The Toyota dealership near me had the gall to ask $52,000 for a GR Corolla while it sat next to a $58,000 GR Supra.

Its hard to understate the hubris of dealers selling these, nearly $70,000 out the door. They even have the gall to put markup on the 86 when the Subaru dealerships basically never do it.

Ya know, back in my heyday, the Ford Focus RS was supposed to be the bastion of affordable attainable enthusiast hot hatches. The hype was there, it was all prepped for launch and market domination…. And then the dealers stepped in..

The new BRZ/GR86's are plenty practical, just for two people. I've had two mountain bikes on a tow hook mounted carrier, a four person tent on the roof and a weeks worth of food, water and clothes packed into my '22 for camping and it's been rock solid. It wasn't some off road adventure, but I'd like to see a bone stock Corolla try off-roading and get better results. No roof panel warping under load, the bike carrier didn't feel janky. 28mpg even with all the crap on it. It's the perfect daily driver for apartment dwelling millennials that have no hope of affording a house before 45..

The greedy dealers have ruined it for us.

it's so frustrating. i built one on the website and it came out to $37k, looked at actual dealer prices and not a single one below $50k

I saw signs of Toyota starting to lose their minds when they came out with a TRD Camry which makes about as much sense as a Corvette with a trailer hitch but I like this GR Corolla. It reminds of our old 1985 Celica GTS hatchback that had 4 cylinders and 5 speeds and those pop up headlights.

Y'know I've only taken on Philosophy class (Ethics), and the most use I've gotten out of it is being able to follow what Mr. Regular is saying when he starts going off.

Thank you for repeating what me and the only other guy in my corolla GR marketing focus group of car enthusiasts years ago. It doesn’t matter if it’s a 3 cylinder or less than 2liters of displacement, if it performs, if it is fast, it’s good! Everyone else in my Focus group was too, hung up on it not being a V-8 or V6 or having more than 3.8 L of displacement for whatever reason they didn’t care that it could be fast they just wanted to make sure it suited their ego on paper.

Someone needs to help get Mr.Regular to review an LFA. Imagine the underwear situation.

As a member of the proletariat, I'm bummed this is out of reach. It's a far cry from the golden days of cheapo econo S-box with a sporty model that basically everyone can get but nobody wants. Now, everyone wants it, but nobody can get it.

"it's 309 when you wanted 476" is such a local nod, I love it LMAO. That being said I have a 2011 Subaru Outback 3.6R - I'm getting some work done to it but by mid-end summer it may be ready for a shooting if its a regular enough car for you.

What I've noticed about Toyota is they provide a GREAT value if you buy the boring base or mid-level trim. Mom bought one of the first 2019 Rav4's to hit the street in late 2018(new body style that year). Paid $30,000 out the door with taxes and everything for an XLE which had heated cloth seats, sunroof, power hatch and a few other options. I was there to help her shop and the upper trim levels fully decked out were $6000 more, for what, leather seats and AWD??? Not to mention the more expensive hybrid Rav4 and plug in variant which cost even more. This Corolla GR plays to the same folly because of stupid dealer markups and Toyota not flooding the market with them. In theory you really do get A LOT more for the extra $13,000 in "MSRP", comparing a base Corolla to the GR version. Its like going from a base Impreza to a WRX STI.

Most of the fun in my NB MX-5 happens above 4900 rpm. Also huge props for the DUNE reference! Also love that Toyota is making real cars again.

Honestly, I love the look. Slightly aggressive, mostly unassuming, with a little bit of emphasis on the fenders. It’s a sleeper. Perfect.

For those who can't afford a Corolla GR, look into a JDM Only Toyota Caldina GT. Think AWD Toyota Matrix with a 3S-GTE.

I tried for a year to put money down at two different local dealerships to get one of these. Neither would let me put money down. "We dont know when we are getting one" or "the service managers best friend has money down on the only one we are getting this year" Got sick of the run around and went and got a 5.0 instead. not disappointed in my purchase..

you know what i love of this thing? the rims aren't stupid big with stupid thin tyres just because. It's like, yup, we're doing it but we're being serious about this thing being a Corolla.

One of the few sports cars you can buy new these days that has both a manual transmission and all-wheel-drive and also a turbocharged engine. Very few of those, these days.

It's larger than most 3 cylinders but the cylinders are not really that big. It would equal out to a 2.1l 4 cylinder. I don't feel like that is what keeps it from pulling more at the top or revving higher, it's just modern factory car tuning.

Subaru stopped making the STI....so Toyota stepped in to fill the gap. And boy did they. If Mr.T can get their dealers to not mark it up so high, then this will be the most popular car of this decade.

tbh I agree, I like this and the Yaris GR more than the (new) 86 and Supra GR. I'd have loved a straight 4 yes (hell even a straight 5 lol), but at least the 1.6T inline 3 seems to be good enough for hitting the apex while going to the 9-5 or the groseries.

That idea that should be the AE86 successor is so true and revealing. Corolla, hatchback, Sporting are better suited than RWD (though not solid axle) and two-door.

I had Factor and it was pretty good! The food was fresh and you can tell they just cooked it before shipping. For a single person or a household of two, it’s a very economical option.

I wish the screens in these new cars were retractable. They always seem like an afterthought slapped onto the dash and something that will come loose and fall off at some point from an aggressive button pushing episode.

When we look back at the history of the early 21st century enthusiast car, we will see with clarity that it was the dealership that killed them. They don't sell because people can't buy them when the middle man feels his wallet's not full enough. So manufacurers rarely make them anymore. I'm so glad Toyota is at least trying. A little about a lot: I love the fact that RCR exposes me to cars that I will never drive. much less own, at my time in life and financial obligations a "new" car will never happen again... Japanise cars were never in my wheelhouse so, again, it's nice to get the exposure... My John Deere lawn tractor has a Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel; great engine... Romance Repo actually sounds like a good business model. It could work... Mr. Regular is my go to for the AP English courses I never took at the college I never went to, but I appreciate immensely...I dig the free philosophy discourse also... At my age I'm glad I will probably experiance the ICE for the rest of my life, electric is cool, but not Tri-Power 389 Pontiac in a 63 2+2 kool, or small displacement turbo kool... RCR rocks.

was in the market recently for the first car I could buy with money I earned on my own. my 90s enthusiast shitbox was melting faster than I could fix it. There is no alternative to the GR Corolla but it did not make sense as a daily driver here in Socal. not only is it way more expensive than a Corolla Hybrid or a Civic, it isn’t as economical or even more practical. Feels like I was born too late in this car market

5 cylinders offer a very similar feeling. They're not great at top end, they sound awesome and they feel and sound like v10s (I did mention they sounded good lol)

not usually one to rain on things, but nah, you're wrong about the ZC/ZN6 platform. The 86 FR-S etc., wouldn't have existed without Toyota, the FA was developed to Toyota's satisfaction from the FB and had Toyota's proprietary tech in the top, and Subaru wasn't even interested in its development until a mule was built to prove the concept. It's not a Subaru on Subaru's terms, not one little bit. (you won't hear me arguing about it not being a hatch, though. Should have been.)

great car. Good luck buying one at anything close to MSRP though. I wanted to buy one this past summer. I had cash in hand, no financing needed. There were waitlists requiring nonrefundable down payments and absolutely insane markups. Got a used STI instead and had enough money left over for some nice upgrades and the inevitable EJ woes. As you said, dealers gonna deal. But I'm not going to deal with them.
