I love that he eats these like actual people would. He looks for ways to combine things, and imagines what dudes in the field might try to do with it when they’re on the third, fifth, and seventh one - when the novelty is gone and they’re starting to pine for something to shake it up.
I know right? I'd actually like to try this one. Some of them i'm kind of like i'd pass but he still brings out the positives in even the worst MRE while being entirely factual.
Aside from the upbeat and grateful way Steve eats the MREs, his method of combining the individual snacks into something more interesting makes you appreciate that necessity is the mother of invention. I've no doubt that the millions of soldiers across the World are all thinking of their own preparation methods and combinations to boost their morale a little while on deployment.
Considering that some of the mains aren't necessarily as great as this one, it's good that the packs have the kind of variety that let's you make the best out of it.
@@dethkruzerYeah having extra components that you can use as either a snack or to mix up the mains even more than the standard variety helps a ton. It can also make a dish that you dislike better or at least more palatable.
I gotta say from a Army Vet's perspective I was impressed when you revealed a few of the tricks we do when making the MRE's "better" by adding different things to them. The peanut butter packages are always a hot commodity out in the field because of their vesatility and nutrition value. Thanks as always Steve, I have enjoyed every video of yours over the years and they always bring me back to the time when I was a fresh 19 year old pup just getting my feet wet in the middle of places I never dreamed I would ever be in.
The honey and onion pretzel nuggets are available through Snyders of Hanover, Pretzel Pete's, and through local smaller suppliers for "Country Store" outlets online and in food-producing areas. They're pretty tasty. They also have a peanut-butter filled variety that are clearly a "sometime treat" because after the first five or six, you won't want any more for a day or three. The Xylitol sweetener in the chewing gum helps prevent tooth decay by starving out the tooth decay bacteria, but ALSO it will help MOVE THAT MEAL because it's kind of a laxative.
These modern MREs are just as interesting as your reviews of older ones. Extremely interesting to see the evolution these rations go through. A very important, but often underappreciated part of the military!
I mean has always done modern ones as well. Just he tends to review rare or unique ones since he has allready done all the basic American MREs. Regardless it's allways a treat when he uploads!
Its actually pretty disgusting when you see him break open an mre from the early 90s with 10 ingredients and no preservatives that hold up better than the bs they have now. You guys are ok with being shot, so whats a little poison on top if it...
Every day is better with a new video from Steve. My buddy and I were sitting in the park. I opened a can of Coke, and said "Listen to that hiss." A guy sitting nearby turned and said "Nice!" We all had a good laugh together. Thanks for allowing us to make a new friend.
Thanks, Steve. I just got laid off last week and have been feeling sorry for myself. Then you go and drop two videos. Your positive attitude is infectious. Thanks for helping me through a tough time.
I totally know how you feel. I got laid off as well and am going to be homeless before the end of the month if some miracle doesn't happen. His videos help me "get away" for a moment. I hope things are better for you now!
Dude! So glad you've got vids up again! My son and I have watched you for years. When he was little i got him "A Tray" with the word NICE etched on it. He loved eating MREs on hikes. Glad to see you again! Keep up the good work!
Had an incredibly hard week. Really difficult and stressful stuff had got me going through it, and was almost at my wit’s end. Then I saw that Steve posted a new video and now I’m thinking things are gonna be ok. So grateful for you, Steve.
Nice to see how MREs are steadily improving over the years. This one looks pretty dang tasty. I'm very intrigued by the powdered hot sauce, too. I thought it was going to be just cayenne powder, but no. I guess it lasts longer that way, but I do miss the wee bottles. They were cute.
They actually brought the little tobasco bottles back. I was really excited when I pulled one because I always loved them too. The 2023 lineup comes with a little tobasco bottle, a packet of crushed red pepper, or this powdered hot sauce, at least based on the cases I got
@@metalmaniac1415 really they should just make the powder hot sauce standard in the Acc pack. I always carried my own black pepper and sugar packets because they refused to include it, and it sounds like they are reducing the salt now even more as well. I like my food peppered and my coffee sweet. :p
This spread of provisions is truly a feast for the senses. The main course captivates with its sheer delight, while the introduction of the new powdered hot sauce adds a touch of culinary magic that is nothing short of fantastic.
