I did a video about two years ago and I talk to how to test and format SAS drives and the needed cable set you needed to make it work. Today 2023 there is a newer and better cable set that will connect up to four SAS drives at once and uses a SAS connector to a (yes you need one of these as well...) to your HBA or RAID controller. It is much nicer then using the old SATA/SAS bridge cable or the edge connector that I once again refer to in this video as well. So no need to look up the old video for I cover both in this one... Enjoy and like if it helps you any.

Oh I commented too soon on the last video lol. I can already see this one is answering my question 👍 Thank you

Thanks for making this video. Just to understand, does this mean when you use the previous SAS/sata connector cable you are halving the bandwidth to 6bbps as opposed to using this cable which is SAS to SAS providing 12Gbps?
@leadiususa7394
@leadiususa7394 12 дней назад
Correct, the cable ratting is key but you have to have a 12GB controller and a 12GB drive for this to work

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much for making this video. I will be looking into the drive formats after I get the HBA (ordering now) But the more I read into RAID controllers and HBA's, the more I seen exp'd users interchanging terms and not explaining it from a newcomer's POV. I do have another possible suggestion for a future video too (and I know I am not alone in trying to find ideas) -- Could you give us some ideas what we could use our servers for? I see racks like yours and Im thinking, "How does he find things to use all that?". I spun up some VM's to make 2 Piholes (backup and primary), a VM for Home Assistant to link some local lights n whatnot... and I'm getting into TruNAS (that's my next video I am watching)... but I am having a hard time finding ideas to justify my multiple servers running. I finally have the power to run things and I'm not quite sure what to do w/ it all lol. So I think it'd be helpful for many of us.

@@leadiususa7394 - Ill keep an eye out for them 👍 Ive become a bit more accustomed to HBA's now but I did def learn the hard way lol. Just dove right in. Seems a lot of the probs I ran into was involving drives that were write protected or offline, and I'd have to use diskpart to online them or clear attributes. But Im always up for learning so Im looking fwd to the new ones. I also have to learn more about SFP+ ports. I tried connecting 2 of my switches (HP branded under Aruba in the UI and Aruba Instant On) w/ a passive DAC cable and although the HP one sees w/o a prob the Aruba does not and it begins flashing a heartbeat light as amber, and Im not sure if it's just the wrong nm light size/standard, or if the Aruba does not like SFP over copper or what. I want to get some 10G networking going in my home setup but my R720's NICs are 10G Ethernet. So Im gonna needa one of those Ethernet to SFP+ adapters but theyre like 50-60$ each. Plus then I will need to mix in a fiber solution between switches and now since those did not work w/ the DAC cable, Idk if Im gonna need a diff switch to connect the fiber to. If you have any insight you'd like to give on this subject, Im sure many of us would be very interested. Fiber standards are confusing to jump into.

i bought a 3.5 inch, 10TB drive for my pc second hand, and did not read the description carefully enough.. It is a SAS drive not SATA. I just want the drive to work on my PC. Can anyone reccommend a controlller card and which cables i will need, to install it in my desktop PC. I am on a very limited budget, so I don't need anything powerful or something that will run a lot of drives, I just want it to work

I noticed in the video, that you did not say anything about what to do with the power cable section also why do you need to buy the cable with the power cable included? You also did not mention if the card requires a firmware upgrade or how to test the card.

I talk to RAID and HBA controllers in my other video (sorry) but this video was focus on the connection support cabling for you have to get it right for the hook up to work correctly. Please check out my other video on the other SAS related topics for I cover almost all of it now. If you don't see what you are looking for then let me know and I can make one on that topic.

