This is part II of my examination of ‘theories of creation’. Last Sunday (2024-09-01), I looked at the biblical version of creation. In today’s homily, I will look at some of the scientific theories. I outline the scientific method itself and then I acknowledge both its genius and its inadequacies. I look specifically at the problem of postulates - all axiomatic systems, including math, are subject to Kurt Godel’s theorems of incompleteness - neither science nor philosophy can be both consistent and complete i.e., they, like religion, are built on faith. The biggest act of faith of all is a belief that the entire cosmos came into being ex nihilo (without cause). This contradicts the most basic of all scientific principles: all effects point to a previous cause, and each cause has consequences.
