Atlas Stormmaster class 4 is great. After a recent hail event in June 2023, roofers were backed up with work, materials hard to get, and the home owners with Atlas StormMaster class 4 just watched the chaos all around them. Roofers were checking out my 2008 roof from all sides, and I'll bet they were wondering what it was. There was'nt a mark on it, while those all around me were a mess. To put up anything but class 4 in my area is just plain nuts.

Thank you for your insight and rating information on the various roofing shingles. In the process of having to replace my roof. In 2022 we discovered a mold situation in the attic. Our insurance company would not approve the claim because they said the roof shingles were not properly installed. So we hired a mold remediation company come out to remove the mold and were told we needed to improve ventilation in the attic to prevent it from coming back. We installed 2 attic fans, also had a roofer come out and do the cut out for the ridge vent which apparently was not properly done in 2005 when we doubled the size of our home. We also had to install ventilated soffits because the ones that were installed during the construction were not the vented type. We have had an occasional leak but the use of roofing caulk in certain locations sealed the issue. Now we are having to replace the roof shingles. Have only had one company rep come out and the estimate is almost $16,000 for GAF Timberline HDZ. Honestly I do not want to use Timberline since that is what I currently have (Timberline HD 30 year warranty) and I have had issues with it. I am in NJ so not sure if I can get Malarkey out here or if it is even in my price range as we will have to pay out of pocket. I am also considering Certainteed Landmark or Grand Manor and Owens Corning Duration or Oakridge. What is your opinion? Again I don't know if any of these lines are available in my area. Most homeowners here use Timberline or Tamko and I don't want either. Wish me luck!!!

I have seen the certainteed landmark shingles in my hand ,direct compared to malarky vista samples... the certainteed,shed granules like a dog sheds hair..the vista granules are literally infused into the asphalt/polymer..they are Tightly bound and do not shed And are yards more flexible....as far as certainteed in actual use, I have a friend who has had them replaced after only just over 10 yrs... we had a hale storm, but the shingles were showing severe granule loss aside from the hale damage.

I appreciate your time and effort. We were heavy users of GAF but have started using OC more and more. OC quality control seems more consistent on things like even lines and no small pieces of material left on the edge of some of the shingles. That small piece of material is a rhythm buster when you have to stop and rip it off. Thanks and keep on analyzing for us.

Every year we look forward to the shingle guide. We strive to bring the best products and options to our clients and this guide has been a regular part or our sales process. The reason it has been powerful is because it has been a true, first hand test of the shingles, in an honest and transparent way, with all parties invited to the table. We have always appreciated Dmitry and Roofing Insights efforts into making the industry better, and have modeled a lot of our business on your recommendations and advice.... However I am disappointed in this years guide. I feel that in past years, your guide has been transparent and contractor/consumer focused. This year, the guide is vague, and feels more like a product and installer pitch or promotion than a true test of the shingles on the market. Based on the past work we have seen from Roofing Insights, I would like to believe that the due diligence was done but I believe Roofing Insights would agree, that the proof is in the pudding. We got to see none of the testing, or know any of the criteria/benchmarks. If Tamco was garbage, why didn't we see why? In the past, contractors and manufacturers have been invited to the testing to ensure that it was fair and impartial. Did this happen this year? If so, why didn't we see it? Where is GAF? I don't install it, but it's one of the most popular brands on the market... why was it excluded? If it was excluded because it didn't meet the minimum standard, shouldn't we know this? If you didn't include them because they told you not to, shouldn't this be in the guide? Hopefully this years guide was an honest assessment, but I will not be able to use this years guide as a part of our process or a trustworthy resource because it's not transparent and that is who we are as a company. We use some of the top rated shingles discussed in this "assessment" and have had this guide to back our choices in the past with real world proof that our clients could see for themselves. I guess I just have to take your word for it. I'll see how that approach flies with my clients.
@Im2bz2p345
@Im2bz2p345 7 месяцев назад
Completely agree with @shieldroofingsystems. Please go back to showing the actual testing going on & how you tested each shingle. Also show why certain brands were excluded (be transparent - ie GAF's legal team doesn't allow it). Also, I really like the suggestion from another viewer about showing a map of which regions each manufacturer primarily distributes their products in. That's what differentiated your YT channel versus the hundreds of other roofing comparisons. So just like you listen to roofers for feedback, I hope you read these comments & listen to your audience about feedback.

Hi There, I live in Oregon, I have a house in the Portland Area, and a couple years ago I installed the Malarkey Vista, Great Product. I also have a house on the Oregon Coast, "Beach Front" . I have been contemplating which product to use. It was between OC and Malarkey Legacy. The Malarkey will be slightly more expensive, but I also believe that it will be a better product for the environment. Giving that the house is beach front with High Winds and Tormented by Mother Nature. Thanks for your Video.

I bought Malarkey Legacy, due to this recommendation, and others. I love it, but i got mine installed when it was too hot, and there are blemishes like roofer foot prints. If i had it to do over, i would have did it when the roof was cooler.I would have paid whatever, to have them work till noon or so. Im hoping the Oklahoma summer heat smooths it out. Otherwise, i have to do some repairs. I will love that rubber mix when the hail comes, but its stressing me right now.

