I'm not mad about Saltburn making Best Picture. I AM baffled that they did that and then ignored Barry Keoghan's performance. He's the best part of that movie, makes no sense to put it in Best Picture and then not recognize him.
They used to make really great choices before such as nominating First Cow, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, The Master, Uncut Gems, etc. for stuff but I have to say they have GREATLY regressed in the last few years where they just outright refuse to nominate anything that isn't firmly on the bubble and its a huge problem. These are not critics picks by any means and their ignorance toward indie and international films is awful to witness.
I agree. First off let me say this. I am a proud trans woman. All year I have been hyping up the best trans film, Monica, and the best lead actress performance of the year, Trace Lysette in Monica. I was so happy that Trace Lysette and the film were making a strong Oscar push, making the rounds on the news shows and daytime talk shows like The View and The Kelly Clarkson Show, heck Trace Lysette and the film even had an Academy, with Q & A, screening for members of the Academy to attend. As far as reviews go, the film and Trace Lysette got absolutely glowing paise from almost everyone who saw the film, especially critics who adored the film. That being said, as far as award shows go, outside of the Independent Spirit Awards and maybe the Oscars, it seems like, to major award nominnating bodies, the film and Trace Lysette’s groundbreaking performance is just nonexistent. Keep in mind these are the same nominnating bodies that have, in the past, easily given nominations or awards to cis actors or actresses for playing a trans woman.
@Emmathelady I agree with everything you said. This is a strong year in Lead Actress, so if the film Monica simply didn’t make the cut, that’s one thing. But I’d be willing to bet money that the large majority of voters didn’t even bother to watch the film. And that’s another indictment against them.
Here’s the crazy thing too about Barbie’s record 18 nominations: If you remove the nominations that the Oscar literally can’t nominate themselves (Comedy, Young Actor/Actress, Cast Ensemble, and a third Original Song), that’s STILL the record matching 14 nominations that EEAAO and Shape of Water got. We might literally have a Barbenheimer match-off at the Oscars this year.
I agree completely. It’s funny to see how many people are saying “well it only beat the record because of the 3 songs” when that is clearly not the case. And if you only count the Oscar eligible nominations at CC for the other 2 movies, Shape of Water got 13 and EEAAO got 12. So Barbie’s 14 Oscar-eligible nominations is still a record-breaker no matter how you look at it. At this point no one can argue this bodes extremely well for its prospects as an undeniable contender for BP at the Oscars.
@@poett8875 I’m extremely curious what the viewership for the Oscars will be next year. We already had an increase last year when blockbusters were nominated. Imagine the increase when two blockbusters are in the conversation to WIN.
I totally agree, but at the same time I think people are surprised because Editing, Supporting Actress for America Ferrera and Score were not expected so far and it was also questionable to get Cinematography (it was not in most people’s top 5)… so with all of that everyone thought it’ll get around 10 nominations at best.
Yeah, but let's get real, Barbie won't get nominated for editing, score and cinematography at th oscars. Its techs are production and costume design only.
Joe Hisaishi is a freakin' legend, it is insane that he has never been nominated for an Oscar for Best Score. They should give it to him just as a recognition of his career.
Seriously, what happened with the CCA this year? Last year their nominations were inspired, and now they're afraid to leave out people like Carey Mulligan or Jodie Foster.
18:44 Sadly no “It Never Went Away” by Jon Batiste from American Symphony. The only song from a movie that I was moved to tears, this years. Yes I agree that the song on its own misses the point, just a tiny smidge, but when heard as the credits roll, after watching the documentary “American Symphony”, you understand the the song in its full capacity and, ultimately, how love can withstand anything.
@@dariussalepetru6770 That’s what I’m thinking. But still, Wish did worse critically AND financially. It’d be cool if Nimona, Suzume, and TMNT got nominated.
Sad for Keoghan, Pike and Portman. If ever there was a cast that deserved a nom it was Saltburn this year. They were like billiard balls bouncing off each other.
Saltburn is an excellent film. I can't speak for some of the others yet, as I haven't seen everything in the list yet, but I have to stand by what I think is one of the best films of the year as totally appropriate within the Best Picture line-up.
The Critics Choice Awards need to remind themselves what they bring to the table that the other organizations don't (those left-field but deserving nods they were so great at) and stop trying to predict the Oscars. They seem to have forgotten that we love them most when they reach out and pluck the underdogs.
I'm having a vision, much like Cole's vision of the EEAAO win last year. I want you to imagine all the awards shows coming up where the whole Barbie cast is in pink, Gosling is all over the news for the Ken suits that he's wearing. The whole cast is standing on stage for the SAG awards, and America Ferara gives a speech reminiscent of her monologue to empower all the littler girls watching. Greta Gerwig walking out on stage to win director awards in an all pink suit and tie. Oscar nomination announcement morning- Barbie get's the most nominations at the academy awards of any film ever. 15 with Picture, Director, Screenplay, three acting nominations, everything below the line, including score, sound, and visual effects, and two song nominations. I think the everything is pink Barbie over nomination season is upon us. She's Greta. He's just Chris.
