Hi Paul I watch your every videos and follow your ig cuz I think you are one of the best car reviewers in Australia and the reason for that is because you seem less bias and very informative. But this video had me questioning as to why this specific car had received more than 1 dedicated review video in such a short period of time? Is it an ad? And they weren't happy with the first one?
@@ishoman.alxndr Typically there are only a limited amount of vehicles to review and a brand like GWM will loan the same vehicle to a number of outlets. To ensure each outlet has time to edit their video they set a date when they are all allowed to be published. That's why you'll see lots of them go live at the same time.
hi. why don't you use slalom braking (braking with a detour of obstacles - cones) according to the prima, the tank tore off the rear wheels, but still showed a good result, when braking on a slalom it would be a failure
It's selling like hotcakes here in China for the past 3 years, people have tested in the 50°C desert, high altitude snow mountains, you can find nearly all kinds of terrain in China.
@@AdmissionGaming In China, the Tank300 premium version costs 330,000 yuan, or about 46,157 dollars, while the cheapest version costs 198,800 yuan, or about 27,694 dollars
Nice review Paul.We took our Tank300 to the Bribie Island on the beach last weekend. It was a smooth ride for someone like me who never drove 4wd before.😊
Love your car reviews Paul! I love that while you are honest about all the good and bad with these cars, you don't get stuck up on the shortcomings like some other popular reviewers. You helped me make a decision on my purchase recently so thank you and the team!
Never considered a GWM before I saw this. I will definitely check this out in person. Looks great for the price. About time there was a bargain competitor in the boxy offroader segment.
I was test drive dual cabs last year and took the canon for a drive straight after driving a hilux. I couldn’t believe the hilux was 12k more. It’s absurd what GMW give you for the money, definitely something to look into.
@@carrisasteveinnes1596 mate in my experience off road, my Cannon hasn't been in the poop, but has pulled out a lux and a ranger, these new models are far from junk
Thanks for the hugely comprehensive review. The Tank 300 seems really competent. The only potential concern could possibly be the lane assist system, but if that could be easily disabled I think the vehicle is an an absolute winner and great value for the money.
Drove one in Tibet and put 5000 extra kms on the clock with no issue. 2.0T engine worked surprisingly well on over 5000m altitude. Bought one straight away after returning to OZ. I'm a happy tanker now.
It's really amazing how quickly Chinese cars have gone from really crappy to genuinely class competitive, even before you factor in their much cheaper prices
not all chinese car are good. some manufacture as GWM is quite good for safety , offroad and pickup. but , you know ... some chinese brands are just....cheap.
@@kuyasingapore Did you watch the same video? I saw a car do a stoppie and specs that say 397kg payload. I wouldn't call that safe or useful for much more than mall crawling.
Paul missed a very interesting add on. If you look at what’s under the cargo area, there’s 4 table legs which you can assemble with the cargo cover to create a camping table.
Sensibly thinking, this Tank 300 ticks all the boxes. More so due to the fact it has really only just arrived and already, the reviews are in high praise. Just wait until the hybrid version comes with its thumping 258KW/615NMS of power and all for a measly $61k. SOLD!
