I bought a ktm 250 sx in the spring and I just picked up my 300 sx efi.. I got to ride it for about 45 min and now we have snow :( So far I love it but I'm looking forward to riding both back to back. It definitely pulls harder than the 250 but still very easy to ride. Can't wait to get more time on it. I'm actually thinking of making a you tube video to compare both bikes.. I'm thinking some people would want to see that comparison.
As always great work Michael! Looking forward to the lap time analysis (both fastest laps and average laps) - will be fun to see how the 300 stacks up against the 350/450SXF's. Also this all new chassis feels very different (in a good way) with a 300 2-stroke mounted inside vs the 350/450SXF engines - have the riders give some feedback on the chassis feel between the 2-stroke/4-strokes. Looking forward to the video!
There was 100% something wrong with that 300SX, and I thought so immediately after seeing those numbers. Dirtbikemag has the 450 and 300 within 5hp of each other (54,59)there’s no way in hell it made less horsepower than the 350. Also the torque numbers are all over the place.
Agreed! I rode a 24 300sx today and let me tell you it pulls like a 450 it’s absolutely insane. We also had a 350 EXC and it felt way tamer on the top end
I bought the 300sx a few weeks ago. Was debating this or the 350. I'm glad I got the 300. It costs less, maintenance is simpler and it's a bit lighter. And it's more fun to ride! I do think the 350 powerband is better. That bike holds power longer like my old 250sxf did.
@robd1859 No, not really. Even if it can match the power and torque of a 450 the 450 holds onto it's power for thousands of rpm longer than the 2 stroke can, which means I'm already shifting into the next gear and losing torque at the wheel.
Both are excellent bikes! You made a good choice. I'm more a 4-stroke guy as vet rider now. Can't beat power delivery of modern 450. Do like KTM 250/300SX tho. -Ohio
Love to see those Dino charts. I couldn’t really read them though they were kind of fuzzy and on the screen. It would be cool if you could post those charts at the end of the video in high def.
Lemme know how it feels on the track.. I have a '20 yz450.. thinking about jumping to a 2 stroke but don't want to have to shift...ever.....ever again lol
It's so odd to hear someone so smart with dirt bike (Race Tech) "it's surprising to see the two stroke being better in the torque curve and power curve." When there's not a stupid handicap, cc for cc the two stroke will out perform the four stroke every time.
My 2008 ktm sx 250 has a map switch (ignition switch basically) so i don't see why you are surprised by the map switch. Non the less the ktm sx 300 looks like the perfect do it all bike !!!
Yeah you pretty much answered the question yourself, you have an ignition timing map which does fk all. Where this has an ECU map switch making a large 2.5hp difference and opening up an aftermarket for tuning, like with a vortex
@@Runk3lsmcdougal ignition tuning it's a thing you know. And since the sx300 2023 has an ECU there was no way they wouldn't put a map switch, it's KTM.
The KTM is much lighter and has a stiffer frame, better suspension, and more power everywhere. Basically a clapped-out YZ250 ready to race. It's worth the money.
My 2020 FX350 pulls 52bhp and 30 lbs, I also have a 2023 Fc350 which feels more powerful, my 2020 FS 450 pulls 56bhp on the Dyno… all I can see is the 300 pulls 44bhp?
I’m not sure it would be as good as you would expect. The heavier the rotating assembly the less advantage you seem to get with 2 cycles. I would expect seeing 500s dyno against 450s, the results would be closer than you think.
I could care less about the 350 but seeing what that 300 makes compared to a 450. Ouch lol I guess there is no replacement for displacement. Assuming this is the same dyno. I could care less what the peak number is as long as it’s taken on the same dyno.
@@keithpeterson6108 - how do you know? Obviously you are entitled to your opinion. Different brands of dynos measure differently. Check MXA's 2022 450cc shootout. Four of the bikes made slightly over 58hp.
