The 2023 Toyota Crown Platinum ($59,990 in Canada, $52,350 in the US) is the first Crown to be sold on North American shores after a long hiatus that stretches back to the early 70’s. Powered by a hybrid AWD system called HYBRID MAX, the 2.4L turbo Platinum trim Crown is capable of an estimated 340 horsepower and 400 lb ft of torque. But don’t let the respectable power numbers fool you. The Crown aims to provide a comfortable and quiet cabin for its passengers, while also being mindful of fuel efficiency. But does it achieve this goal? And how is it to live with? Thomas and James are excited to dive into this new addition to Toyota’s lineup in North America. We hope you enjoy the episode! Thanks for watching. SUBSCRIBE!
Huge thank you to @hktaxitoronto for letting us feature his Crown!

When I was stationed in Japan I bought a J-spec 1990 Crown Royal Saloon. The rear seats were electric and would recline much like an airplane's business class seat does. It had a feature where all the vents would oscillate left to right automatically. For being a 1990, it had and still has more features than most luxury 2020+ cars do. It's sad that our Toyotas here in America are nothing like the Toyotas you find in Japan or the Hyundais in South Korea. BTW my Japanese neighbor told me that those features weere standard in Japan. I told him we had to pay extra for electric seats in the US and he laughed and asked if our cars came standard with the steering wheel.

My grampa used to drive a 1990 Crown royal saloon 3-litre supercharged. It was a squishy ride but incredibly fast on Tōge in Izu. It was made for the streets in Japan and those who are over 55 and play golf every three days or so. Grampa’s friends drove Cima and Diamante, my parents drove E-class. For the last 20 years or so to us in Asia, the Crown meant the largest rear drive and top of the range Toyota you can get. A lot of that time would share the platform with the Lexus LS sedans. Or in Hong Kong or Singapore, a diesel taxi which I think is still being sold today. This most recent one however is strange to us as the styling completely breaks with the past 20 years. Not sure what to make of it. May as well purchase a Lexus since at least is more consistent in its styling. Love the great intro. Keep up the great vids.

For what it's worth, Toyota in interviews with several automotive journalists have mentioned that the new Crown is partly aimed for those who don't want to give up the ease of access into/out of an SUV, but also don't want to be either too high up (SUV) or too low down (traditional sedan/hatchback). Basically, targeting the new family and the elderly. The Crown's higher height makes it much easier to get into/out of, while also riding a bit higher than other sedans/hatchbacks, but not as high up as the RAV4, 4Runner, Sequoia, or Land Cruiser. Straight from one of the journalism sites: "According to chief engineer Sarada, the main reason for raising the Crown’s ride height was to simplify ingress and egress-getting in and out of the car. He and Toyota recognized that the Crown’s target audience in Japan is a bit older and therefore wanted to make it so they neither have to drop down into it like in a typical sedan nor climb up into it like in a crossover. So they settled on an unusual but surprisingly comfortable ride height." Some early reviews also mentioned that it'd be easy to work in a child's safety seat and restraint system given that one's not partially climbing into the cabin (SUV) or wiggling their way in (sedan), making it potentially ideal for new families who'd later upgrade to a proper SUV when the kids are older and its time to take them out to extracurricular activities.

Gentlemen, At 9:07 you include a photo of the entire Crown lineup which made its debut this summer at Toyota Global HQ. We see an elegant sedan in grey, a good looking CUV in ruby red and my favourite, a gleaming gold Estate. There are also Japanese rumours of a very handsome Crown coupe in the works. Somehow, we were sent CrossTour Volume ii. There are so many positive attributes to this new Crown but they have to send us the BEST ones to have any chance to succeed in our market. One last thing, there is absolutely no point in increasing seat height to a more accommodating level if you are going to reduce headroom at the same time!! That's right, this premium Toyota Clown® actually has less headroom than a Camry. 🤨

There is one very famous catch-phrase that every Japanese people knows. That is "Itsuka Wa Crown." That means "One day I will definitely own Crown." So Toyota Crown is a kind of symbol, a goal for a successful man. In fact in these 60 years Crown became quite affordable, but Crown is still the ICON for all Japanese hard-working man. Cheers!

I've never clicked on a video so quickly. Finally glad to see you guys uncover the illustrious history of the Crown name. It's always been something of an all-rounder, in the same way the Panther trio has been for America and Canada, and the Ford Falcon is for Aus and NZ. Fun fact: the Hong Kong taxi replica at the beginning was at the first-ever Throttle House car meet. Though it'a not the LWB version, it's still a painstakingly accurate recreation, complete with bead covers on the front seat and a glass bottle of Vitasoy. The car is something of a cultural touchstone for homesick HKers. It's been featured in numerous news articles, and was also a prop in Pacific Rim.

Fantastic video. Toyota likes the name "Crown." One thing I noticed is the Japanese interior seemed nicer. It had no glossy areas where the US version had gloss and that two-tone treatment made the interior pop. The exterior two-tone treatment isn't my cup of tea. Straight Pipes found it entertaining around turns, but with the traction control on, not off. Overall, the sense of smoothness and refinement is this car's strength and that may woo a good amount of people into purchasing it. Also, I think the higher ride height yet still a sedan may appeal to a decent percentage of car buyers.

Average American car buyers are relatively poorer. Even the Camry in other markets can rival BMW's and Mercedes' because of its more luxurious interior.

@@hassan_codes Relatively poorer than who? Based on stats, the average American household is fairly well off compared to most parts of the EU. I just assume that the average American car buyer likes chitzy stuff - I mean you look at some of their domestic cars and they are covered with ugly chrome, sharp angles and ridiculous looking lighting systems (e.g. Cadillac) - presumably the result of market research that shows US buyers think that kind of stuff looks good.
@ACURACALABAR11
@ACURACALABAR11 Год назад
@@hassan_codes the reason Toyota can rival bmw in other markets is due to the fact bmw and benz produce lower quality interiors to be price good. In jamaica. Thanks for the informative/entertaining research! I think for Toyota, the Crown represented a dilemma. For the longest time it was seen as the "I made it" JDM luxury car for normal folk (the Century of course, being for royalty and chauffeur driven patriarchs of big industry). Up against increasing competition from luxury brands mainly from Germany, Toyota saw the need for its own luxury brand and launched Lexus as we all know. But within the JDM, this was akin to pulling the rug from under the Crown. Not surprisingly, the Crown's position as a luxury car was gradually eroded away and unlike the Land Cruiser which went back to its roots, the Crown had no where to go. To top it off, sedans were a dying breed. So to this observer, the 2023 Crown represents Toyota management's last ditch effort to save the storied brand.

From the banter to the incredible historical coverage, this was a treat. The production quality and videography just seem to be getting better and better. I do have to say, as charming as the Crown and its messy history are, it really doesn't make any sense in the North American market. Adding the luxury options to differentiate it from a Camry puts it solidly in Lexus ES price territory, but the Crown brand has no pull in America. Why would anyone get this over a Lexus ES? Frankly, the ES looks more stately and elegant, and it has a splendid sound system.

The Crown Majesta was the luxury version from 2 generation ago, there was another sporty version to go along with it, the Crown Athlete. Apparently, Toyota themselves thought it was confusing and replace both of them with the Crown RS, which was the last generation before this Crown "Crossover".
