I have my Land Rover Defender for a year now and here are somethings I love and don't love about it. Subscribe for more car videos to come.... #landrover #defender #ownership
Have a 2021 x5 and haven’t had a single issue. No rattles, music issues, Bluetooth, fluids, oil, etc. and it averages closer to 20mpg. Love defender design but can’t imagine dealing with all that.
Just ordered one in diesel, here in Europe. Santorini black 110 with air suspension. Car is MUCH bigger in reality than on pics. I used to have BWMs X5,X6, so far
I have had so much worse that some of these similar issues don't bother me. I've had the speakers do the same but they fixed themselves. I've had the screens go black until I turn off and back on. I love the white roof and side panels. super cool idea.
Coming from the hi-fi world, Meridian was the pioneer of digital audio (think CD era, in late 1980s) and quite iconic. Of course, they become more known for their licensed technology - MQA and MLP (for DVD audio). It's pretty sad they licensed their name to such a subpar experience.
@@TanDiego Very similar experience so far. 1 trip to the dealership at 7Kmiles. My dealership in NY (New Rochelle) has been great. Audio issue happens from time to time. I found that amazon music works great with the meridian sound system, my tidal music app is too powerful. i have the S so i have the same tougher leathers which i like for when kids are in the car. The bigger screen, ambient lighting and refrigerator are all a plus and great value compared to the new pricing of cars today.
Many thanks for sharing your valuable experiences with us. As an owner of a V8 new Defender, some problems are the same such as the noise of the door ceiling or the audio system quality - which forced me to upgrade it to an aftermarket set totally - the biggest issue that I face is I have to add ONE GALLON or so of engine oil within every 6 months! Most of the V8 owners have the same trouble, and the service center mentioned it's normal for a JLR's V8 engine! Except for that, I love my Defender, and she took me over the areas that I never believed to go.
Huh you are serious? One gallon? Tell me you were joking. I am looking into Land Cruiser or Lexus GX550. Would really want to try defender since u off road a lot in winter. But I am afraid it will be disappointing
Seems to me that no matter what vehicle or manufacturer you obtain a vehicle from since 2018 on that there are complaints. The irony is that while Range Rover/Land Rover historically has problems most domestic AND import vehicles are experiencing multiple recalls. Having driven the new go 550 AND a used 2024 Defender S, both of which have owner complaints, I found the Defender preferable overall. The reality is ALL cars/trucks/suv’s have issues and are cost prohibitive whether by purchase or maintenance cost. At least Range Rover/Land Rover doesn’t threaten their customers with law suits when they complain publicly like Toyota does… 🤷🏽♂️
Thanks for the honest review. Always wanted a defender, but it seems to me that there is just some problem keep going on and i dont want to deal with the dealership every few months
I have a 2022 LR Defender 110; love the look, and the ride; engine (at least I think) and trans are solid; the glitchy software is what why I will very likely sell and buy new Land Cruiser. Almost every day I drive it I get “Check engine coolant level” warning even when I know it is 100% topped off. The dealer can’t figure out what that light comes on multiple times a day and I am just hoping nothing is going on internally with engine. One other thing that might be quality control is front seat heat. When you select heat to come out of lower floor vents, feet always get cold which has never happened in any other car I’ve owned (2 Forerunners; 1 Tacoma; 1 Land Cruiser).
ohh noo, I would look into the lemon law. If you keep taking it to the dealer and they can't find a solution, you can get a refund, I went through this with my first F-type.
Absolute rubbish my 110 2023 diesel worst ever ,build quality and now turbo problems very very disappointing, now fighting to get my money back You have been warned
Good video, thank you. I debated for MONTHS between this and the 2023 Lexus GX 460. I love the look of the Defender over the Lexus, but I ended up getting the lexus due to legendary reliability. Plus, a buddy bought the 23 defender with the V6 and it’s been at the dealer EVERY week. I’m envious of how great your Defender looks though 👍🏻
I’m a 2016 Lexus RX owner and I’m considering the Defender 110 or the new GX 550. My RX hasn’t been to the dealer in nearly 8 years except for routine maintenance. My nerves could never handle your RR dealer experience. GX 550 is the choice. As a long term Lexus owner (1993 LS 400 was my first Lexus) I’m spoiled rotten with the excellent build quality but I truly admire your calm acceptance of the reality of owning a Defender. Thank you for your honest and fair review. I’m subscribed!!
@@DanBudda thank you, I love my defender design but I would probably consider the Lexus too 😅 I also like cars that you don’t see often and I feel like you will see a lot of the GX on the road
Good honest review. You perfectly described the interactions i have had with my Land Rover dealer for my wifes Discovery. They pretend im the only one with the issue and then i find out later that everyone has the same problems. They fix it and usually it happens again. Very frustrating when you buy a truck new to avoid the hassles of owning used. Thanks for the info.