Guardians not being in makeup is a disgrace. That whole movie is nothing but make up and visuals. Plus Oppenheimer there were basically no visual effects. Awards are basically a joke now. But congrats to all the other nominees. Still wish spiderverse got a best picture nod.

Who would have thought Golden Globe would do what people think Critics Choice should do. Highly impressed with this year's GG nons and utterly disappointed with CC noms.
It is almost comical how we referred to “Anatomy of A Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” - two of the greatest films of the year - as “wild cards”. Meanwhile, the critics choice outright refused to even consider them as cards. Hopefully, Neon and A24 will be able to replicate what happened with “Triangle of Sadness” last year - went well with the LAFCA, lost it all come critics choice, but ultimately won at Oscar nomination morning.
@@gabrielcastaneda9700 I honestly am predicting both right now. It might as well be hubris, but I think Gerwig gets snubbed - just like Nolan for Inception - thus giving Triet the nomination. Although, I’d love to see both women get in - not because of their sex, mind you, but because both did some of my favourite films of the year - it’s highly unlikely. Meanwhile, I can’t fathom Cooper getting it. I think the branch will see he’s trying too hard and there are better contenders outside of the US-British system. Haynes would be great, but seeing as he lost nominations at the Globes and critics - both places he got in for Carol - it’s very unlikely. Payne I enjoy, but again can’t see it. He might be empowered by the critic’s nomination to get the DGA - too close to call. I think Glazer is fourth and fifth is a fight between Song, Gerwig and Triet. All could get in, but my heart says Triet, just because Anatomy is my favourite film of the year - from what I’ve seen.
@@rafaelsolimene5350 The Academy's directors branch has some bias against actors turned directors. Looking at the snubs of Ben Affleck - Argo and Bradley Cooper - A Star is Born.
Why is America Ferrara was nominated. She wasn’t even the best actress performance of Barbie… Kate McKinnon was better as the weird Barbie and so was Rachel McAdam.
It is fascinating to me how Critics Choice and Golden Globes seem to have swapped reputations ever since GG changed its voting body and what not; GG nominations have become increasingly more interesting, international, and more Film Twitter-esque, while CC has been increasingly more “general Oscar predictions” and GoldDerby-esque, with mostly American films. If you told me in GG’s dark year (2020) that people would celebrate their nominations more than CC in three years, I would have been skeptical, but here we are.
cc Has never been criticy though. It's just a placeholder name. Don't Look Up, Bohemian Rhapshody, Joker... all films that weren't critcially acclaimed got tons of nominations.
These nominations suck. Barbie overnominated, no international movies, saltburn in best movie but barely anywhere else, air in editing. What is this crap
Yea critics not nominating the boy and the heron for score isn’t that surprising after last year’s abysmal of a score win list. Imagine best score going last year to a score that didn’t even make short list for Oscar’s. Also spider verse not getting best picture nom feels like some animated films are films bs. Sad to see world of your own from wonka not hear (since I don’t think pure imagination would be able to get nominated since it’s already been in a film). As a composer I really thought the song was fantastic, well written and deserving of a spot in the nominations at the very least.
Not including a single foreign language movie in the best picture (Anatomy of a fall, Zone of interest), and Screenplay, Directing is absolutely disgusting. Especially considering that this is the same organisation that nominated and awarded Parasite (Directing) back in 2020, and Roma (Best Picture) in 2019.
They already failed by not handing Parasite their Best Picture award. They had one job. And the Bong Joon Ho Director win was a pathetic shared win with Sam Mendes.
It's only a matter of time when the Oscars nominate "Peaches" for Best Original Song and have Jack Black performing with his Bowser costume and seeing Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese sitting at their seats watching it just facepalming 😂😂
I don’t see the Oscars nominating “Peaches”. While it’s still a possibility, if any novelty song were to get nominated, it’d be “I’m Just Ken”. And even then, I’m not fully convinced that “I’m Just Ken” will get nominated over “Dance the Night”.
truly the most embarassing group that exists, most of them aren't even critics. let's call it the pundits desparately try to predict the oscars awards instead
Critics Choice are not critics, I’ve been trying to tell everyone that. Look into the membership, it’s very American average Joe and Jane. Globes are the ones who added more actual critics and international voters.
at least a year or two ago those american joes and janes still reached out for smaller and international films. So you got cool nominations to uncut gems and like Pig
I mean. Their categories are stacked but their "sixth slot" is full of irrelevant choices (Foster, Ferrara over Pike, McAdams) and sure best picture and screenplay are beyond disapponting... Guys, Bradley Cooper is taking his kid to red carpets now and selling sandwiches... The guy is desperate. That type thing of "campaigning" is dull and I hope doesn't make an impact for the mayor awards. This is a very good year in film to just go with the "better campaign" choice instead of the quality. Not very happy that it worked for Jamie Lee Curtis this 2023 still.
