American Honda offers free oil changes for the first two years or 24,000 miles on the 2023 Pilot. These oil change intervals appear to come around 8,000-9,500 miles per interval, depending on one’s driving habits. IMO this is too long of an interval if you plan to keep the vehicle a long time and avoid some long term maintenance issues. I am doing mid interval DIY oil changes around 4,500 miles and not resetting the oil change maintenance minder (will let Honda dealership reset during the free oil change at the full interval). I recommend using only genuine Honda oil filters (15400-PLM-A02) and 14mm crush washers (I have found Honda washers to provide slightly better “crush” characteristics than other aftermarket brands which are harder.). Once the free oil changes run out, my plan is to change the engine oil around every 5,000 miles - which is a more proactive approach than the factory recommendation.

I used a piece of cardboard under the oil filter to prevent a mess and it worked perfect

Good to hear. That was going to be my other approach after the tinfoil.

Picked up a 2024 Elite last Nov... hitting 6500 miles .. I do oil every 6K and balance and rotate the tires as well at same interval. That routine got the previous Pilot EX to 279K miles

Great video! Good idea with the aluminum foil. Your filter does have markings on it. Look just above the writing and you will see sets of little triangles evenly spaced around the filter.

Thx for that pointer. Will look for the markings on my next filter.

You can see 3 of the 4 sets of triangles in your video at 7:14, 7:38, and 8:04.

Got the elite too! Dealership here has been doing the complimentary oil change every 3k or 3 months. Thanks for giving me a sneak peak. By the way at 6k the valve cover was leaking aleady. Got it resealed under warranty.

Congrats and thx for sharing the info in the valve cover issue. Nice of the dealership to do the early complimentary oil changes.

I had to ask very nicely to get dealer to do it at 20% on the maint minder…

@@FourTheWheelsmy dealership refused to oil change at 20% oil life lol they said blah blah it will ruin the engine lmao for early oil change?? like how? i patiently waited until it showed up and it was 6,300miles

@@jonathanKogthat’s frustrating. Probably depends on different dealerships and how reasonable/flexible their management is.

Couldn't get your foil trick to work. Made a complete mess spinning the oil filter off. Ended up with most of that filter oil running down the shrouding on the undercarriage for the next few days. Even after buying the oil change tool for next time at about $60, my first self service tire rotation and full synthetic oil change with a premium Honda filter is still less than the cost of having the dealer do that service, and without the hassle of sitting in their waiting room for a couple of hours. The next day I did the rear differential fluid service for about $35 more dollars. Also - even though you get 2 years of some factory maintenance package (which may not include filter changes every time) designed to get our in the habit of going to your dealer for routine services, they aren't using full synthetic for that and my Honda dealer is a 40 minute ride from home so not convenient for routine maintenance. Bottom line - buy the $60 oil change tool to catch the filter draining when you spin it off. I doubt very many places other than the dealer will have this tool. And without it the oil filter service makes a mess.

Great comments and thx for sharing. The tin foil approach is a bit challenging but if you can get it tucked in well and then don’t budge it when spinning off the filter you’ll be ok. Still, the filter funnel tool is the easiest and best approach. Also, the Honda two year free maint really only covers two oil changes and two tire rotations. Doesn’t cover the rear dif fluid service at 15k miles, which they should IMO. DIY approach certainly saves a lot of money over the long run.

Appreciate the video! Going to try the old bent license plate trick for the filter drain catch, but I'm afraid it might not reach back as far as the filter housing. We'll see... Really don't want to spend the $50 on that tool (actually over $70 with shipping)! I also have a 23 Pilot Elite. And I intend to install a fumoto valve as well. I'm at about 5500 miles but just can't stomach doing the 1st oil change at 10000mi! Sorry one more thing, I have code A16 which also recommends the DIFF oil change, but I won't do that until the Maintenance Minder hits 0.

Thx! Interesting idea with an old plate. Gonna be close on the length. Have been considering a Fumoto valve, too. Hope that works well for you. The AWD “break in” rear dif oil change is at 15k miles then every 30k miles. Yeah, no way I’m going the full 9k+ miles between changes following only the maint minder. Will probably settle into an every 5k change interval, which will likely translate to about 50% or 60% on the maint minder.

@@FourTheWheels Tried it 2 nights ago, license plate worked decent! Needs some refinement to hold it in place, but did a decent job. Glad everyone but Honda is on the same page about oil change interval. Mine came out black, so glad I changed a little early. Fumoto valve (F106SX M14 - 1.5) will be clutch as well. Spilled so much oil on the floor because the drain plug is almost horizontal 😄. EDIT: In hindsight (for anyone who sees this), the fumoto valve sticks out a tiny bit from the plastic skid plate. I'd hesitate to put one on a car that is doing a lot of offroading, as it's very much the lowest point in the front of the car.

Glad to hear! The one nice thing about the tin foil is it’s easy to mold around the oil filter housing to ensure no oil goes where you don’t want it. And you’re right, it is tricky judging how far to the side the oil will flow out when you pop the drain bolt off. Good to have some extra cardboard around the bottom of the drain pan to catch any accidental spill over.

The marking on the oil filters are on the side indicated by triangular arrows.
@FourTheWheels
@FourTheWheels 4 месяца назад
Thx for the comment, correct. However, the filter goes on horizontal so it’s hard to get a good view of the triangle markings on the filter given the filter housing placement. Wish it also had markings on the end cap of the filter.

I have a 2025 pilot touring and noticed that they have two drain hoses for the air conditioning one for the front and one for the back the one for the back it’s not water coming out only the one for the front. Any suggestions

Only on rare occasions have I seen what appears to be a/c condensation drips at the back of my Pilot. Might only occur under certain conditions based on humidity and how hard a/c is running. On my previous Odyssey the rear dripped more frequently during a/c use.

how to reset?

Yeah, I should have captured that last part. It’s done through the infotainment system. Pretty easy. Owner’s manual will say and I recall there are one or two RU-vid videos on how to reset the maint minder.
