You put together a great video here. I really appreciate that you gave a really helpful summary at the end instead of saying "well they're all great, it depends on your budget." Thank you for putting this together
If you’re looking to commute or trail ride $200 for a carbon fork is a no-brainer. Plus the shop setting up the DS3 tubeless will also help support a much nicer ride feel. If you’re trying to get into cycling you’re way better off getting the bike for those alone, because it’s feel so much more pleasant to ride.
I just put a deposit on a black olive DS3. This will be my first brand new trek purchase, I just sold my '21 Roscoe 6 I purchased used. The DS3 has certain things on it I like which are the 27.5" wheels, hydraulic disc brakes and the 1x10 deore drivetrain. I can't wait to get it.
We bought 2 DS3 in large sizes, and the bike feels super light with the carbon fork. I just ordered some accessories ....can't wait to crush some miles. FYI - with the metallic flakes in the paint, the red looks amazing in person. Thank you for the video :)
Thank you for providing a better breakdown and explanation on what is the same and what is different! I haven't biked in about 20 years, but want to get back into daily biking as I did in the past, as well as ride the occasional fairly easy offroad trail with my kids. I was having a hard time understanding the differences using the comparison tool on the Trek website, and you broke it down perfectly so I could understand. I will be getting a DS3 as I want less gear changes, less weight, more stability, and I have a bit more of a budget. My concerns of wasting extra money has been alleviated. Lastly I will be buying from my local bike shop as I've already been by and they can order it and assemble it! Thank you again!
I used to have FX but i lost her 😢! Finally i moved on with my life (came cross some cash 😆) and it’s time to get a new bike , Again good sir thank you for the great review
I got a DS3. Thanks for the reviews that have been holding me over while I wait for it to ship. I haven't bought a new bike in a long time and I'm excited
If Trek had put a 2x drive on the front of the DS3 with a matching Deore derailleur, I'd be sold! For now I am still on the fence; I want the upgraded features of the DS3 but do not want to lose the gear selections available with the DS2 2x drivetrain. :/
@@bighes100 a 1x does not compromise much range or speed if you have a well chosen cassette ratio at the back, which this one looks to have. It’ll be pretty easy to get up the steepest hills, and unless you are bombing it down the other side you won’t need to worry about the top end. 1x are more user friendly, the shifting is easier and there is less to go wrong from a maintenance perspective. If you are just a leisure and basic fitness cyclist then 1x is a no brainer, particularly if you’ll be riding off road or on bridleways / dirt tracks, which is what this bike is more geared towards and capable of as compared to the FX models of hybrid bikes which Trek does.
@@paddyotoole2058 How can one actually find info on gear spread and speed? What is the actual difference in speeds achievable between the 1x10 vs. 2x11 set up? Thanks for your help, I'm new to this.
you could do custom work if you want to add your own. I am still rocking my 2021 Dual Sport 4 which I love and has a 12 speed derailleur with 42 tooth front gear.
Great videos, they clarified a lot of differences for me! QQ... If you had to choose between DS2 v5 and DS3 v4 (DS3 at $20 more), which one would you buy?
I was making the same comparison and I went with the Dual Sport 3 Gen 4 since it had upgraded components than the Dual Sport 2 Gen 5. I hope this helps
I just bought a DS2 Gen 5 and it's a nice bike except for the chain suck problems. Lots of times shifting from the front big sprocket to the smaller sprocket, the chain will jam in the crankset. Took it back to the shop and they tried a few things like adjustment, changed the chain and changed out the crankset. none of those had an effect. The chain would still jam. They put together another bike and the same thing happened so it's an issue with the bike it appears. they just ordered a new and better crankset for it and I'm waiting to see if it makes a difference. Trek is doing this for warranty work. The bike has been in the shop three times longer than I have owned it. I guess I should keep riding my 1982 Raleigh boat anchor as it doesn't have really any issues except comfort, weight and doesn't stop very well.
I have the same exact issue with my ds2 gen 4. Sh*t was pissing me off good luck fixing it they couldnt fix mine at all they called it cross chaining…I think they switched to 1 drivetran for that reason.. I ended up upgrading to the ds3 gen 5 and not looking back.
Thanks so much for this great video. I was having a tough time figuring out which of the Dual Sports to go with. Now, I know. I am also considering the Specialized Roll 3.0. Do you know anything about them?
GREAT VID. I JUST PURCHASED THE 23 DUAL SPORT 2 in a DARK BLUE color LOVE IT. PERFECT for me between my 22 MADONE SLR 6 and my 22 EMONDA SL6 PRO! Thanks for this video. 🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️
I just bought a small Trek Dual Sport 3 Gen 4 and I wanted to know what bike lock will mount in the limited space and a water bottle mounted to below also. Thanks. Your videos are very informative and helpful 😊
Im waiting on the DS3 Gen 5, I was gonna get an FX 3, but I want more versatility when it comes to riding different terrains. I think the DS3 with a different tire would probably be faster and more nimble than stock. I think.....
Me too! So glad I didn't buy the FX 3 last year. I think the DS 3 is the most capable acoustic hybrid that Trek makes now. Up until last year it was the fx 3 lol....don't like suspension forks for my main commuter
Well... I actually got a Marlin 6. Those are going for a good price with Trekfest. I chose that one because I'm hitting some mountain bike trails that are probably too much for the Ds3. Being liking the bike a lot so far. Although I would have loved the DS3 too, it took too long to reach my dealer.
@@TheKos2Kos I'm trying to decide between the FX3 and DS3 for commuting to work. Isn't the FX3 still better on paved roads because of the narrower tires? Or maybe the solution is to get the DS3 and swap out the tires? How are you finding your DS3?