The best picture lineup I believe is 9/10 from your predictions way back in March for Oscar BP which is crazy. Maybe could’ve been 10/10 had Dune not been delayed.
Leo is going to get in in SAG and Bafta easily, you guys have been underestimating his performance all awards season long. He had the best performance of the year imo, Cilian Murphy too subdued, Bradley Cooper bordering on caricature.
To be honest, maybe i’m biased as a woman but i am happy to see barbie do so well, even if it is over-performing a little. I felt very emotional watching it in the theatre hahah
10 years before 'Barbie' wouldn't have been in the conversation for Best Picture. It would have get Best Costume, Best Production Design, Best Hair and Make-up and Best Song at best. It doesn't deserve Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Score, Best Cinematography, Best Editing at all.
I'm going to have a difficult time watching the videos this season if it's going to be a bunch of Saltburn bashing.😅It's my 2nd favorite of the year so far, after All of Us Strangers. I've seen it 4 times. After the first viewing, I was a little worried it might not be as much fun on repeat viewings. Since a big part of it is not knowing where it's heading. But honestly, I've enjoyed it more on repeat viewings. I'm always finding different aspects to appreciate. And it's been a lot of fun bringing people and watching them experience it for the first time. Why does a movie have to be deep to be great? The movie is a wickedly funny blast that happens to be very well done. I'm happy Critic's Choice recognized the cinematography and production design. It's easily my favorite of the year in both of those categories, and if there was any justice in the world it would be a shoo-in for those categories at the Oscars. I don't love Saltburn as much as Promising Young Woman, but Emerald Fennell has absolutely upped her filmmaking game. Barry Keoghan and Rosamund Pike should be in the awards conversation. Keoghan is brilliant and Pike is a scene-stealer. Anyway, I fail to see the issue with one awards body showing this some love. Why do they all have to nominate the same things? Saltburn is likely not getting any nominations at the Oscars. It's not their kind of movie. The Zone of Interest will be in Picture and Director there. So it's nice to see it showing up elsewhere.
I'm with you completely. EEAAO broke all those "conventional Oscar movie" standars and now is the same with Barbie and Poor Things. Why wouldn't Saltburn be an Oscar film? It doesn't make any sense. Barry (of courseeee) Pike and Alison Oliver would be a perfect combo for nominations... That said, if we have EEAAO, Barbie and Poor Things, horror films need to be a thing as well...
Supporting actress was so disappointing. There were more worthy performances than Emily Blunt or America Ferrara. Rosamund Pike and Rachel McAdams should have been there.
i’m with the oscar expert here. the critics nominating movies like color purple and saltburn over movies like may december and zone of interest isn’t a good look
How did Critics give top reviews to: All of Us Strangers, but not nominate the film, Andrew Scott, Claire Foy, Jamie Bell, or Paul Mescal? Anatomy of a Fall, but not nominate the film, Justine Triet for Director, Swann Arlaud, or Milo Machado Graner in Supporting? The Zone of Interest, but not nominate the film? Past Lives, but not nominate Teo Yoo? Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret., but do not nominate Rachel McAdams in Supporting actress? The Boy and the Heron, but not nominate the film in Best Picture or composer Joe Hisaishi in Best Score? Like they supposedly love Saltburn, but don't put in Emerald Fennell in Director, Barry Keoghan in Lead, Jacob Elordi, or Rosamund Pike?
I have been saying since barbie came out that it is the favorite to win picture. It's not the top gun maverick of this year, it's the titanic. I just saw oppenheimer for the first time and i would be shocked if it won picture, i dont even think its number two (think thats killers). I am strongly rooting for cillian murphy though. And i think nolan will get director. The thing about this year is there are so many great films so i personally would be happy with many outcomes, but i just strongly think the academy will favor barbie.
I personally disagree with the Titanic comparison, one reason being that Titanic had a very strong ending while Barbie's ending was very messy. In Variety's Actors interview, Margot Robbie said that Greta and Noah wrote the script chronologically without mapping out the structure beforehand, and you can definitely tell that's true from the way it falls apart at the end.
@@daniellepereira7255I agree with you that the script is a little messy, I meant more that it's like Titanic in that it was this huge box office and cultural phenomenon that will also win awards across the board. I also think that a script not being perfect does not disqualify it from winning awards i.e. greenbook and coda. Oscar voters really value heart, a message, and cultural importance these days.
