2023 Triumph Tiger 1200 RP Plastics Removal & Garmin Zumo Wiring

This video walks through how to remove the plastics on the new (Gen 4 / US model year 2023) Triumph Tiger Rally Pro. I also show how to wire up a Garmin Zumo XT 360 LMT-S using the existing connector that powers the phone charger located under the pillion seat. My phone doesn't fit in the compartment and I never plan to use the charger, so it is useful to use that power source for something else you don't want to stay running when the bike is turned off. Unfortunately the power outlet near the handlebars is always on and will drain the batter if anything is left plugged into it when the bike is turned off.

Thanks for posting. This video was really helpful in different approaches. Happily I didn't need to remove all the plastic shown here to get a Zumo XT2 installed on my 2023 Rally Pro. By removing just the black plastic piece shown around minute 3 of this video I was able to have enough access to use a wire puller (old coat hanger with a U bent I've had my tool box for years) to pull the new XT2 wiring back to the the rear of the bike (much as done eventually here to avoid removing gas tank). I mounted the XT2 power base and snake the power line along the guide points for the main Tiger wiring on the left side of the bike. I used some spade plugs in my electrical kit and other connectors to connect into the power source for the rear accessory power plug. This setup allows me power up Zumo XT2 when bike power is turned on - as opposed to USB connector that only powers up after starting engine or being wired directly to the battery.

I was very nervous about removing so much body work on a brand new bike but went really well thanks to your video. Very much appreciated. Btw you can push the centre of the plastic rivet in to release it. Then pull it back out to refit.

Thanks for the great video. You just revealed the major weakness of the Tiger. The GPS integration seems to have been their afterthought. Not only that you do not have BMW like wheel control interface, but you took down half of the fairings to route the wire, to not only not able to place it above the TFT in the primary field of view for safety, but also to have to mount it on handlebars. That is a show stopper for me. I am carefully looking at the two bikes, aimed at adventure touring and GS has a much more adult like solution. I did what you just did on KTM and despise the short sightedness of the marketing and engineering. Great methodical explanation. Thanks.

Agreed - though there are now some mounts available to put the GPS in the center of the windscreen. I was working with what I had. I've never had any issues with the GPS on the bars before and run it the same way on my KTM. I don't really look at it all that frequently and mostly use helmet audio integration to navigate by the spoken directions. However - I also agree that the Bluetooth nav integration on the Tiger is terrible. Triumph has consistently underdelivered with its software and connectivity. Not a big deal for me since I have alternatives, but it's been a major point of complaint for riders, with many just giving up in frustration. It's effectively useless.

In my opinion if you are going to put the GPS on the bars on the new Triumph then you may as well just use the USB cable and plug it into the socket on the left. I have done that as a temporary measure while I wait patiently for the proper Evotech mount to arrive from Germany. As far as the GS solution is concerned...the Navigator option that fits the GS mou t is apparently terrible and lots of people have thrown it out and bought the Zumo instead. There are adapters to make it fit the BMW mou t. You do lose the use of the wheel but most owners don't seem to mind that at all as they say they have a better overall solution than the BMW option.

You don't need to take off all the fairings from the bike as shown in the video. I managed to sneak in the cable through available loopholes to under the seat where battery sits. It's pretty basic. For now hard wired the GPS unit to the battery. Only downside is that you have to turn off or disconnect the GPS unit when you walk away from the bike. But I will try the sumitomo connector when I get it ..(already ordered)

Thanks for the detailed video on how to remove the plastic fairings. But I managed to sneak in the wire through available loopholes to under the seat. For now hard wired it to the battery. I had similar set up on my 2019 Tiger 1200 XCA. only downside is that you have to remember to turn off or disconnect the GPS Unit when you walk away from the bike.

Appreciate the video. I was about to get ready to install my Garmin mount and was dreading having to figure out how to get everything off to route the wire and then ran across your video - perfectly on point. Made my job a whole lot easier. I ended up going with the Evotech mount which puts the Garmin just above the TFT and it worked out perfectly. Again, thanks for saving me tons of frustration trying to figure it out.

Where did you pull the power from? I have the evotech mount myself, but the Garmin cable was too short to reach by about 4 inches, when I used the under seat phone charger power source.

@@newenglandscrambler2262 It was too short for me as well, stopped about where the battery sits. I just spliced in about 12” of additional wire and then positapped into the wires for the rear din socket. I used that because it was switched and I didn’t have any of those sumitomo connectors. Doubt I’ll ever use that under seat phone charging case. But it is still there if I ever had a need to use it.

I'm waiting for the Evotech mount to come back in stock. After using this, have you found that the weight of the mount and GPS causes the screen to slide down at all while riding?

@@Inthewind24 it doesn’t cause my screen to slide down. I am using a Zumo XT and that unit is very light. The screen itself does vibrate to some extent, especially in bad road conditions which in turn, causes the gps unit to vibrate. I am considering changing to the Evotech mount for the handlebar clamp, but it isn’t in stock yet either. Plan to give it more time to see if I can tolerate the vibes in the gps, as I would much prefer to have the unit near my line of sight versus having to look down.

@@brentanderson2789 thanks for the reply. I had the evotech mount on the windscreen of my Multistrada and loved the location. But it did vibrate pretty bad. The Tiger is much smoother than that bike. I think I may try both locations like you said too.