@Jaime Because MXA plays games with their dyno numbers. They use a conversion to go from rwhp to crank HP & they also use a bogus correction factor. It's a myth that dynos read differently unless they aren't calibrated properly (junk) or when the operator makes bogus correction factor numbers. MXA has 500's measured at the rear wheel & then gives 4t's bogus "corrected" numbers & use converted crank numbers. I own a dyno & have a number of friends who have them as well. Lots of BS out there. ...& I don't have an opinion. I have a dyno. It doesn't care about opinions pr feelings. It just says it like it is
350 four strokes should not even be in the equation because that's not the flagship of k t m. The 450 s x f is their flagship. The question is how to make the 300sxas fast or faster than 450 sxf
@@jonathoncatterson8901 not on the same dyno I wouldn’t think. Tends to be 3-4hp in a pipe, fuel and 2 degrees timing on a yz250. 6.5hp stock is a game changer
Seems right. Keep in mind not every dyno is the same, and in fact they almost always read some what different. For a comparison MXA says the ktm350 makes like 54HP while this dyno showed it topping out around 50hp. It just shows the difference between dynos. This one may just happen to run a little low, but I know many of the shops around me also usually come up with lower numbers then what some of the magazines come up with.
I just think all these magazines and manufacturers lie about hp. I've seen so many different hp numbers for yz250 I don't even know what to believe anymore
@@Fvission - so true! This dyno reads very low, pessimistic numbers. YZ250 two strokes and KTM 250 SX have been measured at 46 and 48hp respectively on Pro Circuit's dyno. There are three types of dyno configurations - inertial. A/C and Eddie current. Measurements are different.
The comparison is what matters at the end but when you post numbers you have to be a little near the reality… 300 2t 44 hp ??? what dyno is that ??? they are differences between dynos but the power is one. Calibrate your dynos or don’t post numbers at all… and the 350 from 2014 till now every year loses hp…
The majority of test we see in moto are on dynojets, which are known to ready quite high and close to the power output of the engine before drivetrain loss. The Race Tech dyno is an eddie current style, it reads lower and closer to the engine with the drivetrain loss.
I have to agree with the horsepower comment. My 2017 350 xcf definitely feels stronger than the 23 versions I have ridden back to back. KTM rated the 2017 as having 58 horsepower from the factory which I think is exaggerated number but it sure feels like it sometimes.
It's a damn expensive dirt bike and I believe the end is coming to two stroke engines due to stricter emissions regulations. "To equal the hydrocarbon emissions of about a half-hour of yard work with this two-stroke leaf blower, you'd have to drive a Raptor for 3,887 miles, or the distance from Northern Texas to Anchorage, Alaska.”
the last thing I want from my 2 stroke is to be like a 4 stroke. i don't understand this type of thinking. people say the cost of 4 strokes ruined MX people say the power of strokes ruined MX people say the weight of 4 strokes ruined MX if 4 strokes have "ruined" this sport (especially SX), it's for one reason only. Traction. I've been say this for 20 years: more traction = less fun 2 stroke = least traction = most fun 4 stroke = more traction = less fun electric = most traction = least fun this is the difference. this is why racing isn't as exited and this is the reason electric is going to be even less exiting.... for no other reason.. the whole entire essence of "off-road" racing is that it takes place on loose, less predictable terrain, as opposed to road racing and it's consistant traction.
Professionals will always want what is most predictable and so do most customers. If you think racing is ruined and think traction is lame...might just be a personal problem..btw i ride and race 2 strokes but its not because of the traction. I think you are a bit confused.
You are exactly 110% right. I want my 2-stroke MX bikes to run and ride the Opposite of a 4-stroke. I want snappy, explosive power, hard hitting on/off powerband. An a 2-stroke that I’ve gotta work the clutch hard to keep on the pipe. If I wanted smooth, liner, controllable, torque’ power I’d buy a 4-stroke !
From a lifetime 2-stroke specialist-There is so much more to be gained from a a 2S that can get the power to the ground in a predictable way. You may think it is not 2-stroke enough but you forget all the other great aspects of feel and lightness and flickability. A snappy but not light switch power will only improve all of these already superior features. 4S are boring to me but I’m pretty sure my new 300 won’t be when i get it. Think about the whole package.
You obviously haven't ridden the Alta MXR, as in map 4 you get 50 horsepower all at once if you want it, and it's just pure tire spin everywhere. Drift city. So much power, more than the 300 2 stroke, lol