I agree with you and I do not understand why people think these are minor problems. I had exotics that are more reliable than this. I want defender since I do lots of winter off roading but boy this sounds like nightmare. I have demanding job I do not have time to deal with all this nonsense
They look so good but the built quality is not the best. We also have a Hyundai suv and it’s quality and tech blow this out of the water. Isn’t that sad.I still love the Defender but the quality of all Land Rover products need to improve
Yeah to your point on the new Toyota & Lexus coming out, I hope that JLR makes it a point to try and hire some Toyota engineers lol. Great video, hope you get to enjoy your 110 year with minimal issues
@@jayesh5131 JLR- Last 2 Rubicon 4xe and they were both flawless , fun to drive and no high costs on any end. Granted not as luxurious but Land Rover could learn a few things perhaps on how to improve their own service and management style.
@@emmetius_ezgaming My Rubicon 4xe was very luxurious. Equal to that of my previous Range Rover Evoque. The Jeep may not be a sports car but I found it to drive respectfully and it was comfortable overall. It never developed a single rattle unlike the LR products, it was quite fast, and really fun to drive. I'd say that my $65,000 Jeep was a great truck and the Defender, which I drove a few times but don't own is nicer but not a huge leap by any means. The dilemma at this point is do I just get a new 2025 4Runner or go with my heart and get a Defender. I think I already know the answer and it's illogical but the Defender will give me goosebumps , or more if it breaks. PS. I should add that while I debate over what vehicle to purchase or lease, I've been driving our 1976 VW Bus Camper for the last few months as a daily driver and I just love that thing. Luxury- no, fun, yes, reliable, yes for now but it is a 48 year old vehicle. My wife's car is a Ford Mustang Mach-e All 4, all electric car and it is FUN!!!!!. LOL.
Use pure synthetic oil and change it every 5k miles. 20k oil is not a thing. I get mine changed at Mavis for $145 including oil filter. Oil people know oil and engines. Trust them
I had the same problem with the transmission going into neutral at stops. I brought it to dealer. They knew about the problem. Evidently a software issue. I haven’t had a with since. I also think the service is expensive. My dealers had 3 levels for 21k service. $1,000 for base and went up from there. There are cheaper vehicles that are similar. But IMO none as good looking for the price. Enjoy it.
Yea I still love the look. My only problem now is with the bluetooth. I actually went and got it serviced at a local shop for $600, they did an oil and cabin filter change.
@@TanDiego I just paid $300 for oil and filter. Change from LandRover dealer. I probably could have saved money by shipping. But it was already at LandRover for seat belt light on.
Don't fall for that trap regarding longer oil changes. It'll eat up your money in the end. you reside in hot/warm climate, do your oil changes early. I'd do the oil changes myself w/that vs coughing a $2k expensive oil change service - ask what else they do for such a cost, that is a rip off.
I hear you, I think it's a big service including flushing out the other liquids, not excited about it but I do need a loaner car from them for work. We shall see if I can find a shop that will work on it.
Thank you, I was looking to see if I had a lemon, I had solr issue sounding like blown splr, my car wouldn’t start in cold weather and same issue happened a few times. It then started shutting off on its own. Ofcourse dealer cant figured out the issue and said a peice of tape was between a bolt and starter 🤔 why after 3 visits the find this. I love the car is unique, sporty and luxury all in one. But not knowing if these issues will continue after warranty idk if I can keep it.
Great video thank you from a prospective buyer. Did you purchase the Defender or lease it...and why ? I am a buy and hold kind of car person so want this to be reliable, vs ditching at the first issue. Love the Defender's design too but the reliability is scaring me. Why not make them solid, I just don't get it. I am looking at the SUV's you talked about Land Cruiser and 4Runner; those are slow to come out to Canada and the Toyota dealers here are already being difficult to deal with and expecting premium dealer cost additions above MSRP. By the time the LC comes here it will be as much $ as the Defender.
You are so welcome! Not sure if you can buy here and bring back to Canada? When I bought in 2022, there was an allocation rule but maybe that changed? I wanted to lease but at the time the lease numbers were worst than finance. I have hear about the land cruiser price markups reaching to $100k which is crazy. Besides those issues that I have stated, there are no new issue so far with my defender. I drive it everyday and I am fine with it. I am still enjoying it to this day. Have you try looking into the Lexus GX?