I’m a Texas roofing contractor. It will not get better. For what it’s worth it is normally simply a cosmetic issue. We recommend to customers not to install in summer months for that reason. If you have a roofer replace scarred shingles do it in cooler time of year. These products seal so well it’s hard to effectively make repairs without making it worse.

It is interesting to see how popular shingles are in the US. Here in Europe they are very popular for garden sheds. However, for houses we still use roof tiles. They last about 40 to 50 years. However, I can imagine that of you are in a tornado area, you dont want concrete roof tiles flying around.

Exactly. Tiles are great but the US East coast gets hurricanes, some of middle America gets tornadoes, and West coast gets earthquakes. Materials used are picked accordingly.

It's probably okay that IKO Dynasty packages are open on both sides. When stored outdoors, condensation can form inside due to temperature changes. Therefore, with open ends, the product gets ventilated, while the package is sealed the condensation stays inside. In fact, the packages are stored in a horizontal position, and the shingles are tightly packed, so I don't think water gets inside deeply. It is just my opinion.

The bundle end closed does not keep the water out one of the reasons I dislike the Atlas packaging is that the end of the package is closed and it traps the water inside the bundle so like in the winter time, a lot of the bundles will be frozen together because the water can’t drain out and it becomes a problem when installing you can’t get the shingles apart

The only reason GAF shingles exists today is due to their purchase of Elk nearly 20 years ago. I managed a roofing supply yard in central California from 2002 to 2014 our most successful line had been the Elk and Malarkey lines. By 2006 , after the GAF change and offering other lines such as Certainteed, Iko and feedback from other yards in the corporation I worked for, I decided to only supply one brand of shingle, Malarkey. I received fantastic support from the roofing contractors , no one felt limited in their offerings, obviously buying power allowed all of us to benefit, availability was never an issue during any of the early decades asphalt shortages. We took a unique marketing approach that served us all very well during the downturn of 06 thru 09. Home owners would come by to inquire regarding products and when asked my opinion, I would show them my stock, affirming that we belived so strongly in its quality that we would not support another brand. Saying no to other lines was actually very easy, especially as time went by. Malarkey brand shingles were very well designed, manufactured and supported, in that period, more advanced in their design and function. I would like to add that Malarkey was if I am remembering correctly, the last to market their shingles under the " lifetime" warranty con job that occurred in the 10s. Also the 3 bundle math was, is, a joke that continues apparently to this day. 4 bundles per square is simply more honest. Very good presentation by you. Thank you.

Malarky stopped reporting their shingle weight on the tech data sheet in 2018-19, the highlander used to be 245lb/sq. Now it’s 205. Funny how all the shingle maker have an entry level shingle at 205#/sq. And the all raise prices simultaneously and aggressively while asphalt is dropping. Federal Trade Commission needs to investigate for price fixing.

I totally agree. I live in SE Texas 45 miles off the Gulf of Mexico. There's plenty of humidity that sets up mold/mildew on roofs. Along with that is the potential of hurricanes and hail. The county I live in isn't windstorm certified by insurance companies although should be taken in consideration. It would be nice to have recommendations of shingles for this region along the Gulf of Mexico for the above mentioned conditions.

First off I am NOT a roofing contractor. I took a roofing job in Louisiana back in 1980 and was schooled by the owner of the company. In 1996 I needed to replace the roof on my house in Tacoma Washington. I purchased Owen's Corning 20 year 3 tab shingles maybe it was 25 year, to long ago to be sure. I've never had a leak and I've had 60 mph winds and never lost a shingle. My roof was damaged by a dump truck that raised one side of my roof off my house a few years ago while the contractor was putting in a concrete driveway. Out of concern for a possible leak I had it tarped. Wouldn't you know it the only place it leaked was where they put the nails in to hold the tarp down. I've been busy, lazy and cheap and have not fixed the roof just retarped it myself twice over the last 11 years. Well..this year I'm repairing my roof and will re shingle it. I will also be putting new sheathing over it as the old roof is in 6 inch T&G planks and been there since 1954. The wood has contracted so there are gaps between boards and in a couple of places I had to cut some areas out and put 3/4 inch plywood. I shingled it with the gaps 28 years ago but I'll sheath it this time. My plan is to use 15/32" plywood. I'm still debating shingle brand. Its between Malarkey, Owen's Corning, and Certaineed.

Now that I’m on roofing side I will say the following without bias: GAF and Tamko are miserable. OC is a good product but sometimes difficult, all depends on rep for your territory. Certainteed, love the product when it goes right but is very inconsistent and mainly only use on full system when large amounts flintlastic are used. I hated selling against Atlas Pinnacle Pristine when with IKO and it’s my number 2 shingle behind IKO Dynasty. #opinion #nomalarkyinSE. On atlas: why farm out to 3m?