I agree. People will be talking about BARBIE long after Oppenheimer. I saw both on the same day. I've seen BARBIE a total of 3x now, and I have no interest in watching Oppenheimer again.
It should win VFX and foreign movie at oscars, should be nominated in a lot of categories but Hollywood won’t accept that movie especially one if is not the best of 2023
I think cailey spainey will be nominated for Oscar because she won volpi cup and the Oscar does not care about who actress get nominated for all awards like GG, Critic choice , bafta and SAG.....and we can see before that Penelope Cruz , Andrea riseborough, Cynthia erivo and Andra day snub one of the award but still can get nominated for Oscar.....Oscar look acting and not based on nominated for all awards
0 Best Picture nominations for foreign language movies?? When I saw the list I thought it might be an English Language Film category I didn't know about 😂
These are good nominations but overall the Golden globes take the cake this year. CCA nominated Barbie way too much, however it’s interesting that six is the magic number. Maestro is a strong contender. I still say the best case scenario is to give killers of the flower moon best picture and Christopher Nolan for best director but will say how things go.😊
@@ClassicalMusic2002 If killers of the flower moon dominates all the critic awards in the coming weeks, and people put it on their top ten list it may have a shot at winning BP and if Nolan wins the directing award at the globes we might get 2 hollywood heavyweights in the top 2 awards, directing and picture. Remember Scorsese is a producer on kotfm and so is nolan on producing, directing and writing oppenheimer. Just saying?
Killers of the Flower Moon is just as good as the other three, Although Poor things is being released in my area on january 5th, two days before the globes, Things can happen, just saying?
The Oscar expert is correct. There’s no reason why the critics choice should be worse than the golden globes. No anatomy, zone, spiderverse, or may december???????? Brutal
Saltburn was nominated for Best Picture yet no acting nomination for atleast Barry Keoghan or Rosamund Pike is so devastating. I guess you can't win them all, I'm quite concern how Pike will make it to the Oscars for Best Supporting Actress. I hope she gets it, if she doesn't, oh well whatever I guess 🤷
No acting nomination No directing nomination No writing nomination Not even an editing nomination And yet it STILL made Best Picture??? The CC are truly this year's Globes
@@noteliassmithwell with ten picture slots and only 6 everywhere else its kinda makes sense that something that’s close to getting in other categories could get in the ten. Pike and Keoghan were probably close, likely 7th place in their categories.
These nominations were a little shocking just because I know of at least one person who is in this voting body who hated, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Poor Things and Killers of the Flower Moon and preferred a lot of the movies that were left out.
As others have said, these are just remarkably punditified. No Howerton or McAdams, no Spiderverse or Boy and the Heron in anything ATL, or even any international films in picture. Now all that being said, does this high level of uninspiration actually reduce their impact on the race? Or does it mean there's just less of a springboard for long-shot competitors to sneak their way in?
from what I understand Critics and Globes have never had an impact on the Oscar race which is why everyone is so mad at CCA this year, because they usually give love to good movies or performances that are too underappreciated to be true contenders or not as mainstream, (like Are you there god? it's me Margaret, all of us strangers, spiderverse, Fair Play, Society of the Snow, The Iron Claw, Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall, May/December to some degree and even Saltburn), but instead this year they decided to nominate the movies we all know are the most likely to get noms come Oscar morning, I believe the true precursors have always been Baftas and SAG along with all the other guilds.
@@Jose-sx4ql That's not true at all. While voter overlap is lower than the other precursors, they are still important to the race. Both offer platforms for competitors to kickstart their awards season with the first televised awards, and CCA can be indicative of what critics are pushing to get voter attention. So yes, it is a failure on the CCA's part both for the sake of rewarding underappreciated works, and for awarding critic's choices.
How so? I found some of her choices more fun and interesting than what ended up on that boring ass ballot. She had SpiderVerse as one of her choices for best picture, as well as Fantasia for best actress and Glen Howerton for supporting actor, she nominated American Fiction, The Color Purple and Wonka (while questionable is still more out of left field.) in many categories.
Rename these awards to Film Twitter Awards because they have become an embarrassment and a worse version of People's Choice Awards. That takes some doing!
With the GG and CC, Barbie having the most nominations in both of them. If it wins GG Comedy and CC over Poor Things and The Holdovers. I can see it being like Once Upon A Time In Hollywood where it won there but might not win Picture. I still think Oppenheimer is winning GG Drama and BAFTA. Curious to see if Oppenheimer or Barbie wins PGA or a tie since 2013 when 12 Years A Slave and Gravity tied there.
Do you gentleman know that Saltburn is a remake of Something for Everyone made in 1971? Same plot..Please check this out. Emerald Fennell should be ashamed of herself for not acknowledging the former, and better, movie.