@@TanDiego yep the GX is on my list to test. Import a new car to Canada is difficult and they just make it more expensive with red tape too so you don’t just buy a new car like that . I have time and will look around. As I said, I am a reliability nut so the RR’s are a bit iffy for me other than LOVING their looks. Maybe lease one and ditch if not up to snuff.
Your review was honest and thorough. I keep feeling on the fence about purchasing a Defender. I love it, but the 3 Land Rovers I've owned in the past were awful. $2000 for a 21K service just seems insane to me though. Lots of annoying quality issues, electrical etc. always wondering if it will make a trip. Part of me just wants to get a 4Runner and be done with it. Great truck, but not goosebumps I get with Land Rover. Maybe I'm confusing goosebumps with hives. LOL.
haha, yea I hear you, i'm still having problems with the bluetooth. I actually just took it to a shop for an oil and cabin filter change and they charged me $600, not sure if it was worth it but better than $2k I guess.
Great review, I was just wondering how come your rear indicators light up the whole side.like the brake lights and all light up except for the actual yellow indicators. Is that a mod you did?
@@zamil666 thank you, I don’t have any yellow indicators in the back, they are all red and I think in the US, they all light up when turning. I don’t have any light mods.
Me to never had problems. Defender 130 old school. Defender 90 limited edition. BMW engin defender 110 .. never had issues and I used them for work hauling staging equip
They are noisy, I think after these ones, I will go back to Toyos. I think it does effect the gas but I don't really pay attention, I do notice that the outer ridge is wearing faster than I expected.
@@TanDiego the tires might take an extra mile per gallon off but I wouldn’t think any more than 2 MPG. As far as the all terrain tires go just make sure you get them rotated with each oil change and this will help the tires wear evenly. If the outer ridge wears too much on the AT tires you’ll feel it start to pull one way easier than the other and that would be a shame for such a beautiful and smooth ride.
Hi there! I would, I have not run into any situation where I fee like I would get stranded with this truck but I would keep any form of emergency contact device close by also.
I just ordered a 2024 Defender same model. I had to order it because I wanted HUD. I am coming from a 2020 Lexus GX 460 which I had zero mechanical issues. My biggest complaint is the infotainment system was so outdated but worked. I decided not to get the new Base GX 550 because the price was the same as the Base Defender 110 with upgrades. After watching this review I'm considering letting them have the 1K dollars and stick with Lexus Brand. Sorry to draw this question out but would you buy this vehicle again after the purchase. Also, if you have driven a GX how does it compare to a Defender? Thanks in advance.
Oh no, don't loose that $1k, was that for custom ordering? Not sure why you were charged that but I did not have to pay for an ordering fee. I have driven a GX last gen, it was okay. I just love the euro designed cars and I still love the design of the defender, call me crazy but I might try to get the V8 😬 I think in general, the build quality has gone down in cars, doesn't really matter which brand, I read auto blogs daily and I see all kinds of recalls with different manufacturers. The good thing with a new car is that you have a warranty and if they can't fix something, there's the lemon law but life is short, drive something that will bring you joy!
@TanDiego The 1k was for adding HUD. They said they couldn't find one with it already installed at that trim level. I did really enjoy the way the Defender drove. Thanks for your response and informative video. I will continue to watch your post. Like someone already said those rims are 👌
Lolz @ 21k oil change interval. That’s not good because after 10k miles the car could eat oil and you would never know. By the time u do the 21k oil change you can damage the engine. I would change the oil every 10,000 miles at mechanic and let the dealer do every Otha oil change
When you purchase the pre paid maintenance the dealer only wants to change the oil at the recommended mileage. So it’s best you do an oil change in between someplace else. When u do a dealer oil change it’s more money but they do other things to the car besides the oil change like update the computer, any recalls on the vehicle or any other stuff in the car that’s a problem. Also when they change the oil if the plastic cover rips or u need plastic screws or bolts or something is damaged they will put a new one on. Independent mechanic won’t do that they will put it on without the missing bolt or screw or u gonna have to buy a plastic cover from the dealer.
The Land Rover/Range Rovers from the late 80's to now have never been reliable....NEVER! You would think by now ( 2020's) they would have sorted out all the kinks and issues that seem to religiously haunt such a legendary vehicle?
Thanks for posting. I have a 2024 Defender 90 on order and your video (like some few others) are informative of the potential issues I may encounter. Please post updates (e.g., after your first service visit).
I've got a 2024 defender 110 D250 on order as well, I receive it on the 20th of September, I currently drive a 2021 Discovery 5 and have done 81k miles since factory new and I've loved it, no issues, services are a little expensive (£580) but to be expected, did have a very expensive service when I hit 60K it was around £1.5k - looking forward to my new one :)
