I prefer timeless to trendy because this year’s hot trend is next year’s “what the hell were they thinking.” Of course, a trendy paint color is not as costly for the owner or next owner to change than is a trendy tile floor or trendy brick wall. I do like the idea of eliminating the boring white ceiling.
@amypirtle6967
@amypirtle6967 Год назад
I will say though that a lot of these paint projects are pretty easy to rectify later down the line (unless you have ridiculously tall ceilings or something like that). I prefer white ceilings because mine are pretty low and the white opens up the space.

Ceilings are the worst most ball ache of a thing to paint. White is so it makes the room feel larger. If people wanna feel like the ceiling is closing in on them so be it 🤣

I live near Carrara - I am in the same province - and here we are used to marble since the beginning of times. We have marble benches in parks and train station, we have entire sidewalks made of marble, entire school floors as well. BUT I can’t get use to see marble in the entire vertical walls or even in the ceilings, because here you can find those only in churches or graveyard. When I look at a place with too much marble in a home I get a feeling of discomfort. 🤷🏻‍♀️

When we moved into our new home this year. Every room felt like a cave. It made me feel depressed. So I painted all the walls SW Snowbound and the trim SW Fundamental White and put color on the ceilings in the form of SW Sweet Salt Air (almost the color of sea glass). Everyone doubted me when I told them I was putting color on the ceilings (I was nervous too). But I knew I wanted a clear, crisp, blue above me, and it worked out. I'm so happy with my decision.

It's an old Southern tradition to paint the ceilings 'haint blue' mostly porch ceilings. It's a very pale blue, used to be believed as protection against ghosts! 😄 I like it just for the looks, anywhere in the home. Right now considering wallpaper on the dining room ceiling.

Checkerboard is timeless. In this country, alone, it goes back to the colonies. I’ve always incorporated bits of it in my decor and am glad to see a fresh collection of items.
@thedavidj1996
@thedavidj1996 Год назад
And checkerboard is easy to mold up your style too. You can do classic black and white but also neutrals or colors. It’s surprisingly flexible, like how subway tile is classic sideways, but modern when it’s vertical or colored or if the grout color contrasts with the tile color.

I'm old enough, now that I've seen these trends go around and come around. Textured art reminds me so much of the 80s - lots of plastery paint that gave 3-dimensionality to wall art, and texture in neutral textiles (I mourn the mohair rug that was undyed but woven with lots of texture - alas, I was alone in my fandom and it sold in a yard sale). Maybe I won't consign the textured plaster floor lamp to the trash heap, just yet...

Back in the late 80s I designed and built my family home in Brasil. Trends really do come and go! The guest shower and the kitchen backsplash are handmade tile, the master bath is in a ridiculously outrageous pink marble we were gifted at the time but it still looks amazing LOL, the boys bathroom was done in white and pale grey tiles in a checkerboard pattern on the floor and at the top of the half wall. I will let my ex and his wife know that the old house is super trendy now, since very little has changed there since it was built!! Fun video, thanks for all the info!

To me, a lot of these trends could be timeless if done in the right application. I feel like natural stones and marble are timeless. My husband and I just picked a pretty cool contrasting granite countertop that will really bring some interest into our home. I also LOVE handmade tile. I plan to do a handmade textured subway tile in my kitchen and maybe laundry room to give it some depth, but still have a timeless appeal. Also, I'm obsessed with the textured art. Video Idea: Would you consider maybe doing something on "European" wardrobes? So armoires rather than built-in closets and how needing them can be integrated into great bedrooms? I love watching American and Canadian Interior Content like yours but when you guys talk about bedrooms or closets, it almost always assumes the Northern American set up so your ideas are often not applicable to other countries (its probably outside of Europe, too). which is a shame because I would love to hear your opinions on armoire closets - it can be so hard to find nice ones!
@kaasmeester5903
@kaasmeester5903 Год назад
That's a nice suggestion. We recently got rid of our heavy armoire, and holy moly does our bedroom ever look lighter for it. We have chests of drawers now instead of the armoire, with the bits of clothing we need to hang relegated to the room that is our walk in closet / gym / random storage unit. I love our bedroom now, but if we could somehow bring an armoire back without killing the room, we would.
@janicevin4207

I think the trick with natural stone is to invest in as large a slab as you can, so that the stone itself - the veining, striations and texture - can become the star of the show. The more natural the material the more longevity it’ll have; the Parthenon, for instance, has never gone out of style!