I just got my Fossil Grey Tank 300 delivered to me 2 weeks ago. I have nothing but good things to say about the car. I'm still not able to understand why people are going crazy about the wheel leaving ground for a fraction of a second, its the case with any Jeep as well or any car with such a boxy design. Like mentioned in the video, this car is not meant for racing so this won't be an issue for normal driving anyways. My car drives so smooth and perfect through the city and many people already approached me asking my thoughts regarding the car as they are concerned about the payload. While I agree the payload is low, I'm not someone who used to tow caravans or trailers anyways, so it doesn't really bother me. I did my research not just based on YT videos, but also the internet and compared this car with other in the similar category in the market and this one really had a lot more to offer for the price. If I had to buy a Toyota Hilux or a Ford Raptor or a Land Cruiser in 2023 for nearly double the price, I would expect some advanced tech and looks/modern design especially in the interior. These Toyota cars look like their interiors were designed in 2015. I test drove all these cars and I honestly couldn't feel any difference in terms of driving capability and comfort but I loved what GWM have done with the Tank's interior (for the fraction of the price). You can call it a copy of Mercedes G-Wagon, but hell, which brand doesn't copy design/tech/or anything in today's market. I know Toyota have been well established in the Australian market since decades but that doesn't mean other manufacturers cars are not worthy enough. I would give this car a 9/10 today, 9 only because you guys who tow trailers and caravans know that this is not for you. Apart from that I would say, you gotta be in it to feel it. I'm least concerned about the resale value as I'll own this car for maybe 6-7 years as soon as the warranty expires, I'll sell it and buy something else. For me, how much money I spend out of my pocket TODAY is more important than what I may get back in 6-7 years back. Also market is changing, used vehicles value keeps going up and down. With the quality of cars GWM is throwing at the market today, I personally believe that their cars are going to substantially create a huge presence in the market in next 5-6 years and the value MAY increase. (Again this is just my personal opinion, I may be wrong as well, but who cares). I'm definitely happy with my Tank. Thanks GWM.
Thanks Paul, have waiting for this review for some time. I have bought one already, the daily driving is fantastic considering it’s a 4WD, very quiet cabin driven in the town. The flashing headlights is really bad. For the Active cruise, the steering struggles on the narrow road, but works very good on the highway. As expected, the traction control does not work well, but once diff locks engaged, it is very capable. I am happy with this car in this price tag. ❤
@@Jayeffhi have done 3000km so far, 12litres combined city/highway with OEM tyres, 13.5litres with 32inch AT tyres. No GVM upgrade on the market right now.
Excellent thorough review and quite an interesting mix of tried and true design with some electronic off road modes. I think it looks amazing. Wish I could trust its reliability and parts availability, but it's a brand new car yet. 400 litres of boot space is more than enough for me. I like it a lot.
One of the most popular off roader in China with hundreds of thousands models sold. After 2 years, all of the major issues have been solved. And it comes with 7 years warranty...
After waiting for what feels like 3 years for the new Prado, the Tank may get the nod (especially at half the price). By the way, I love the orange haha
Prado is severely overrated and Toyota knows it, hence the price. The cheapest-feeling and most outdated car in it's segment while being the most expensive
If you can't drive and pay attention then don't use the drive by itself feature it's dangerous relying on software is not a good idea for you or for other people just order a taxi mate
I have test driven both the Tank 300 and the Toyota Prado. I am surprised to say that the Tank came out on top, not by a little, but a lot. I have told my dealer that I will order in December for collection early January. I am having quite a few extras fitted. One being a custom winch , which was crazy money but I will use it.Oh, by the way. I am going for the ORANGE paint job. 🙂
Seeing that back end lift when he braked didn't bother you at all. You would put your family in a car where to back end lifts off the ground if you have to brake hard. No thanks
Ur on crack champ, can’t see how a car with plastic everything and fake Mercedes air vents will be better quality than a brand renowned for reliability and build quality but good luck
Helps when your company are owned by the state and that there's a massive drive for China to replace Japan as Asia's leading automotive nation. Oh and having cheaper labour and taxes defniately help too.
@@Cust0mBuilder GWM is privately owned... And all Toyota models are basically doubling in price every few years while being the exact same car. They simply know people will eat them up no matter how expensive and crap they get. That's the main reason behind the price difference, stop trying to defend their greed.
Had our Cannon Ute now 2 years, fantastic vehicle and not one problem. T300 and T500 are only going to make GWM a permanent top 10 player by next year 🤙
Acutally, the traction control is activated by selecting the mods, after selecting POTHOLE mod, the traction control will actually work without the diff being locked.
I have noticed a trend with reviewers where they apparently leave the driving mode in normal i.e. tarmac and then drive over moguls or deep water and roll their eyes when the wheels spin or park distance sensors beep. Just choose the appropriate drive mode and then see what happens. It's not like this is a series one Landrover. If the vehicle has drive modes that tailor the traction control then use them, otherwise it gives the impression that they are trying to find problems where they don't exist.
