When turning the computer on, hold the power button until the setting menu comes up. Open Settings. Menu Bar > Utilities > Terminal > "resetpassword"

Daniel, thank you for the video, I am trying to help my father in law with his MacBook, he picked up a virus and could not get into the system. Geek squad was able to wipe and reset the system. I am having an issue with trying to get into programs such as email and Facebook. I have internet (Tried google and able to navigate so I am on line) as for getting onto his email or FB accounts I am getting the (Passwords are locked), his prior passwords are not working... Suggestions?

I bought this imac second hand. I set it up but did not trx my data from my old mac. I have no question mark and no amount of failed attempts at password will lock me out or produce a pop up. :/ Resetting does not produce a question mark, nor powering off and on. Any ideas?

So, I got to the reset password page and put the apple id in the box but if I have forgotten the password it's not going to let go to the next step.

Hi thanks for the feedback but it seems that it doesn’t work for me. I have a Mac Book Pro and as I am locked out and forgot my password and trying it do as to what your version to unlock, it doesn’t show on my screen to put the Apple ID and password reset . So it would be great if I can view another video where it will work best for me. I even tried putting my ‘Hint Pwd’ and it still tells me it’s incorrect after it says it’s the right one. This is really frustrating..

Shut down your Mac. Power on and immediately hold command + r to get recovery screen. Then click the utilities menu and select terminal. Type resetpassword and you'll be prompted to set the new password. Reboot and you're good to go.