It's 4.30am here in Ireland, and I'm absolutely transfixed : Steve, your enthusiasm for your subject is remarkable, and your videos are a treat! Can I ask where you source your t-shirts? Without exception, they're classics! Keep up your brilliant work, and thanks!
@@Chris-rg6nmcooked rice rolled up in a roll carrier, the MRE of Asian armies for thousands of years. Israeli military formations have carried dried goods for at least a thousand years. I’m also fairly sure I read Roman attempts at dried carrier rations.
As a Infantry Marine that served in the 1980's thru 1993; watching your channels content takes me back in time. Thank you for your professionalism. Semper Fi Devil Dog !
Nothin like the 5 fingers of death era right? I get most of my MREs from a few friends in supply ( they send me the ones nobody wanted ) I freeze them for preservation and take em camping. The 5 fingers over a campfire is a perfect combo
I mean, the military gets far better funding than ya'll's education system no? Who am I to speak tho, we don't have school lunches up here... Parents have to pack their own
Maybe my home life was sad but I liked school lunches. Eating at home with my Mom was fake chicken in the 90s before that was popular and eating at home with my Dad/Step Mom was less pleasant then that. She denies it but once we went to my Moms for Thanksgiving and she said "look it's a tofu turkey, it jiggles!" And jiggled this disgusting log at us. Even frito pie and things at school I didn't like were better then that. I'll eat a half baked rectangle pizza slice any day of the week compared to that.
Hey Steve, this looks like one of the tastiest reviews you have ever done... Nice. I only wish they sold these in grocery stores because I would definitely stock up on this one! Thanks for the video!
If you can somehow get onto a military base (Preferably in a legal manner) they sell them in the commissary usually. They aren't cheap, but they're not crazy expensive either. as of 2019-2020 they were like, $12.50 each.
Watching Steve mixing stuff like that makes me want to experiment with food more and more. Because... well... You can create really cool things if you make a step from "how things must be done" or "must be eaten". Thanks to Ratatouille cheef and Steve. They was my best teaches that pushed me to making new and unusual food combinations. But mostly Steve ofcourse. Thank you so much, Steve!
I just realized that, components-wise, there's no significant alteration between Menu #14 when it was the Fettucine compared to Menu #14 Rice and Bean Bowl (aside from the salt being reduced and the pepper flakes in the Fettucine being replaced by the powdered hot sauce but considering we saw powdered Tapatio in the CCAR prototype, the swap does make sense as the MREs are being improved upon), but here, combining the components like the crackers and pretzel nuggets enhances the Rice and Bean Bowl from an already good entree to a really solid meal, while combining the same components with the Fettucine just barely made it palatable, it really goes to show how the quality and flavor of an entree can either ruin or enhance the meal experience.
I didn’t hear the word rancid, rad, but I did hear some of the most amazing commentary I could have expected with such a new MRE. Thank you preserving history and doing what you do. As someone with no vision your verbal no nonsense description has always fascinated me and given me an amazing picture of what’s being presented in my brain.
@@cellardoor9882 I wouldn't say it's common, but if you're sharing a FOB or something (at the very least bivouac in the immediate area), small trades happen. The Australian Army's MRE's are really good! They were the most memorable for me. Pacific Allies always had the best modern MRE's, imo.
This video is the reason why I started adding peanut butter to my chocolate drink, much to my roommate's disgust. Somehow the flat texture of the chocolate gets boosted by the peanut butter, adds more depth, and satiates your hunger a bit as well. Thanks, Steve!