I'd like to convert 520b to 512b on the cheap to then make them able to work with a basic PC following, I'll be converting 10 drives(20tb total). I mainly want to do this because EMC will be a hair more EMP resistance and will be even another layer in a Faraday Cage scenario. I have about 14 TB to protect from the Sun/Nuke EMP but want it easy to connect to a cheap common PC I'll protect as well. I appreciate the knowledge your tinkering amounts to and would love some part numbers, as to other videos, I prefer ASUS/MSi boards too have for decades like your experiments. :)

I recently acquired 8 HGST 6tb SAS drives that I would like to use in my new HTPC build. Can I use this card and that fan out cable to set up a JBOD on a standard consumer PC setup? You mentioned this method for diagnostics, I’d like to use mine for tons of blu-ray storage.

you didnt show the card's connector, only the back of the card, but we all know what the SAS (4CH) connector looks like on the cards??, you didnt state the ebay type so we can find it easily, Im in thaialnd NO EBAY here (yet) I guess that would have been helpful as I am a serverware newbie, I made a video as my problem is the SAS (all identical) drives show up in SG_FORMAT etc BUT they don't run up their motors when I issue a format/read/size any command they return "drive not ready" error - but the drives I am sure are ok, (I did format one for ProxMox) so I am doing what you suggest and get another card and that cable, into a PC and run some other software thanks for showing the multiway saves me canniballising an old server chassis

Yea, I do these video is a format that you will know what and how you want toconnect your SAS drive up using either a bridge edge connector or a SATA to SAS 4CH internal cable with SAS power connections but there are four different types ranging from standard to OEM like HP so I defer to you to ID you controller tp cable to type of drive. Now a days I do cheat and use a four drive bay cage that I took the back off so the back end of th drives were exposed and use the my 4CH cable to the LSI HBA controller and jsut use the single power connection to pwoer all four. You do have to have the SAS power connector to correctly power up the drive but that comes with this cable set I was talking about. Here is the link to it. www.ebay.com/itm/284618234227 Sorry if I show something clear. Hope this helps you some.

@@leadiususa7394 no its fine (i got the set same as you coming from Lazada in Thailand where i live) im an electronics engineer so if i get a four connector cable I will wire them in parallel but at the moment I'll use your idea and get the thing (LSI card and 1 SAS drive ) on my PC talking to it then I can try things in a better way than stuff sitting in the server chassis The SATA drive commands are a subset of SCSI so I think if I have a SAS raid controller in the PC I may have a better chance of sending the drives a "forget the not ready shit" and get them to "spin up" then I can format them fingers crossed I'm glad i bought a cheap old bunch of servers with faults as curing them has really made me better schooled in the black arts of server maint/ProxMox....:-)

Sure well you need to get the following parts First get a fully SAS/power hook up cableings. This one cable set supports up to four SAS drives: www.ebay.com/itm/284618234227 Next you want a SAS HBA or RAID controller card with one to two SAS internal connections to connect the drive to using the cable set.: www.ebay.com/itm/354492178223?hash=item5289615f2f:g:Xj4AAOSwz0xhKKLR&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA8H50JGUOskx4rC6ciCW72ze4t1R66KHWZfJuYU58IsFyVxawjT6dBohgfv%2BYveXI5Gk3ip7aDn6muvKxAltQ4lCIkSI7HWxQJKpSp4rJv8jnh%2BIaoqjN61u74t2M27op49ckd1gfekl4jSOt6Dn8ab4TC7S3yP%2FkFilV5zhzDIONMATgrLpmzfOO6hxHLVTjlrPhOT%2Bm0RgbgA4cPuH%2BhqZRpyDNLXXT4PJWC3b913Sx58s7Q6nVQGWNzsBddUIcCwHi8nEirFBn%2F9NJJ7QrIgok%2Fgr1v8asYbAp8KXR7pJD%2BM7Se%2FWWlCSfog4odSLKvQ%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBM9OGXx49i THen lastly you need a PC with PCI-E slots to use the LSI and aUnbuntu LINUX or I use Mint. to run the testing and use my video or others to run the DIAGs you want to do. Hope this help any...

Most of the controller cards have core DIAG tools in the BIOS so the OS is not really needed but can help for advance testing using third party tools. If it fails first in the HBA or RAID controller card BIOS tools, the device is no go.