Do you have any recommendations for the best shingle and underlayment products for noise reduction through the roof? (Think airplane flyovers.) My understanding is that this is a situation in which thicker and heavier materials are going to perform better. -Heavy architectural asphalt shingles with plenty of overlap. On underlayment, I see it as plausible that a 30 lb Felt underlayment could be best for noise reduction, but there are thicker, heavier synthetic underlayments, too... I'm in the Seattle area so water is a real problem, which makes me think felt is a bad choice, but are there other underlayment products that should be good at reducing noise?

Hi, I started watching this channel recently. I am in the market for replacing my roof and wanted to ask for recommendations for better brands of shingles for my Houston area home. Is it worth paying extra for class 4-rated shingles for Houston?

From what I've been able to figure out, Class 4 is a good idea for hail prone areas and I'm pretty sure Houston is one of those.

Im looking at Atlas vs OC. Am i missing something? From what from what i read they rated the same with wind etc. I was also told they also have the same sure nail stuff but maybe not a strip that says it. Why did you rate Atlas higher but want to OC on your house? Just cuz its 2" wider?

Next year please consider Atlas Pinnacle IMPACT. Much cheaper than StormMaster and still Class 4. The Pinnacle Pristine is also a Class 3 and they are less expensive than some of the bigger brands. Thanks for the great videos.

Thoughts on GAF? Thank you
@JUSTCUROIUS
@JUSTCUROIUS Год назад
I agree completely. Gaf is trash. Good for rentals. Same with CertainTeed. To be honest wouldn't surprise me if they were partner companies. oc is a solid go to. Atlas and iko are my go to. Malarkey isn't available in South East Virginia. Wish they were. I'm not a fan of asphalt shingles in our area but they are cheap. F-wave and euroshield are my preferred materials for our area. Very high wind at times, lots of moisture and humidity, and high salt content in the air. Asphalt just doesn't do well in those conditions period.

We suffered roof damage from Hurricane Idalia in Northern Florida. Our insurance company has already approved replacing the roof on our house, our shop and our attached metal carport. All of the bids we have been receiving from roofers in our area have been offering only Tamako, Owen's Corning and GAF. We had already decided that we do not want Tamako shingles. We are leaning towards either Owen's Corning Duration or GAF Timberline HDZ, installed by one of their Elite contractors so we would get all the GAF warranties. Can you explain why you left GAF out of your 2023 ratings? From what I understand, their TImberline Hdz shingles are widely used and very popular, for many reasons. Having never gone through something like this before, and being complete novices about replacing roofs, we are trying to educate ourselves on the best choices. The amount of information is overwhelming and confusing! If you could explain why you left GAF Timberline HDZ out of your ratings, I think that would be very useful information for us. Thank you so much!

Can Anyone elaborate on the blister defects of malarky shingles...I was gun ho as far as thinking these were The Best out there, then talked with a roofer who really liked them but recommended Not using them in my area which has temps 100-115 during summers.. he said same thing, that he has seen blistering due to the heat.. My other question is regarding certainteed granule loss and issues with their aghesive not properly adhering..... My last choice was GAF, but man!< these shingles feel like garbage compared to the other 2...thin, brittle, crack easily ... warranty seems great though... Im at a loss , there seems issues with almost all choices...

I had a roofer tell me the same thing. He was high on them overall, but noted this specific issue (also in TX). That makes me nervous having a new facility. I like OC, but I don't think their variation works with my brick variation and I'm limited by HOA too.

@@Rezfin Hi brother, thanks for reply! I am being pressed by our insurance company to get shingles on the roof.. certainteed, Gaf are the most commonly used in my area.. I hear about issues with certainteed granule loss and lack of adhesion from almost every roofer Ive spoken with.. not keen on GAF ..Ive dismissed malarkey ,reluctantly, and this has left me considering owens corning duration... I may just go with these as I'm fed up with the amount of issues that ive found with the other brands...no shingle is perfect but really, there ought to be a Consistancy amongst those who have experience and have tried these brands.. Reviewers and homeowners both will tell you conflicting opinions regards shingles which really leaves us to make our best choice...

First, I want to thank you for ALL the info. I have begun my trip dow the roofing rabbit hole and you have offered SO much invaluable info. I just contacted a business from your directory and one of the first things out of their mouth pertianed to insurance. I found that unsettling. Please correct me if I am wrong but I automatically jump to an assumption that their price will be linked to out of pocket v. insurance and I don't like it. Am I wrong for questioning this? Also, they are having a sales rep contact me to set up an appointment for a roof check. I did ask if the person assessing the damage was an actual roofer and yes, he is. I then asked if the person doing the inspection would be the one to whom I would address all questions pertaining to shingle performance when choosing a new shingle. They said I would need to talk to the customer service rep... who has never nailed down a shingle in his life. Should I be alarmed or dissuaded by this?
@lynnebucher6537
@lynnebucher6537 3 месяца назад
In my state (Florida) price definitely is linked to whether you are out of pocket or insurance. Now I understand it can be a pain and time consuming to deal with insurance companies and that must be compensated, but I believe many roofers in my area charge our insurance companies FAR more than what is necessary to reimburse the time cost of that additional hassle. One of the roofers I recently got a repair quote from aggressively pushed for my filing an insurance claim and wouldn't even tell me what my out of pocket cost for total re-roof would be. So IMO, he's hiding something.
