Girls Race Recap
Ritzenhein Wins Individual Race, Bethany Michalak Leads Academy's Team As Colorado Shows Out In Girls Championship
By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor
Coloradoans enjoyed a watershed day on a water-logged course on Saturday at Nike Cross Nationals in the girls championship race.
Niwot sophomore Addison Ritzenhein displayed the same championship mettle of her father as she reeled in mid-race leader Elizabeth Leachman and went on to win in 17:10.4.
Bethany Michalak, right behind her in second, led Academy to Colorado's first NXN team championship with 61 points.
"Conditions were perfect considering we're from Colorado," Ritzenhein said. "I guess I really like the mud."
Colorado teams swept the top three spots. Niwot was second with 72 points and Denver was third with 163 points.
Lone Peak from Utah finished with 201 points, completing a four-team sweep of the top spots by the Southwest region.
Emily Wisniewski, the Oregon and NXR Northwest won a photo finish for third place with another Colorado athlete, Isabel Allori, as both finished within the same tenth of a second with 17:37.4.
Pre-race favorites Rachel Forsyth and Leachman ran with confidence out of the gate.
Forsyth, the NXR Midwest champion from Ann Arbor, Mich., sprinted out to the lead and led for the first 1,000 meters of the race.
That's when Leachman of Boerne, Texas zoomed past Forsyth and shot into the lead. There were moments when it seemed Leachman would run away with it and she built a 15-second lead by the 3,000-meter mark.
But Ritzenhein and Michalak slowly reeled in Leachman in. And when Ritzenhein took the lead she really started to roll and powered through the final mile.
Ritzenhein's father, Dathan, an Olympian, won two Foot Locker national championships in 1999 and 2000. Her mother, Kalin Toedebusch, was a classmate of Dathan at Rockford High in Michigan and was also a standout runner who placed fifth in the 2000 Foot Locker final.

Hey Elizabeth Leachman. You are doing great this time. Next year it will be yours. I am watching you. Keep up the good work. I was cross country runner during high school in 1966. Now today is better than in 1966.

When I saw on the Leader Board that Holly was in 20th place, I started keying in when they showed the pack. Sure enough at the 12:00 minute mark she comes into the split screen picture in that unmistakable stride of hers. What a great young runner. I just became aware of her, watching the recent Southern Section and State championships. I watched a couple of interviews and was impressed by her infectious positive attitude. Great future ahead, I agree. On another note check out the recent interview by Citius Mag with Parker Valby. Excellent! At one point the interviewer asks her about the rivalry with her and Tuohy. She says how much she respects Kaitlyn and is honored to be mentioned in the same breath with her. Very down to earth, gracious and humble.

When will Americans stop calling kilometres kilos. A kilo is a weight measurement while a kilometre is distance

No, a kilogram is a mass measurement. If you can shorten one term, we can shorten the other.

It's because we don't give af about the metric system, and hardly ever use it, except on rare occasions such as XC races. I wish we would just ditch the stupid metric system all together. Imperial system all the way.

I'm American, and I rarely hear this. Everyone I ever talked to just called it a K. I'm not sure what the announcer's background is that he says kilo, but it's not a blanket American thing.

@machineofadream 5 месяцев назад
Cross country is one of the cheapest sports you can compete in. The hard part of participating in the race is qualifying. The fee is pretty small. Isn't it $25 per person? And it's not like any other race in the whole year has an entry fee. I ran XC for 4 years and never paid for anything but my shoes. Plus, anyone qualifying for this meet as an individual is on pace to get a full scholarship to a division 1 school. Money is definitely NOT the reason for whatever you're babbling about.

@@machineofadream Distance running is a very time intensive sport where performance is dependant on consistency over a long period of time and there's maybe an argument to be made that kids from poorer backgrounds tend to have less spare time/more chaotic home lives. It's also possible that kids from rougher neighbourhoods do not want/are not allowed to run outside where they live, so these kids never develop the ability to make these races to begin with. Poorer schools are also less likely to have the systems in place to identify and nurture distance running talent. Edit: Then there's the factor that wealthier kids will tend to have healthier diets. And high quality running shoes are bloody expensive too and make all the difference compared to the cheap plodders All these factors add up. It's undeniable that distance running is a very middle class sport in western countries and it's not just random chance

race leader near 4km was at 13'44" then ends with a near static 4'07" last km to finish 17th. Anything under 3'50" for the last km she would've held on for third. Ouch. I ran sub 18 5kms over 100 times - no way I'd ever let that happen with just 1km to go from 13'44". One run was 13'48" at 4km to finish 16'54", hers went to 17'5x" - smh - come on.