@@LostInLeiden I am trying to decide between these two as well. However, I am not commuting. I ride on asphalt bike trails and want to ride on the C&O canal trail along the Potomac River that has unpaved trails. Not sure if the Dual Sport tires would make a huge difference since I have ridden unpaved trails with my old Specialized bike with narrower tires without any problems.
Thank you too! Suspension seatposts do help and they are a relatively cheap option, but I know that some people get annoyed by them since they may change your pedal cadence as your legs move a bit from the seat moving up and down. But if you're not trying to ride super fast it's probably ok
The gen 2 marlins are the same so the previous video works for that, and gen 3 hasn’t been released in the US yet but when they’re released I’ll make a video!
The electric version basically is the gen 5 since it has that rigid fork and similar look, so I don’t think they’ll release a new version of that anytime soon
I wish to have the grey color with the DS3. Starting from there upgrading it to make it more lightweight should not be a problem. To get something near the weight of the FX sport 6 but with half of the price.
The Gen5 dual Sport looks like a great. I wonder though, what happened with the Verve lineup? It seems Trek made a 2023 Dual Sport and FX but forgot about Verve. It seems for Verve, only the electric bike was released for 2023 but what about the non electric version? A refresh for the Verve lineup should have been released already. I wonder if there are plans for a 2023 or 2024 Verve. I think the Gen 5 dualsport should have been what the Verve was supposed to be since they now feature rigid forks. The DS3 seems interesting though as the carbon fork combined with the 27.5x2.0 tire kind of makes up for excluding the suspension fork, absorbing those bumps at the front.
Yeah I've wondered the same thing, but maybe Trek figured the Verve's were good enough as is and didn't need a refresh yet. Just speculating though. The DS3 definitely seems promising!
Which would you pick between the 2023 DS3 Gen5 or the 2023 FX 3? Both are the same price, and both have a carbon fork, so I'm wondering if the DS3 Gen5 would be a similar ride to the FX 3, albeit the DS3 Gen5 has wider tires. Would the DS3 Gen5 be that much smoother than the FX 3?
The FX 3 will be less comfortable and faster, while the DS 3 is a bit more comfortable based on the riding position and wider tires, but it’s also a bit slower because of the smaller tire size. I’d pick the FX 3 if I wanted to mainly ride on the road and go faster, but the DS 3 if I wanted to ride more off-road
I disagree with this RU-vidr's reasoning. Yes the fx 3 is faster on the road...but its not a serious difference. I'm getting the ds 3 simply because it's easier to carry gear on it. The ds 3 has similar carrying capacity features to the fx sport...like a clean head tube with tucked in cables so you hang a handlebar bag more easily. But the ds 3 also let's you put both a rear rack and a rear fender at the same time unlike the carbon frame fx sports. FX 3 has similar carrying capacity to the DS 3, but the FX 3 doesn't have the option to add the top tube frame bag like the fx sport, gen 5 ds, and checkpoint
@@TalalipopMTB, or anyone else, for 95% road use and a budget up to $1,500, and most likely my last bike since I’m 64, I want a great 5 to 10-mile flat bar bike to replace a 23-year old heavy full suspension MTB. What flat bar bike would you recommend? (My non-Trek local bike shop said a 2023 Sirrus X 4.0 on sale for $1,300, but I’m not sure of the SRAM Rear Derailleur quality). Naturally, the local Trek store said to buy the FX 3 Disc or DS 3. Any other brand or model for up to $1,500?
I’m trying to decide between this DS Gen 5 or a Marlin. I’m looking for a bike good for everything. I don’t want to have to own 2 bikes. I do 50/50 riding but hard to makeup my mind.
I think a marlin would be better if you’re riding actual mountain biking trails, but if you’re only on light gravel trails that don’t have a lot of rocks / obstacles and steep sections the DS should be just fine
Nice to see to Trek adding the clutch derailleur to the DS3, I hope that’s something they include on the European spec bikes…For me the weight differential between the models is the clincher, although I’m wondering how the 40T chain ring will perform on the flat…Will I be peddling furiously to maintain a decent speed?
Just got the DS2. Not a gear head enough to justify $1000 for the DS3. I paid $699 at the Labor Day Weekend sale. It checked all my boxes when bike shopping. For 2024 they changed to a tire that has a smooth center patch for pavement riding.
Would you pick a DS3 or FX3 now that the DS3 has got rid of the front fork suspension? There's very little difference between the two, only tire size really, right?
I'm trying to decide between the two myself. Not sure if the tires will make that much of a difference since I ride my old Specialized bike with narrower tires on unpaved trails without any problems.
I'm a mountain biker and currently ride a Trek Fuel EX 8 but am looking to add a hybrid bike to my lineup to ride on pavement and light trails for training purposes on days when I'm not actually mountain biking. I'm looking for speed! Is the DS2 noticeably faster on flat terrain than the DS3? I'm used to higher end components (Deore XT) and wonder if those on the DS2 will disappoint me or not. Also, is the Dual Sport suitable for touring? Thanks!
They do! Usually they update some parts on the bike as well but sometimes they don’t change anything besides the color. Trek is releasing some new DS3 bikes soon though, I’ll make a video on those but the new colors are pennyflake, galactic grey, and dark aquatic (dark blue).
I purchased 2 dual sport ds3 gen 5. i ride every day and wanted a backup bicycle in case one goes down for maintenance. to me the only one worth a dam is the ds3
I don't know which one to pick DS3 gen 4 or gen 5? Since gen 4 has hydraulic lockout on fork and is ~ 2 lbs heavier than gen 5. I'm assuming that ride would be similar on both bikes.
