A perfect day for these high school cross country runners amongst the beautiful hills of Southern California (Irvine). The reason runner No. 8527 smoked everyone (around 1/2 mile time stamp 3:23 ) is that she is (as far as I could determine using ChatGTP) the 3rd fastest California female in 2023 and #12 in the US (NXN result).
The inspiration for making this moving shot came from the opening scene of a running movie in 1981.
• Chariots of Fire (1981...
Back then, this type of shot would have required a crew of 4-6 persons on a vehicle making multiple takes. Today, we have a Mad Max e-bike to do the filming with one operator and one take:
• PoMan eBike-CAM
Song: "Running Away" by Radar with Christopher Goze
Video revised as I wanted a close up of the top 5 runners at full speed (in the first minute) in slow motion synchronized to the music.
Technical notes for those who also have the incurable affliction known as "tinker-itis":
1. Recorded in 8K30fps in 10bit Slog3 422 codecs(260 Mbps) rendered with Arri Alexa LOG emulation LUT into ProRes (205GB file size). (This is not the highest resolution for the camera as it can be as large as 500G for a 24 minute video: the limit is YT own file size limit.)
2. This video is so much sharper and colors are so much deeper compared to the normal video (around 5GB) because the file size is 40X (at 205GB) plus it was recorded in sLog3 for maximum dynamic range of around 13 stops.
3. Unfortunately I cannot do this for every video as it would be immense amount of storage (besides the working files of around 10TB for each meet).
4.Shutter speed at 1/800 sec so you can do a screen shot and it will look like a sharp photo.
5. Sony A1 with a 50mm f2.5 sony G lens set to 1/800 with variable aperture and exposed +1.3 stop over a grey card exposure.
6. Fan powered via USB to keep Sony a1 from overheating. • SONY A1 8K OVERHEATING... . I thought being on a gimbal and moving at 15 mph would keep the camera from overheating but it still did after 90 minutes. With the SD card door CLOSED, fan in 90F weather, the camera would overheat at 2.5 hours.
7. Sony Alpha 1 mounted to a Ronin RS3 Pro bolted to a homebuilt "Mad Max bike-cam"
7. Sony A1 needs to have fan blowing air into the open SD card door to ensure 8K recording longer than 1 hour;
8. Ronin RS3 Pro on "SuperStrong" setting is a must have. Ronin RS3 Pro uses GPS so that it does not lean into a turn like the Ronin-M.
9. Gimbal technology has advanced so much in that the Ronin-M from 2015 cannot match the Ronin RS3 Pro (from 2023). Ronin-M is fine on smooth pavement but not on dirt or grass.