I had the Spinach Fettucine MRE recently and it was actually really good. I also picked up this MRE to keep in my truck for emergencies to replace the older one, which I replace every few months. I would love it if they offered the original chocolate covered cookie bar they used to have back in the late 80's, early 90's instead of the energy bar they offer now.
@dragnridr05 , the last real army/navy store in my area was I Goldbergs, and they closed years ago. I used to be able to get B rations there ( in the early 80's). I used them when I went camping. Don't know of any other army/navy stores in the area now. (NJ)
I had this same #14 recently. It came with a chocolate First Strike bar, a mini tobasco, tortillas and cheese spread. A little different, but really good for the veggie mre
Been stocking up on MRE's when I go to the commissary (retired Army) lately. I'll keep an eye out for this one; looks pretty good. Would have never thought of putting peanut butter in the powdered drink, but, hey Steve is an authority on this, so if/when I get around to eating this particular MRE, I'll give it a try.
Well this is bizarre; Steve eating something that was packaged this year? That just seems like a thing that should be impossible because of cosmic forces beyond our understanding and yet here we are.
Hey Steve, I was wondering what got you into MRE's and rations? You have a story about the first time you opened one and were in awe? Would love to hear about it.
From a news article I found about him: The 27-year-old Lakeland, Florida resident was introduced to MREs as a child, when his uncle, a veteran, brought him a case of 1993 rations. Thomas ripped one open and ate it cold. It was love at first bite. “I was like, This is what heroes eat. This is hero food,” he said. “That's what really captivated me from the start. I used to call it ‘GI Joe food.’”
I just can not get enough of watching this guy. I fall asleep most nights watching these videos. They are super intriguing so I pay close attention but his voice is so smooth I can fall asleep to it. A true gem! But man are you brave to eat some of the stuff you do!!!!
His content still makes me feel so at ease or relaxed to this day. Feels like I'm just chilling with an old mate while he eats some questionable things. His iron will and stomach can turn what seems to be a heinous meal to a 4-5 star dish worthy of your time.
This explains sooo much! My 1st husband made breakfast for the 2 of us back in the 70s. It included eggs made with paprika, oregano, every other spice in tha cabinet, cheese, and peanut butter toast. Oh! Instant coffee. Didn't realize he was a professional chef by this standard!
@@XH1927 That would be non-vegan. Vegetarians can generally have cheese, milk, butter, and eggs though some people make the distinction of those being "Lacto-vegetarian" or "ovo-vegetarian" - if you have to make those distinctions though, I have no idea what makes a standard vegetarian any different from vegan (excluding the cult mentality). Eggs, milk, cheese, and butter are some of my favorite ingredients - I would never do vegan.
@@Your-Least-Favorite-Stranger Vegans being militant has caused the casual definitions of vegan and vegetarian to at least overlap, if not become synonymous, and you know the government isn't going to go by any definition except the most casual possible. Really, the addition of Halal and Vegetarian MREs is just PR bullshit that harms the vast majority of soldiers who want a decent meal. Just look on the secondary market, the vegetarian and Halal menus are way cheaper than the actual good ones. Also, vegetarians are only marginally less stupid than vegans, so take that as you will, stupid.
Nice review as always. Was so glad when they changed the menu, We wont be left with loads of creamy spinach fettuccine now. Next on the chopping block hopefully menu 5 & 12 🙂
I'm a big fan of your content. It's simple, it's wholesome and it gives a brief look into the daily lives of troops from around the world. I don't need a story. I don't need complexity. You're showcasing a hobby that you really enjoy and I get to enjoy it through you.
I am really glad to see this uploaded today... I actually bought 2 cases which i was hoping for this years but were 22's .... I was wondering what the mexican style rice and bean bowl would look like.. and shortly after here the video is.. very happy to hear the seal of nice approval....
There were a couple I liked,at meal time it was like a farmers market trading and trying to get your favorite MRE main,I appreciate your videos I can certainly say I don't remember any of them being savory,I love your attitude, the harder it is the better we like it,
