I’m no expert but could it be that prices are dropping to more realistic prices because they were overpriced in the first place ?

@davidlewins4631

@waltmcv not really, it is all about supply and demand. During the pandemic the factories all shut demand increased while supply diminished those who would have bought new then bought second hand where there were less available, so second hand prices increased. Now new are available they are decreasing. For the new market it is similar but on a component level in and just after short supply pushed up prices now supply is better they are reducing so new prices can correct themselves.

@@davidlewins4631 sorry but you are wrong, we bought a new to us in nov 21 and everywhere we looked said "thats the price, take it or leave it". and when we asked for a trade in for old van it was rock bottom. they wanted the best of both worlds, and thats a fact. i even went to 1 dealer who a friend of my wife had sold their's to, they had traded in a van with everything needed, but this dealer stripped everything off and wanted to sell used starter kits for even more profit. i think you will find a lot of people had the same issue's.

Its a tough one, dealers couldn't supply the demand during covid, and when the demand drops they then have the stock, this is a big part of why some dealers will go bust, they couldn't make the money during covid, so never really benefited hugely, but now demand has dropped they suffer too.

It seemed that new vans shot up in price after covid , more than was proportionate to the manufacturers costs. A good example is Adria , we ordered a new altea start of 2021, 18 months later the price was over £8000 more. The van we brought would have been out of our price range if we hadn’t ordered it when we did. Obviously a £8000 increase is far more than adrias manufacture and transport costs increase .

Total Sales Jargon….. Caravans are a depreciating assets which means they devalue over time, on average 20% per year for 3 years and thereafter 10% …. The caravan consumer is typically working class client who more often than not cannot afford a Camper van, because of price gouging during Covid by dealers, consumers are voting with their feet and staying away because of excessive costs of caravan parks and insurance costs. It’s basically the Law of Diminishing returns. ❤❤❤ He’s a good Del Boy 😅

The costs of caravan sites is outrageous, cost of pitch, additional persons, awning charge, pet charge, electric charge and additional car charge makes caravaning too expensive for families. Cheaper in a B&B. On top of that the inflated cost of the unit and them maintenance and repair, if your caravan is older the cost of parts is frightening, a small toilet skylight for my 2006 elddis £300 just for the part.
@roberttaylor465
@roberttaylor465 4 месяца назад
Surely the price drop over 12 months is due to the van being older, besides that the market of used vans is being saturated with vans from the result in covid purchased vans by people who weren't going abroad at the time, demand then put prices up so now there's obviously going to be a fall back to norm. As in the car trade the rise in interest rates have put people off buying, this does affect what you can charge, no one who is a experienced caravan owner is prepared to pay covid tax on top of high interest rates.

I was a caravanner for over 30 years. In my view whats happened in the caravan world. Anybody with the right car could tow a caravan. Not now over a certain weight ! You have to take a towing test ! .This has put alot of younger people of caravanning. I used to go away for a month at a time using a leisure battery, now everybody wants electric hook ups micro waves, a tele and so the list goes on. Narrow boats holidays have gone the same way. Where Caravan holidays were cheap not anymore. Young families could buy a cheap van and go away for their holidays . How times have changed...

Never never understood why people by a decaying asset when you could pay for your holidays with the interest in the bank for what you pay on these things. Guy in my village bought a 2022 Motorhome for £110k last year. As new apparently. £100k in the bank would get you £5k at least in interest. The capital is still there and not lost to depreciation. £5k per year goes a long way for trips away I would say.

Since selling our van to a dealer & the dealer making a huge profit from it, we've been looking at getting a motorhome. There's some dealers that are still over pricing & others that are open to sensible offers, indeed there's a dealer in your part of the country that's told us the market is extremely quiet & are wanting to deal with anyone ready to buy. On asking how much off an advertised £39,995 used motorhome, they've said they can reduce it to £34k. They're desperate for sales.

