2024 DIY: How I Replaced Our Home A/C Capacitor

July 1, 2024. As Murphy's Law has it, our home air conditioner quit at the peak of summer. No cool air was blowing from the air vents. The outdoor condenser fan was spinning, but the humming noise from the compressor was noticeably absent.
More than once has this happened to my home A/C. Blower runs, but does not blow cold air. The compressor fails to start (high current draw at startup) due to a bad capacitor. My DIY fix:
1. Remove the fuse from the dedicated fuse box near the ac compressor unit.
2. Remove the panel where 2 power supply wires connect to the compressor unit.
3. Take a photo to reference where the colored wires go vis-a-vis the "pimple" on the terminal surface.
4. Remove the capacitor and order replacement on Amazon. Search same model # with same farad rating.
5. After delivery of capacitor (usually overnight), put humpty dumpty together again.
Be sure wires are on the right terminals.
6. Replace the cover/panel. Insert the fuse back in its seat and close shut the fusebox.
7. Turn on the air conditioner. Listen for the compressor humm on startup. Check that the blown air inside the house is cool.

Our repair guy fixed a leak at the refill valve and refilled system, was working fine then quit. Guy came back and found that one of the capacitor wires was out of place and shorting.
