We find a B-36 at Castle Air Museum in Atwater California. This plane is ginormous. Ridiculous huge. Ten engines. Six turning and four burning.
10,000 mile range at 50,000 feet. They built 384 of these monsters but now only four remain. It could carry any payload in the USAF and SAC inventories. They even modified one to carry a nuclear reactor. It flew 48 times. This fleet was replaced by the B-52 that is still in service today. We walk around this behemoth and remark at the details. This particular aircraft was a reconnaissance bird that carried a massive camera that had a 28 foot focal length.

I came to see this plane in 2020. I was the only person at the museum that day lol. Drove from San francisco, over the top of mount hamilton past the lick observatory and down the other side to go see it. Right after the wildfires, everything was deserted. Amazing museum. Couldn't believe the aircraft they had there mouldering out in the sun. Im from the UK originally and we have some awesome aircraft museums there, but to see a B-36, B-52, B-47, B-58, B-29, B-50, B-17s, a b-25 an SR-71, a d-20 drone, all in one place... AND an Avro Vulcan. Castle has a phenomenal collection. Wish it was indoors but I can see why that would be a bit costly with that collection...

I wish it was indoors too but imagine the cost. It would have to be moved closer to the i5 or a big city to afford it. Have you ever been to the McMinnville Museum? Always deserted because it is too far from anything. If it was next to the i5 it would be full of people. Thanks for the comment.

I have visited the one at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. It is a very impressive bomber. I also remember the James Stewart movie Strategic Air Command. The movie covers a lot for nostalgia fans. Both are worth a visit and watching. 🇺🇸👍

The Dayton Ohio one is probably in the best condition as of 2024. It was restored then straight into the hermetically controlled museum. The Jimmy Stewart movie is impressive. I wonder if it was a big hit at the time. It was one of the first colour movies.

There was one of these on display an Chanute AB, Illinois when I lived there from 1988 until it closed. I remember them towing the B-36 to the flightline where they disassembled it to put it on a train. I heard it was going to California, but this one in the video isn't it. Late one afternoon my dad and I drove out to the flightline while it was being taken apart after everyone had left for the day. I got to poke my head up inside.

This is the same airplane. Hopefully it gets restored soon as the weather is taking a toll. It might still have a bunch of the magnesium skins on it. If you stand under the main landing gear well you can look up at the underside of the top wing skin and it is rotten full of holes. Heavy corrosion.

Good job on one massive plane. The other three are at the USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio, Pima Tucson, Arizona, and the SAC Museum in Ashland, Nebraska, in case anyone was wondering. CAVU

and the 5th is in Ohio on Walter Soplata's old property s/n 42-13571 and there is a 6th being built from scratch in West Virginia. See RU-vid channel "Building a B-36" for the valiant efforts of Brian. He has build a serious piece of a B-36 in his garage.

I think the one at Pima used to be on display at the old Greater Southwest Airport. Climbed all over it as a kid. Then they built DFW and moved the aircraft to Carswell AFB. Saw it again there, it was in bad shape. Glad the took it to Arizona and restored it. It’ll survive better in that climate.

One of these massive bombers crashed in Newfoundland in 1953. They were flying a mission to test if enemy aircraft could fly undetected into North American airspace. After crossing the Atlantic from the Canary Islands, in adverse weather conditions the plane crashed on a barren hilltop on the east coast of the island of Newfoundland. General Richard Ellsworth along with all 22 crew members were killed. Planes were sent out from The United States Air Force Base at Stephenville to search for the downed bomber, but one of them, a B29, was also lost and never found. For more information on this crash search Burgoyne's Cove B-36 crash.