I have a GWM Haval H6 AWD 2022 and have been really impressed by the car. I expected the occasional quality issue and problem for such a well priced car, but none have eventuated. The GWM brand has been a real winner for me . I noticed the tech, screens and software appear the same as the Tank and that bloody lane keeping is infuriating. Must shuffle through the menus and be turned off at every start up otherwise it chirps away like a pokie jackpot and aggresively steers the car when you least expect it.
Have a look what ODB2 software options there are to change the settings permanently.. my cars all have annoying things I was able to disable using software on my phone and an odb2 dongle.
I think the boot space is just fine given the roof is so high that you could keep some of the stuff horizontally. Very impressed with this. I wish it came with a Diesel. Alas you cannot get everything.
I do find it weird considering Australia seems to love diesel power plants, considering a lot of American variants have petrol options that we don't get, this does seem like a car that would suit a diesel too
Apparently zero diesel available, but when the hybrid is available you won't wish for diesel as it delivers over 600nm & 270kw I think with even better fuel economy. It'll be phanominal and affordable.
I have a GWM Cannon X and I love it. I did notice the lane assist improved significantly after a software update as it was still running a bit of Chinese Road compatability and the update made a big difference. Only issue I have with the Cannon is they made a mess of the cup holder design. Fixed with an after market add-on.
Currently living in China and here there are a whole lot of after Market accessories for off-roading as well as Body kits, I would definitely buy this. lol coming from a Pajero and Prado fan...
Fantastic review. I only watched as my neighbour has just brought one😁. The orange colour looks great after the sun has gone down. Thanks for a brilliant review
Hi Paul, and from the outset, thankyou thankyou thankyou! I've been a tad critical of you not testing vehicles in correct modes off road in the past, but I do understand you can't obviously learn every feature on every vehicle in detail in the timeframe you have, I accept that. Pothole mode would have assisted cross axle traction problem you experienced. I've been perusing your site for a while now waiting this review as like you, I'm really impressed by this vehicle. The crawl feature, the turn feature both Toyota derived features implemented now in a vehicle half the cost, unsure about the petrol version but the hybrid version (as tested in Oz) has under vehicle view, a LR Defender feature. An oversite of a feature is, the rear cargo floor lifts out and that shiny aluminium package stored under it are fold out legs that clip into the base of the cargo floor turning the floor into a roadside picnic table. Also, rear door has moulded hooks for hanging items off, someone really thought out practical options for a off road vehicle here, congrats GWM. Whats it missing? Luggage/storage for distant outback touring & payload to suit also. GWM will have to lift their game though, as I've been to two dealers in NSW, neither could explain the "Expert Mode" button, one saying "the button that looks like a blue bottle", don't know. The other describe it as a haval H6, well basically it's the same vehicle, WHAT!!!! How do they expect to sell them if staff are so oblivious? Not able to test drive in NSW at either dealer, as there is an issue registering "The Tank" with NSW RMS. One dealer has my details, he'll notify me as soon as one is registered for road use, amazingly we don't live in a country as covid demonstrated, we live in seperate states, approved by everyone except NSW RMS. Ineous Grenadier has recently shaken up the 4WD industry, well now its GWM making headway, this is an awesome truck. Much talk of a 5 door Jimny coming, truly Suzuki, its too late, this tank will dominate the compact 4WD segment IMHO.
I wish the tests done on a bunch of SUVs and Pickup were in a previous episode...that any future SUV will test, Cylinder Test 10%, Wheelbase Endurance Test, Airlift Tire Torque Distribution Test, Easier Testing To climb a hill, try to climb a hill full of small stones... I hope there will be a test to climb a sandy hill... These tests will be great and be a reference for many people, and let's see how car companies improve their weaknesses in these trials
Hi Paul, Love your videos, just thinking if you make your own music, you can do a speaker test. It'll be great for people who love their sounds and curious how well they sound!
try adjusting the lane keep feature to center keeping, huge improvement without steering to the side. I can even drive hands free on my H6. They literally ue the same L2+ lane keeping system.