The problem with painting ceiling is twofold: if people do not get the color and proportions right, the room will give the impression of collapsing, and two, the painted ceiling really has to match the furniture. I think another reason textured art has recently become popular (and will probably stay popular for a while) is a response to mass-produced art. We see all the time beautiful-looking things start to look cheaper once companies figure out how to mass produce something similar. Things just feel more human/authentic and therefore more upscale when you can tell at a glance they weren't mass-produced. You've talked about this with furniture on this channel before but it happens in many other areas too
@holographic80s

True I guess there are some types of mass produced ones. I’m just thinking in the best case scenario, some variants of textured art don’t look like it could be mass produced, they look more special. I like the idea of an interesting ceiling detail... but I find you have to be super careful with specifically what color you choose for the ceiling, because it will reflect on the people in the room. Not everyone looks good bathed in blue or green tinted light. Blushes and warm neutrals are a better choice in rooms that you spend time with other people in, and for the same reason this is why a natural wood ceiling is always a warm and classic choice. I think a powder room is a great place to try something like a bold color or wallpaper on the ceiling -- chances are you're not putting on makeup or spending a lot of time in there - but you can make a fun statement that is relatively easy to change later on.

If you love papered ceilings, just come to Japan! Every wall, every ceiling, every sliding door, is papered in some way (exceptions are the shower/bath room (but not the toilet room) and the tatami room (only room with a wood (or now plastic wood) ceiling).

Wow, for the first time in my life I'm "on trend" 😄...I just bought a checkerboard rug -the great thing about the "diamond" orientation of the squares is that it visually widens the narrow room that it's in!

I painted my bedroom's ceiling navy blue 2 years ago and I still love it, it's amazing and more cozy. But I live in an old apartment with high ceilings, so I don't mind that the room looks shorter now, it's actually better this way. Would think about painting the ceiling a darker color twice if I had low ceilings.

Sounds good painting or wallpaper on the ceiling. I once bought a house where this was done, not very well. It was a nightmare taking paper off the ceiling and getting rid of dark paint. I’m like you I’ll stick with a white ceiling. Thanks Nick. Xxx 😘

Our master bath is white wood to the “chair rail” and then dark green on the upper walls and ceiling all the way around. It’s gorgeous - really just flipping the white from the top to the bottom.

I’ll always think of a family friend’s Victorian when I see checkerboard. There was marble checkerboard in the entry and the main floor powder room. As for ceilings, same thing. There was a tin ceiling in the kitchen, a coffered ceiling with huge, ornate plaster round which the chandelier hung from and in the parlor, insane plaster crown, a gold textured wallpaper and the plaster medallion in that room was gold leafed. All of this was original to the home. There were also inlaid floors, carved newels, and Crystal or porcelain door knobs on all original doors. We’ve been livening up our spaces for centuries with cool stuff on the ceilings and floors. They’re your largest real estate… make them look good!

I do texture art using fabric and embellishments. About 15 years ago I painted 2 bedroom ceilings a lighter shade of the wall color. I liked it but hated painting it. This is the reason people will leave ceilings white. They don't have to repaint the ceilings as many times as the walls.

With Painted Ceilings you have to be aware of your space and the lighting - many times a dark painted ceiling makes the room feel smaller and oppressive. However, I live in an old house and 100 years ago wall paper on the ceiling was a big thing and I would love to see it back again.
