you want all four wheels putting power to the ground. The Toyota's inferior payload, antiquated 4x4 system, engine that was barely salvaged after the massive DPFgate class action makes me wonder why people would even consider it. The Toyota should be $60k maximum against the two modern V6 opponennts that have AWD availability like every 2023 4x4 should have.
So what your telling us is the Ford and VW are the same car but in different clothing. Same architecture and motor, but different interior and exterior design.
I find these reviews interesting. A focus on Can a drink bottle fit, when clearly these vehicles are designed for soccer mums with their lattes. So yes the takeaway latte cup will fit. Why not talk about how Ford had issues but they’ve been addressed, if indeed they have. Why not question how GWM can make a deliver into country a vehicle for 20 grand less.
Hahaha well ya can't say hands down old mate, till ya take your amarok and ranger to the cape(Cape york) Toyota rain supreme up here reliable and doesn't full apart than all other 4wds 😂😂😂😂hands down the lad in this video should do a 4wd comparison of all three cars up here would be good 👆🏾👍🏾👌🏾
Work mate has owned a Toyota Hilux rogue for 2 years and as of today is getting rid of it. As he says, “ For 70k+ there’s too many things that aren’t refined and has had fixed.” Has pros and cons but the cons should be addressed for such an expensive vehicle. As for this review I heard, Hilux having 20% less power but same fuel economy. 😵💫
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m not exactly sure what we are testing here. I can appreciate a comparison between the Ranger and Amarok, but the Hilux isn’t in the same post code, let alone ball park. It’s junk compared to the other two utes.
@@surflix4306 There are many other old Hiluxes cruising around but reference is to the new vehicles. Even the current Hilux is not as reliable as the Hiluxes of old. But the current Ranger, would not last as long as the current Hilux
There is no denying the Ranger has everything covered: its looks great, has a modern interior, new techs etc, however its those intangible qualities that makes the Hilux the best ute to own, its reliable, durable, unrivaled dealer support. The Hilux is the choice for people who are serious about off-roading and over landing. I would not touch the Ranger when my life is depended on it.
To my toyota friends who are still living in the era when the hulix was king with its L series engines, you all need to wake up out of your deep sleep an just admit the facts that the ranger is a cut above from about 2007 - upwards. You Toyota people like to talk about reliability sure if you are talk about about the L series 2L,3L,5L anything after that is rubbish 1kd, 2kd, Kz not mention the c series 2c,3c,😂. My humble opinion hilux fans there is a new king you all can lie to yourself but the facts don't lie, you may sometime in the future become king again but for now your just a part of the royal family 😂.
Great review guys! Ford trumps all again, its the top execution of a ute! Toyota is a has been and singing the same reliable song for years, although ive seen many more broken Hiluxes and LandCruisers than Rangers, its all a myth and marketing from Toyota 🙌
The true test of any vehicle is not how they are on the day you buy them but what are they like 4 or 5 years later. I’ve been in a position to be able to buy new pickups every 3 years and am on my 4th Toyota. But I have friends that I go hunting with who have older vehicles and I can tell you an Old Ford is not a nice thing to drive around in compared to a Toyota. The build quality is far superior in my experience.
