I'm new to your channel and so glad you popped up on my feed! Any Man is one of the most visceral depictions of SA trauma i have ever read. I'm making my way through Malazan very slowly (on Memories of Ice right now) but I enjoy the books immensly.

I felt the same way about Rage of Dragons and would like to revisit it one day. Malazan is also a part of my reading goals for 2024, along with Wheel of Time, but I’m not sure which one to tackle first. I’m leaning more towards Malazan because it’s in the Top 5 list of so many Booktubers I watch. So glad I discovered your channel. Look forward to following your Malazan journey.
I buy toooooo many out of state library card. I love it because I know they’re going to use the $$ for their community and online presence. Gotta get over not physically holding something or the urge to annotate
Best of luck for your Malazan journey. Will definitely advise reading Kharkanas after the main series. Its not just because of the publication order or just because the author advises it. There are scenes in the main series where the knowledge you have just from reading the main series, is what is needed for those scenes and intended. If you have pre read the Kharkanas trilogy, it will affect how you think about those characters, how you perceive those plot points, and so on. Also many things in Kharkanas will make more sense when you know their context from the main series. Just a suggestion. Ultimately whatever way you enjoy most. Thats most important. Just enjoy your journey.
I know I kkow. I’m reading in chronological order for Steven erikson works which isn’t recommended but it’s a prequel my brain just works this way. I have every intention of rereading the Kharkanas series. None of what I’m reading make sense but garden of the moon is the same way. I’ll probably finish forge of darkness and jump into gardens of the moon.
I love that more people want to use their libraries and spend less on books. 😊 Also, I definitely cannot wait to get into my fantasy mood again. So many series I want to start and finish
Yeaaaa. My coins matter and having a kindle has changed everything. Ebook are amazing. Are you going to read Faebound by Saara El Arifi??? Its out next week and its a fantasy romance I believe.
I really wouldn’t start malazan with forge of darkness honestly, it’s just something that works way better with context of the main series and it isn’t finished yet. It’s also way more similar to Erikson writing at the end of the botf than at the beginning so it also is a lot easier to get into it after botf as well. One of the fascinating things about kharkanas is how it directly contradicts the main 10 due to the narrator being well blind gallan who tells you at the beginning the reasons why and this makes it a lot more interesting when you know stuff that does contradict what he says and you do view it more as a poem from some mythic era like the Iliad or odyssey.
Hey. Thank so much for your comment. I do know the author doesn’t recommend reading The Kharkanas series first. For me, I’m reading it order. And will re read The Kharkanas series after reading the main 10. In the future I will re read in chronological order. I am enjoying it so far even if I’m clueless about what’s going on I know it’ll make sense on my re read
