Looks like fun and I may want to own one, however I am waiting to see the retroRC biplane review! As (I) myself am just sport flying, it would be great if more kit makers would give the option of purchase a single kit like John does from lasercut planes....having said that I do understand the Value of a competitive student having a backup model...shoot, even I Love 2 kits as I love to sort balsa wood and make a light version....the only problem is buying a 2 pack from All the makers can add up the $, particularly this one...I do see extras in this kit like 3 sizes of motor that certainly add cost. Having said all that, I never regret quality time spent at the building board. I appreciate all you do for the sport Josh. PS: the fly away OSS outdoors was great!... Though I am sorry you lost your aircraft.

I understand the attraction to the single kits, however the scioly planes tend to lead demanding, destructive lives, with most students going through 4-5 airplanes per season. Some go through many more. You'll like the RRC biplane. It's a nice build and a good flier, although it doesn't get along great with the IFFS propeller. I found that mine flies much better on the Ikara props.

Hello Mr. Finn, I got some guru engineering tech kits for our team, but they are not working very well, is there any way you would be able to make a flight review of that kit? Specifically division B. Thanks in advance!
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn Год назад
If I could give you one definitive piece of advice it would be dont buy Guru kits. But since youve got them, you're stuck with the darned things and they arent cheap. I'm working on putting something together addressing the trimming solution for the Guru planes. I've trimmed out several of the Guru planes now and have a process established. Shoot me an email at joshuawfinn@gmail.com for a written description.

At around 52:50, you mention the differential between center of lift and center of gravity and how it affects lift in the horizontal stabilizer. Could you quickly explain what this means? In another of your videos you mentioned decalage and blade pitch, could you also explain how to optimize the two? Thank you so much!

Hello Joshua , great video.. , are you planning to do any trimming video for 2024 freedom flight division b kit
@Cyph3rKat
@Cyph3rKat Год назад
What would you suggest would be a good enough wing twist to avoid trimming difficulties? Wish the stabilizer was a little more easier to adjust but I don’t want to screw up the wing twist and end up with a not turning plane.
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn Год назад
I'd say 3/8" will be fine. Any turning or lack thereof can be corrected by bending the tail fins or cracking the nose bearing slightly loose and adding or removing left thrust before regluing.

It would be interesting to compare motorstick deflection with and without the bracing. Do you think it's necessary, having built 2 examples?
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn Год назад
That would be interesting. I do think it's necessary...the rear hook being all the way back and such soft wood to allow getting the CG far enough forward means you need something to prevent deflection. This plane doesn't want downthrust, so eliminating it is critical.

Did you ever adjust the back post of the wings or did you only adjust the front
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn 7 месяцев назад
Nope, just one. You really only need to adjust one, either up or down.

Hey Josh, could you please make a tutorial for the 2024 Freedom Flights Division B Plane? Thanks! And I was wondering if your Stinger B/C makes 2 different Division B planes.
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn 11 месяцев назад
Haven't had time to do the FF kit vid yet. It's been a heck of a busy season so far. The Stinger kit includes Div B specific template for the wing and the same alternate motorstick setup as before. Both Div B and C planes fly very well and will be among the best performers this year. I've done over 3 minutes with both versions.
@par1206
@par1206 11 месяцев назад
@@joshuawfinn Just one more clarification I wanted to make, and sorry for all of the questions, but will the stinger kit make 2 complete division B planes or will it just make one B and one C. And for this season do you recommend your new stinger plane or the new FF div B one? Again, sorry for all the questions.
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn 11 месяцев назад
@@par1206 it'll build one of each, two of either, or whatever combo you wish. I'm obviously partial to the Stinger since it's my airplane. Having not built the FF plane I can't really comment on it this year. Not sold on the single dihedral wings, but Dave usually has some plan concocted that makes his setup work out.

How many winds on the rubber band did you use? Also, did you use any lubricant on the rubber band?
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn Год назад
I dont recall turns counts, but the outdoor and gymnasium footage involved launches .45-.5 in-oz, so probably 1500 turns. Rubber was lubricated before every flight using Molykote 33, as is standard.
@watermelon368
@watermelon368 Год назад
@@joshuawfinn Ok, thanks so much! One more thing - how much grease should be applied?
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn Год назад
@@watermelon368 first off, make sure any grease you use is silicone based and does not contain any solvents or petroleum products. In terms of quantity, as much as it takes to make it feel slick and greasy.

Just found this video and noticed that your trimming is very careful and noticeable, clearly very experienced! I was just wondering if you know about the Apache24 design made by Martin Chou and if so, what your thoughts on the design of the plane were. Thanks a lot!
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn 11 месяцев назад
Colin, this is the first I've seen of it. If I'm honest, I don't like the flat wing. Sure it works, but many tournaments have HVAC going and I just don't see any way that airplane will survive such conditions. Also dihedral and/or tip plates improve the wingtip efficiency, which might explain why most users of that model are only getting 90-120 second flights when they should be in the high 2 minute range under this year's rules with such beautifully build airplanes in supervised conditions. I suspect you could get a competitive airplane going from that planform, but I've already seen the other side of 3:30 from this year's Div C Stinger on less climb height than what he showed in the video, and the Stinger C is tiny compared to that airplane.

I wish I could see the rest of Martin's data on the plane. Unfortunately we lost the Hip Pocket forum in September and it does not appear to be coming back. :(

At this point, propeller and rubber is what makes the difference in the top placings.

Is freedom flight division c the same plane as division b?
@joshuawfinn

No. The Div B plane is bigger and easier to fly, but that is because Div B allows bigger boxes.

Is it ok to use plastic wrap instead of Mylar?
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn Год назад
No! Absolutely don't do that! Plastic wrap is crazy heavy. Produce bags from the grocery store (not grocery bags) are the next lightest option after mylar, but you really should learn to use the mylar as it saves a ton of weight.

Hi Mr. Finn, Im using the freedom flight kit but I noticed that my plane is flying fast and was wondering how I should trim my plane so it does not fly fast. It does climb but it is an extremely fast climb .
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn Год назад
Fast as in the airspeed is too high, or is it just getting to the ceiling too quickly?
@jowoshy2691
@jowoshy2691 Год назад
@@joshuawfinn It is getting to the ceiling too quickly.
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn Год назад
@@jowoshy2691 ok, time to start logging how much torque gets you to the ceiling, then learn to wind to max torque and back off to target torque.
@jowoshy2691
@jowoshy2691 Год назад
@@joshuawfinn Would I lose flight time doing that? I feel like less torque would have my plane be in the air for less time. Is there a solution where I could have the same torque but just not have it hit the ceiling such as moving my wing a bit back or decreasing incidence?