Great video Mark. Any market doesn't keep rising and rising, there has to be a levelling off point somewhere and this is usually preceded by a drop in prices. It will be good to get back to a normal market place but unfortunately some of us will lose money if we bought at the peak. We all accept that when you buy a new car your trade in/ resale price will be lower than you paid for it and this is really no different in the caravan market.

There is a major correction coming in the motorhome market. Eight year old motorhomes being advertised for more than what they cost new is not a normal situation. We bought a new Elddis motorhome in 2016 for £39K. New price today is over £65K which is well above the rate of inflation. A number of 2016 models of the same motorhome (now eight years old) are currently for sale on Autotrader for over £40K!!!!!

I think the Caravan industry is no different to the rest of the leisure Industry, retail motor industry or indeed everyday commodities such as food shopping. Obviously Covid has had a major impact on the supply of new Van's, Cars etc and the shortage of labour and raw materials but greed plays a big part of this! Somebody somewhere sees the problem as a way of making a quick buck by hiking up prices particularly in the used markets and as long as the public is willing to pay those inflated prices they will sell. When the public says we've had enough of this and we're not willing to pay these prices anymore the prices will drop back down again. The marketplace runs on what it thinks they can get away with charging to us the public. Take your weekly shop, I go into Sainsburys weekly and have noticed since Covid that some prices have escalated by 100% on a lot of items I buy. Has inflation really increased in that time by 100%? No it hasn't. In a nutshell, those retailers/manufacturers in any of the markets that start to go out of business rightly deserve to, they only have themselves to blame. Have you seen the cost of B&Bs lately? Pre Covid I was paying around £40 per night for a single room in a bog standard B&B, now these same people are asking for a £100 plus, pure greed!🤔☹️

In my opinion, after Covid there was a knee jerk reaction to foreign travel & people with no real idea rushed out & bought Tents, C/vans & Campers. After that its just supply & demand. The builders over produced to match the market but the market returned to its old habits. Now they will all be holding too much stock, which they have to pay for after 28 days. So with a 2K discount offered I will be puching for a 5K price slash this next month. I might not get it, but I will be pushing for it. Hope everyone else takes the same approach.

When a fully serviced pitch is £40- £50 per night and you can get a hotel or b&b for £70 per night why the heck would anyone want to drag a big aluminium box at 60mph using a third more fuel versus 70mph solo, it makes no sense. I’m an ex caravan owner. As for the motor home market🤦🏻

Caravan prices are ridiculous now. What was £30k 2 years ago is now £45k. Motorhome prices are even worse where they want you to pay £65k for a VW van which was around £40k 2 years ago. They realise the bottom is dropping out of the market with electric vehicles. How far you gonna tow a 1500 kilo caravan with a battery car?

It's difficult when the prices have taken a quick drop, but it will now level out. But you have hopefully had holidays already, if you look at going away for 1 week, you won't get much change from £3k and only have a few pics and memories. You can have as many holidays as you want, when you want.

Hi Mark, great video, agreed with 99% of what you said, but I do think we are having to adjust our pricing because people aren’t buying. I’m definitely not seeing footfall on the four court, which has effected sales, there are going to be a lot of deals on new like you said this year, I got out of new just in time. Also there seems to be a lot of people getting out of caravaning, being offered lots of stock. The motorhome market hasn’t suffered as much because the people buying those aren’t so concerned with rise in the cost of everything, and the market had been on hold due to a lack at parts for a few years, so that log jam has now been realised. Hopefully as the nights draw out it’ll stimulate the market a bit.

Great to hear 👍yes would say the same on footfall. But been a good January on sales though so fingers crossed, for the rest of the season. I'm now starting to compare figures from before Covid to get a good idea on where things are, last auction prices were very strong also. Been pleasantly surprised with the amount of first timers, due to a rubbish summer for tents. A big increase for families looking and buying again. Still funny how people think dealers were making huge profits during covid. ( If only) 👍

On our numerous travels to many motorhome dealers, many are doing nothing with us being their only customers overs many hours. We're ready to buy but with the market being so slow, we're only doing so when we find the right motorhome at the right price. We lost many many thousands on our van to a greedy dealer offering us little, but making a huge £5k profit on it. We're not going down that road again.

