FOOTBALL: Lausanne 28, Munford 15
The Munford Cougars won’t win the 2023 Region 8-5A championship.
The defending champs were dethroned by the Southwind Jaguars. The Cougars clearly won’t be unbeaten after going unblemished in 2022. The Lausanne Lynx tacked on Munford’s second loss of the 2023 season Friday night with a 28-15 victory in the Munford Football Stadium.
Despite those setbacks this season, Munford Head Coach Slade Calhoun felt his team left the field after the Lausanne contest in a better position for November 2023.
“I had some people and parents I am close to say, ‘Coach we went 10-0, but the 8-2 of Springfield was stronger than our 10-0,’” Calhoun said. “I felt Henry County’s 8-2 was stronger than our 10-0 because those guys played Beech and Brentwood. When you play those powerhouses, you can tell it's a different style of game.
“I feel like Lausanne is well-coached and they’re going to always have a huge, physical offensive line,” he continued. “I could have scheduled a win. I could have called some team down here and given them $2,500 and we could come out here and beat them 60-0. But what would we have learned? What would we have learned about ourselves.”
Munford (7-2) started its lesson with a punt to the Lynx in the first quarter. Lausanne’s first offensive possession resulted in a clock-eating drive. Lynx quarterback TJ Jenkins executed a keeper from 5 yards out for the touchdown to make it 7-0 with 4:55 remaining in the opening period.
At the four-minute and 23-second mark of the second quarter the Lynx went ahead 14-0 when running back CJ Lowe followed the blocking of linemen like Luke Work to the end zone. Lowe’s 6-yard run put Lausanne up two scores.
Munford fought back with a late first half rally starting with a Jordan Bell to Bricen Turnage 40-yard TD pass.