CarExpert : this Tank still looks better than the Mercedes G class which really should move from its origin Puch design. The TANK at least looks like a modern shaped box....just like the Jeep Rubicon or even slightly better.
You only think it looks better than a G-Wagen because you can't afford one of them, whereas the Tank is affordable :) Given the choice I'd take the G every time, preferably the army one.
@@einfelder8262 G Wagon is for old dudes with bellies and old football wifes. It's fugly....but it does have better and more logically powerful engine choices. This TANK looks sexy like a small tank....but it fails with me when it comes to the fact that it has a 2 litre Inline4 Turbo engine from a puny VW Golf. And you, if you like the G wagon, then youre probably yourself a poor and fugly middle aged dude that is only ranting here because you know that you missed out on your opportunities in life :).
For 50K and 7 years unlimited kms warranty this is amazing. Im just waiting to see how the resale value holds-up, im not expecting Land Cruiser level but unless they don’t half in price after a year I will be putting my order at the end of year.
Yeah, wow, good to have other competing cars in these segment's, great for us consumers anyway. Thank Paul. I would love to know your performance app you guys use
It's somewhat connected. Hey Paul, I bought a Fiesta ST in 2020. largely based on your very first vid, in this format/channel (amongst others). I have enjoyed ther heck out that car but now, Ironically, I'm trading it in for one these Tank 300's. Meanwhile, the war between impractical cars in my garage has been waged, and then comprehensively won . The Fiesta goes, The Tank300 comes, and the excellent, updated BRZ stays. Appreciate your many, many reviews Paul. 🙂
I don't think I've ever been even mildly excited about a GWM .. wow .. I'm conflicted. lol. For the money this thing craps all over the mux and pajero sport.. its got a modern interior and its 15,000 aud less!
it seemed ok, right up to the part where there's only a 397kg payload for petrol and 440kg for hybrid. take away down ball weight of 250kg (max tow 2500kg) and that only leaves payload of 2 persons.
What do you mean by Ball weight? How do you calculate the payload? For example me and my wife as passenger and driver are 130kg how much left for the payload for this vechicle?
This car is currently a hit in Russia in this category. Very very nice car. Great off-road capabilities, easy chip tuning to make this thing even faster. 1 downside compared to Tank 500 is suspension. Tank 500 is so much better on bad roads. Anyway, amazing car.
I've waited SO long for your Tank review 🙏. I saw one of the first versions at my local dealer a few months ago, the only thing that disappointed me was the boot space, it just seemed way too small for a car like this tbh, which is disappointing for those with prams etc
It's lack of payload limits it's appeal to Prado buyers, I'd say. But you're right: not a whole lot more than a Jimny for acres more space and comfort. Might even help bring Jimny prices back down to reality!
Sat in and looked over one today. I was surprised how good it was. I wouldn’t buy one yet, I think the problems will come and be fixed on the next gen. I’d rather buy a rexton for the same money who are proven and established. Good job though GWM, this for the money shows just how bad Ford, Toyota and a few others are at ripping off there customers. The prado and Everest are way way way overpriced.
actually, tank300 has tested in china for over 3 years. many people bring them to tibet(over 4000~5000m above sea level), desert, -40℃ condition for hardcore off-road. and they have reported each problem on the internet. i think what you get in australia should have fixed most problems.
i personally really like the Jeep-type look, very rugged and utilitarian, but with it not being an actual Jeep I feel a lot more confident knowing it will be in my possession a whole lot more than it will be in the shop for repairs. I've had nothing but good experiences with my GWM's and I fully intend to go test this when it lands in my area.
It seems like the GWM engineers took the best things from the G-Wagon, Land Rover, Land Cruiser (or probably the FJ Cruiser with that spare tire cover 😉), and the Jeep Rubicon then combined them into one vehicle, which I think is good.
