On Sunday, June 11, 2023, actor Joel Grey (who originated the role of the Emcee in "Cabaret") and John Kander (composer of the classic musical) will be honored with lifetime achievement Tony Awards. "Sunday Morning" presents this special video featuring actors who have played the Emcee in the London production of "Cabaret" (Olivier Award-winner Eddie Redmayne, Callum Scott Howells, Matthew Gent, Fra Fee, Mason Alexander Park, and John McCrea), who pay tribute to Grey and Kander for their astonishing musical theater creations.

I only found out about cabaret once they performed at the Oscar’s and since I’ve gone to see it every time someone else comes in to play Sally and the Emcee

Fra Fee was absolutely brilliant in Cabaret! Went last year (I would have loved to see Eddie R. or Mason A., as Emcee). I have downloaded the album in Spotify and I know all the songs by heart! What a brilliant group of artists! What a great play! So many emotions watching this; cannot recommend enough to watch the show!

Maybe someone can help me here. I thought I saw all of the segment with Grey and Kander getting the Lifetime Achievement Awards, but then they came out a few feet, stopped, just stood there and then the presenters helped them walk off again? I thought it was bizarre. Did I miss something?

To think Bob Fosse fought against Joel starring in the film version. Fosee didn't want the film to be like the Broadway show. As Grey wrote, Fosee finally gave the studio an ultimatum. "It's either me or Joel Grey [who stays]." The studio heads replied: "OK, it's Joel Grey." When you consider that Fosse was coming off his last film, 1969's Sweet Charity, being one of the biggest flops of the last few years, it wasn't probably wise for him to act like he had the biggest clout at the time. Of course, with the Oscar, Emmy, and the Tony he won the next year, he could handle a small moment of being put in his place by the studio.

@@orbison Interesting to speculate on how the film might have turned out if Gene Kelly had directed. He had been a sort of godfather to Liza since she was born. He wanted to do it but traveling to Berlin was required, and staying with his young children had to be the priority.

Trying to show what life in Germany was like during Weimar is important. Even though Caberet is fiction it also depicts history that Nazis killers got rid of.
