Canadian Pacific Steamship Princess Sophia struck Vanderbilt Reef on October 23, 1918. After spending 40 hours on the reef during a raging winter storm, she was thrown across the reef and went down on the evening of October 25, 1918. There were no witnesses to her sinking and no survivors. It was a voyage that started full of life and excitement as her passengers were heading home from the gold fields. It was also a voyage that ended in tragedy and great loss of life. Now, 106 years later, she is again full of life. She is beautiful, her bow area covered in huge white plumose anemones with critters hidden everywhere.....and every dive there is a reminder of the loss of life with horse bones, etc seen. To me, she is the most beautiful wreck in the world....even when the visibility is mediocre at best.....as it was on this day.....you can tell by the great amounts of backscatter in the photos. Enjoy!

I was just in skagway and watched a documentary on this disaster. What a tragic story.

Yes....it is quite the story.....and probably one reason the shipwreck is so special to dive.