Just curious, but did you notice any thudding in the front suspension when doing the corrugation section? I have an H6 3rd gen, and if you go over a traffic calming bump too fast (20km/h), it sounds like something is going to break in the front suspension, particularly on the left hand side wheel. My vehicle has done 15000km, and an independent check revealed that all four shocks on my SUV need replacing. The dealer then took the same model vehicle with only 2000km on the clock, and it's front shocks were also needing replacement as they failed the test. Would love some comments regarding this. Another issue I have is that there is no motion sensor in the vehicle, so anyone can break a window and steal whatever they want, and no warning will be given. PS. Glad to see they have added a light to the cubby hole.😇
Wow the rear end lifted at braking 😮 so unstable with that soft suspension. I’d like to see an emergency switch lane test.. this thing should flip. Great review Paul as always.
@@fablehaven3653 Does that involve a brake test? If I see a car do a stoppie when braking I don't need a rating to tell me all I need to know about its "safety". Having all the electronic nonsense to stop people texting from hitting the car infront is all well and good but when its obviously unstable that should be a big mark down. Imagine that round a bend or over a crest. Or towing.
As for reliability, service etc, here an interesting view. In Tibet, it used to be Toyota SUV’s world due to the condition of the place . Now days , it’s Tank 300 500 ‘s world if you check out car rental company . I think it means something .
A base model tank 300 cost 48k on road. A similar base model prado gx 5 seater costs 67k. Real difference is resale value, you have to factor in additional cost of 10 to 15k to tank 300 in resale value. If you add them in then the difference further reduces to 10k. Check LDV car prices which are 2 to 3 year old in car sales australia for a comparative study to draw parallels. If difference between toyota and gwm is 10k, id go with toyota any day. Nevertheless tank 300 looks amazing on the road, i also test drove it and felt good. Gwm is smart, they dont want to flood the market with tank 300s, they are now releasing 500 then 700. It will be released slowly, 3 to 5 years later we will start realising re sale issues.
Very interesting vehicle. Love the colour!! Shame I don't think we are offered it in the UK. Why didn't you use low range on the mogul test? Seems odd to only use high range.
@kennethprocak5176 well considering its a review for a far that's going to be sold in Australia, probably written by an Australian it's a perfectly valid statement.
LKA seems to be fixed. Had no issues so far. Test drive car a few months ago was horrible with bouncing within lane and I was prepared to live with it but I don't have that issue in my car and dealer said it has been fixed.
22:10 that would of been incredibly dangerous if you had been turning at all with those back wheels in the air. It looks a bit like a Ford Bronco Sport and has a lot of options for that price.
One important thing to mention that the payload is really low for an offroader. You throw a winch, some proper bumber, recovery gear, compressor, and two people, bam you are full. So unless someone offers a quality gvm upgrade, it's not much use for travelling/wandering around for more than a daytrip.
Love that it is called a "tank". In all my driving life, on a narrow road, 80% of the time I would be the one to pull over. I have a two door JL Wrangler. On a narrow road, I think the other driver does not see a jeep, they see a tank, and pull over. I Love My Jeep!
I’m sure all new cars will be great but how will they be after 100,000 miles? How is the availability of the parts? The price is very tempting but not sure I can afford such a gamble
@@phillipsaw I don’t blame you. It’s a gamble after all. Not all car companies will be successful. Either you take the risk and pay less than other well established companies or pay more and go with something that proven reliable over the years like Toyota.
Not sure if you have been reading the news lately but China is the biggest car market in the world, it's not the third world country some think it is, all car makers are trying to get in there. The volume of cars they get through there is mind spinning compared with Australia. GWM is one of the most successful brands in China whilst competing with Mercedes and Toyota. So it's well and truely tried and tested, much more so than if it was successful in Australia.
@@johnwayne8475 Sure it’s one of the biggest car markets. And you get a lot for the money you paid specially the interior But that doesn’t mean that the cars will be reliable and parts will be wildly available. I don’t live in Australia I live in Saudi Arabia and many Chinese car are available here and I also know that a lot of people are having issues with parts availability and they’re expensive because there are so few available otherwise the dealer would make u wait up to 3 months to get replacement body parts such as bumpers or side mirrors.
