The 2023 Suzuki V-Strom 800DE is the latest bike to enter the growing middleweight adventure market. The 776cc parallel-twin engine offers plenty of power and torque on paper, but how does it stack up in the real world where it matters? I spent a couple of weeks riding the 800DE on and off-road to see how it compares to its competition. Has Suzuki come up with a real middleweight Adventure bike contender? Let's find out.

I’ve bought one a few weeks ago, and find it really easy, but still engaging to ride. The 1 hour test ride was sublime, coming from my Vstrom 650, the torque, brakes, seating comfort and suspension and of course the quick shifter were all wonderful improvements. I managed to take a 1-year old 800DE with my L4 650 part exchanged the same day, and the few rides I’ve had have been really enjoyable. Thanks for your considerably detailed overview here! 👍

Loiked at it very hard before plumping for a nearly new dl 650xt, which came fully loaded, obviously for much less money. But. I like it a lot, and if the rumoured version with tubeless 19/17 spoked wheels ( like the 650 or 1000, i guess), it's probably my next bike. By then givi will probably be making racks to take my luggage, and i can transfer my barkbusters. It does need a mainstand though, especially as it's tubes, and chain drive in it's current format. But that is an excellent review. Ride safe, happy travels 👍

I agree with your review ... bought this bike 60kg heavier than the previous one : my back decided because much more confortable. The weight difference feels much less when riding.. To reduce the engine heat, (road use) I removed the bash guard : better ventilation And finally I found the windfield too noisy ; so on the lowest position by placing foam between the plastic of the headlight and the windshield, the noise greatly decreased... (higher positions: more foam)

Good review; always liked the Suzuki vstroms and this appears to be a good step up in usability. For off road I'd get rid of the vulnerable quickshifter and have cruise control instead for touring.

Hi Tony, sorry for the late comment. I actually can’t wait for you to ride the 8S to hear your thoughts on this compared to the Hornet. The Honda will always win on price, and in these tough times, that plays a part for most. The DE is a great bike spec wise, but again the Transalp is cheaper too. But, it doesn’t have some of the features compared to the Strom, just on price & power. Not that you need it up top. Take care & thanks for your content & work👍🙌

It's coming up soon! They are quite similar bikes overall, I must admit I think i prefer the mid range grunt of the Suzuki, but i'd really need to ride them back to back. Yep its horses for courses, i don't think anyone would be disappointed with either the 800DE or Transalp

Excellent review as you agree with everything I thought whilst riding. More fun to ride than my Transalp (oh dear). Fantastic engine, plenty of torque, brakes v good, seat a bit softer than most, dash v good, looks good in the flesh, quality v good, quickshifter is awesome (what clutch?) Looking forward to riding the RE and will probably go for that. Bike has a lot of character. Well done Suzuki.

The 800 weighs the same as my 2018 1000xt and it has spoked 19/17" setup which overall works better for road/gravel. If don't get the 21" on the 800 if your buying this bike for mainly off-road you're brought the wrong bike you'd be better off on a dr650.

It seems like a great bike and it’s proving to be popular, but the lack of cruise control is annoying, especially when the bike already is ride by wire. Suzuki should have put their IMU from their 1050de on this bike as well. No real reason not to.
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 11 месяцев назад
I guess if they add Cruise control and an IMU, the 1050DE becomes potentially less attractive. maybe its about range differentiation?
@simulacrae
@simulacrae 11 месяцев назад
@@mancavemoto perhaps, but I don't really see those bikes as competitors, they're for different buyers. It's not like I would choose a 1050 instead of the 800DE. In that case I would look at the F850GS or the 890 Adventure.
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 11 месяцев назад
Yep not necessarily a competitor, but it might tempt people looking at the more tech laden bigger bikes to go ‘down’ the range (I’m choosing that word carefully by the way) and therefore spend less money? The other way to look at it I suppose is that by adding those things is pushes the 800DE price up?

I just don’t understand what’s happening with most all motorcycle “content creators”. Is it going to always be video after video of various creator’s reviewing the same bike or “the next new bike …the next new bike” etc? It’s gotten so old and not engaging for me at all at this point. And for creators trying to keep up with the public’s attention deficit disorder isn’t even realistic endeavor at this point. It’s a numbers thing huh? Who ever cracks the motorcycle content code that makes me happy to have the bike that I have will change the way that we view ownership of these already beautiful machines, and set out to enjoy them instead of being in a perpetual state of “oh look at that new bike, I need a new bike”. I don’t care what the new bike is anymore. It’s Unsustainable.
@johnmartin7158
@johnmartin7158 11 месяцев назад
The pluses are you’ll get a good consensus of views and the opinions of various motorcycles and products. Probably like me, most people buy their bikes or vehicles on looks and appeal as not necessarily the technicals, or a combination of the two. Deficit disorder can happen after about 10-12 mins for sure. As is stated by the fort nine creator. But in this channel, you’ve got a real decent everyday bloke creating valid content that most people can relate too. And that’s the appeal for me. Cheers.

For me, I’m in the market for a middleweight like this and there is plenty of choice. I pick up lots of details about the machines that one would not have had access to in the past. It does help me know what to look for when I test ride them, and having a variety of reviewers with different riding styles, sizes and weights can be informative. So, for my purposes, I’m OK with it.
@thebigoaktree8401
@thebigoaktree8401 11 месяцев назад
@@nikoscosmosjust the way things are huh? It’s a shame that everything falls into “The best thing” category leaving very little time for contentment and enjoyment of these machines. Everything exists on a model of constant consumption. And I am just reaching my max fill line if you will. It just leaves very little room for deep appreciation of a thing that many have saved up for many many years. Shame on me if I ever get caught up in going with the flow just because it’s the norm. PS. Been a fan of Tony for a few years now. So I appreciate the bulk of the content he makes. His trip to visit the camps where his dad was a POW was an especially poignant and powerful journey that he will always have my respect for. Sadly when creators make things of depth they get very little algorithmic attention. Cheers.

Totally agree. For me it is personal. I just finished a 6,000km (4,000 mile) ride across America last week and without cruise, its impossible -- or hand fatigue on long stretches of crunching miles sucks. Ive also rode from Maimi to Thailand and Miami to Ushuaia, Argentina... 6 month trips... Those adventure riders who do long runs without cruise get my deepest regards... Not for me. But most local riders -- I agree, not needed. I have to stick with KTM, BMW or Honda for my giggles and accept a bit more weight. But one extra option which is nothing special from Suzuki would open it up to lots more people.@@mancavemoto