Unfortunately 5k isn’t a huge profit on a Motorhome when you take into consideration the risk factor, I’d say that’s the minimum they’d need to make, don’t forget the vat has to come out, cost of preparation, and all the overheads we have as dealers..

The dealers have been manipulating prices by overcharging and taking advantage of customers. However, now they claim that these dealerships are on the verge of bankruptcy. How is that possible? What happened to all the extra money they were making without offering any discounts? Whenever you asked them about it, they simply laughed at you. It's quite astonishing to see that even after reducing prices on the caravans, they are still significantly overpriced by thousands of pounds compared to their original value. Additionally, I would like to mention that the COVID-19 pandemic is over, so they can no longer use it as an excuse. Prices have dropped significantly, but dealers will struggle to sell their inventory unless they drastically reduce prices, which seems to be a challenging task for them.

Intersting Mark. I know some are going bust and I know of one big company who has had their credit lined revoked. That will hurt prices more as the administrators will sell off the vans to reclaim the debt. We are considering coming back in. Issue is people private still want same money. I am just going to offer bottom prices and see if anyone bites.

I always wondered why the U.K made caravans are not so popular in Australia The "bad to shocking" roads here would just Kill them too quickly (due the materials and designs used) as even the locally made dual axle Caravans can get badly damaged when the wet weather destroys the B roads. And all that sloped and skylight style of glazing and lack of air conditioning would be like an oven 9 months of the year here. Beautifully finished vans in the U.K though and at least half the price of what we have to pay for that size.

A couple of incoming problems for the caravan market. Lots of people with money are buying or leasing EV's ,many of which are not suitable for towing. Also last year the weather was quite wet in the UK, so many are choosing to take inexpensive holidays abroad with guaranteed hot weather

Has there been any discussion over what happens to the caravan market if the EV. push is intensified. I worked for 1 of the big site network organisations and I can see problems not only with charging on route (most of the charging bays are next to a through lane so you can't charge with the van hooked up) but also with maybe 80 to 120 vans arriving on site on a Friday night and all wanting to charge. A lot of the sites are not in places where this level of power is available.

The overseas travel industry getting back on its feet means that people are choosing overseas travel rather than buying a caravan. Also the overseas market for caravans to countries like New Zealand has been affected by the rising costs of shipping due to the unrest in the Red sea, container costs have risen significantly.

It's the same for everything. The secondhand trailer boat market has been dead for about 12 months now nothing really is selling. However bigger boats are selling fairly strongly. In my opinion its because of the interest rate rises. Generalising here but it makes the less well off poorer but the the more well off richer, hence the bottom end of the market is effected most.

Hi Mark thanks for another interesting vlog👍🏻 Interesting with the price drops, and the how the market is finally coming to settle. Do you know if there is anywhere online that we can find out the value of our caravan, something similar to we buy anycar or autorader valuation etc. It would be helpful to have trade value, private sale value and dealers value (as in purchasing through the dealer)? Thanks regards Emyr.

Do you think the price drop could be as people purchase smaller cars, I myself have gone from a skoda Octavia diesel to a fiat 500 electric. Also notice my neighbours cars have got smaller over last few years, with them going from Mondeo size cars to smaller Peugeot and Corsa sized cars, also got a neighbour that have completely given up driving as money has gotten tighter. Also have to think of the impact as governments push net zero and try to get people out of their cars and onto public transport, or at least that's the plan....

What a load of claptrap - market hasn't "crashed" as you suggest - the vans you featured in this vid are simply a year older than they were last year and as a consequence the prices have reduced !! Just the same with the used car /bike market - the price reduces as the vehicle becomes older!!
