When you hear the words full-size truck it is not unusual to think of the big three: Chevrolet/GMC, Ford, and RAM. However, the Toyota Tundra has been a fierce competitor for many years. In today’s Vehicle Visionary video, we pair the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 2023 Toyota Tundra to see which truck is best.

I ordered a GMC canyon 2023. Drove it home….23 miles. Towed to dealer following day, no power steering, dealer can’t even fix it. Returning it to GMC…I bought a tundra, best thing I ever did.

Toyota's and Honda's have always been our longest lasting and way less problematic vehicles hands down. Things will start to deteriorate more quickly on the Gm than the Tundra. If you're going to keep your truck for 10-20 years and get your money's worth, then its a no-brainer, get the Toyota.

Thank you for your video, but in my opinion all these fancy things like the GMC tailgate and double glove compartment at the end of the day Toyota is more reliable than GMC, Chevrolet, Dodge, and Ford. Who cares about a tailgate if the truck is not going to last? All these manufacturers need to start concentrating on reliability and not just looks.

GM is the new reliability. You get best of both worlds with GMs. Every truck has its pros and cons, no one is perfect. GM is a definite win for me.

Great video! For starters, they both look good and perform similarly for everyday driving. The point of separation for me is build quality and Toyota has it, hands down. The second reason to go with Toyota, it's safety record and technology. And really important third reason, Toyota resale is outstanding. You get more for your dollar up front and in the end!

Thank you for replaying my experience when I purchased the 2023 tundra 1794 trd. There are a few minor items, the mpg is disappointing is getting 12-13 mpg. I only have 900 miles so I’m hoping a little better mpg. Features I’m miss is the automatic 4x for all weather conditions. My tundra is 2x or 4x high and or low. The item i know many truck owners have to be missing is a limited slip deferential. I believe in real world driving the lsd helps you when you need traction at any speed or weather conditions. When towing its good to know both rear tires will help push your truck. Now I know a locking differential is there, but in the tundra only in 4x low. I agree with the interior quietness the tundra is louder with the tractor like exhaust sound you get when your throttle happy.

I think the American truck is better hands down. It has more torque than any option of the other one. It can tow more, better build quality, better gas mileage, more maneuverable, and it has better features. So I would definitely go with the American truck, the Tundra.

I’m a car salesman and I have sold both, I think that in the 1/2 ton trucks, Toyota would be no just more reliable, but also more gas efficient, nevertheless I believe that the GMC is a better looking truck and if you are going to tow a travel trailer a diesel truck will be much easier to fill in a gas station. On the next level trucks American truck still dominates the market specially diesel since Toyota doesn’t make diesel and doesn’t make this type of heave duty truck of so much power and probably never will.

Pricing would always help. To pay thousands more for gadgets no one actually needs but that are being mentioned as "better" in one or the other will also be a deciding factor. Well, I get a new Tundra every 2 - 3 years and i'm sold with quality and reliability on the top. Lastly, when "buying American" ,or "made in America" the Tundra is the one claiming top honors as well.

No contest. If you want it to last 20 years with a little trouble as possible, go Toyota. Enjoy the engine knock on the GMC starting about 40k miles and then lasting for ever, or until you want to spend thousands and thousands on getting lifter replaced. Not a fan of the new Tundra either. Turbos that need to be replaced are going to put most of these in the "cost more to fix truck is work department pretty fast." Pre v6 Tundra's are the best.

I just traded a 2017 Sierra SLT for a 2023 Tundra Platinum and I’m very happy. Reliability was the key. I took my Sierra to a GM dealer 5 times to fix the AC in the same year. Fed up. GM is building the Sierra in Mex now. Hmm. Tundra is in San Antonio. An American designed and built truck. I have 700 miles on the Tundra and plan on keeping it a long time. It’s quality and well engineered. Tow hooks would be good but I never used them on the Sierra. Not one time in 6 years. We also have a 2014 Avalon that has 115k and the AC has never been touched. I traded because of the AFM on the Sierra. I was just waiting to have to replace lifters or an engine in the Sierra. That fuel management system is terrible. Tundras don’t have that problem. The week I bought my truck the dealer sold 10 Tundras. 7 trades were GM trucks. 2 were Tundras. Enough said. People vote with their pocket book. If you go past three years with the Sierra you have to buy a subscription to start the truck with the app. Another gotcha from GM.

Well, if it helps you make a decision, I've had two GM engines blow up on me with less than 15k miles each in the past 18 months. '21 tahoe with 5.3l gas, and '22 sierra with 3.0l duramax. Both parts quality issues from their suppliers, lifters in the gas engine and crankshaft seal in the diesel. My recommendation is to run towards the toyota dealership and NEVER look back.

I have the conventional evaluation criteria, but the quality and characteristics of each of the trucks, then pricing IF significantly different (as in this case). But category that of review (that can't be done here because this Tundra is 1st year), RELIABILITY. So the decision maker for me are the conventional review aspects, but then critical to review for reliability, especially if you can obtain 5 year usage, including cost per mile (that includes repairs). When reliability data and actual User reviews are available, I certainly will remove from consideration, anything that is less than 90 percentile of the industry. That's because I cannot stand spending this much, then having inconvenient and harmful reliability - because it feels like such a betrayal.