Great help I own the GT Pro version, can’t see it being any different so this is helpful. Just as a footnote, I live about 90 miles from the Triumph’s world HQ here in the U.K. and attended a factory visit, they did a Q&A session for our group so I asked what the reasoning was for charging customers to view the online workshop manual. I mean we’ve only spent 18k on their product and would’ve thought the first three years should’ve been free, which would help the first owner fit the extras they’re probably going to want without guessing / torque specs or spending more money on subscriptions (I assume that’s what you do)? Admittedly, he did pause think about it, and said he’ll pass it up the line to management 😂, on the whole though it was an interesting place to visit. Thank you for the vid it was helpful 🇬🇧

Hi, very useful how-to. The step of removing the big plastic side has been skipped, so I am not able to understand how you did. Cannot remove the piece without removing the higher crash bars?

This helped me with my Tiger 1200 RP and Zumo XT2 install... also needed to get a couple bits off the side to mount my upper crash bars. I did it a little differently though. I routed my cable down the right side of the bike and didn't have to remove the plastic on the tank. I carefully pushed a fiberglass fish tape through and pulled the cable with that. I also took the connector off the rear seat accessory plug and connected to that with a couple spade connectors (fuse supplied by Garmin spliced in line on the positive wire of course). Even though it is a simple connection, any chance it would void the warranty if the dealer noticed it? I am going in for my 600 mile service soon and am thinking I will just unplug the Garmin and plug the accessory block back onto the accessory plug and leave the end of my Garmin cable under the phone holder... just in case.

Thanks... I'm on the west coast (US). I'm not going to take any chances and re-connect it for the service. Not getting any warnings of any kind but my motor sounds a little rattle-y at times when idling... for lack of a better description (since I got it). I have heard the T-Plane triple can have some valve noise, just not sure if what I am hearing is that. Been following the break in to a T to be on the safe side so when when they hook it up for diagnostics they can't point at me IF there is an issue (break in rpm warning activated in riding aids and all). On the off chance there is something wrong I'd rather error to the side of caution on the GPS hook up.

Yep, Triumph has made it as difficult as possible (as is typical for them) to figure out where to get their manual. It's online only and requires subscription to access (relatively cheap now, like $9 per month - it used to cost a small fortune). You can get access at triumphtechnicalinformation.com/

Quick question, I noticed your coolant level was just about the 'low' mark. Have you found that is where it seems to stay? When I got mine, the dealer had the level about midway between high and low but now its at the same level as yours. Is this Triumph normal? Very helpful video BTW.

I had to add coolant a few times before it stabilized. Apparently they ship some of the bikes half full, and then the dealer tops off. But when you run the bike, it will suck some in and the level will drop. Basically add more as needed until the coolant level in the overflow tank remains stable after a ride.

Great advice.. You're bike looks like you have mounts to fit soft panniers..?? I'm just about to order mine (in Australia) - can I ask, what are the brand of pannier mounts (and bags to go with them), that you have installed..?? TIA.

Thanks! The pannier mounts are actually Triumph OEM and designed for the Triumph aluminum panniers. But I run the bike about 50/50 off-road and don't want hard cases, so I bought the Mosko Moto 35L Backcountry panniers. They come with a mounting kit that is compatible with most OEM rack systems, and they sell adapters for the weird non-standard ones. I didn't even have to remove the upper luggage latches on the OEM frames to fit the Mosko brackets and pucks. However, I did have to add a couple spacers to fix a clearance issue with a small tab at the bottom of the frames (you can use stacked washers or just fabricate something super simple with aluminum bar stock and a drill - just need to space the puck out a few millimeters). I may do a small video about that as well when I have a free moment.

The Garmin has a weatherproof base connection system that needs to be hardwired in. There's a USB power port on the back of the unit, but it can't be used (it's blocked) when the device is in the charging cradle. Honestly I think it's a really stupid design. It's also prone to losing connection with vibration on the bars. Next unit I get will be different. It's about as indestructible as a hockey puck though, so there's that.

Bouth of them are din sockets. Front one is always active. The rear one turns on/off with the ignition

There's a bunch of similar ones on Amazon. All kind of no-name Chinese suppliers that seem to pop up and disappear overnight. I have 3 different sets from 3 different brands now because the original was no longer available. The quality on all of them has been perfectly fine though.

I know, right? Like layers of plastic. Triumph bikes are generally great quality and reliable machines, but this is my first plastic-encrusted ADV bike so I'm still getting used to it. Also, I think Triumph uses the most expensive plastic in the world based on my past experience with my Scrambler. Small molded fuse cover panel in an easily breakable place was like $240 to replace. I think they make it from powdered sapphires or something.

I could check, but not sure why it matters? The Thai manufactured bikes are the same quality standard as Hinckley. Never had any issues. They are great bikes.

All looks a bit cheap and parts can just be pulled off. The triumph not your installation. Without those crash bars and such a heavy bike those panels look like they would get damaged very easily.

Crash bars are definitely necessary. These plastics (and the radiators) would get destroyed in a crash without them.

Not sure what bikes you have had in the past but the BMW GS, Tenere 700 and Norden 901 are no different buddy. Body panels are not designed to be indestructible. It's simply not possible.

@@kerrylebel4285 they can be different. On some bikes the panels are rather flexible on others they are very flimsy and brittle. Newer bikes seem to be the latter as it makes more money for the manufacturers if new panels are bought.

Make the panels more solid and it adds cost and weight and maybe also more dangerous. Better panel breaks than you. That's why new cars crumple.
