McLaren-Mercedes' Lando Norris heads the times after Friday practice in Hungary, the Englishman looking strong on both light fuel and heavy. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were both quick for Red Bull-Honda, as was Carlos Sainz for Ferrari - and Mercedes are up there too, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. For Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, though, Friday was foreshortened by a high speed spin at Turn 4. Peter Windsor in this video looks back at the day's key elements - and compares in detail the first sector speeds of Lando and Max.

I always thought Ferrari backed the wrong guy in going for Charles Leclerc over Carlos Sainz. Yes, Leclerc could be fast, but he aways manages to somehow screw it up at the last minute grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory . Meanwhile Sainz just keeps delivering lap after lap. Maybe that is why they jumped at the chance of signing Lewis!

Max had very similar laptimes and his onboard cleared up he could move the car much more easily. This update seemed to have made the car very planted on the track. Marko said they were not running really high engine modes so it seems the update is working.

@@trance9158 Kinda makes sense though. Perez generally never is that close and Max is on his last engine. Ofc they use some old leftover engine for practice to stretch the good one for a bit longer. The simplest and most logical solution is most often right.

Just watching the way the car moved around the track compared to the other cars showed what good shape it's in. Very smooth and easy to handle. I wasn't suprised to see the good lap times. Polar opposite of how it looked in Silverstone.

I think this jumping back and forth with Bearman is messing with his F2 racing, meaning his mind is on F1. If Haas were a near front running team I could understand getting him tuned for F1, it looks like they are scrapping his F2 season, but I don't think his F2 team can be too pleased with.

It's definitely affecting him. I think it's the new F2 cars, too, they don't seem to be agreeing with him as much as the last generation. Or the Prema's at least. I've had my eye on him for years, and I have no doubt he'll do well in F1. Some of his performances last year were spectacular. So many people are hating on him because of the oversaturation in media. Same with Antonelli. Antonelli needs more time but Bearman is more than ready for F1, and it's just nice to finally have a new rookie.

He played Capriole by Adrian Berenguer after the passing of someone I can't recall about a year ago. What a magnificent morning instrumental (piano and strings and I don't normally listen to either). Check it out. Also I learned the word capriole which is a when a show horse jumps in the air and kicks its back legs out. Something like that.

A slight nuance on Max's times: First lap on softs: brake issues and early track development. ("Brakes aren't biting") Second lap on softs: on already used softs that basically lost time in sector 3 due to tyres being done.

honestly i think the same ... he's fast (same with Norris and Russel) but in F1 these days what really really counts is this: don't make mistakes. be consistent af i think people who are doing very well in that department are the best drivers: max, lewis, fernando, piastri, ... who else ... sainz, hulk (i think maybe Albon?) what i'm trying to say is that a constant 80 is better than a 100-0 result

Personally think Leclerc is entirely overrated. He makes mistakes, has off weekends so often, and chokes if anyone is pressuring him. Total choke artist! At least he's good looking

Interesting. There's probably only a tenth between them anyway. That's what's kind of boring about modern F1. There's several drivers that are within a tenth of maximum human potential at any given time. It was kinda fun when a guy like Senna could out qualify the second fastest driver in the same equipment by about a second. They don't feel like heroes anymore. Although if anyone tried to drive an F1 car for one lap, you'd feel differently even about Logan Sargent or maybe even Goatifi.

I can find many stuff that excuses Charles, but this is silly, now. He is struggling to put together a race weekend and that's not been the first time in recent times, it's not a good look to lose on such regular basis against a driver who's dropped. He can bounce back and have a great qualifying, yes, but a driver of his talent should dominate Sainz more, that's a fact, as good as he is.

Seems like Charles is one those drivers who has "go big or go home" type mentality. After the win in Monaco he clearly had a believe that maybe Ferrari can challenge Redbull for championship this year, and now we see Ferrari's pace has gone back relative to the others, he tried too hard to extract the most from the car and made quite desperate strategy calls (Canada and Britain). Basically, either challenging for the win or in the gravel/wall

Charles & Lewis are better because they push to the limit and its win or nothing beating Max is their goal, Carlos is super consistant p3-p6 average is decent but not good enough to fight for wins, even if car is slower than rivals the driver needs to push more just like Max has been doing to beat Lando & Oscar in the faster cars to win, Senna did it to Prost&Mansell as well, winning is everything otherwise lets stay at home MV33. this time it is charles fault, but to say he isn't putting it together in the last few weekends is ignorant, one race he had an engine problem, two of them ferrari fucked up with the changeable conditions, he has been great , after the monaco win he was just unlucky most of the time

Leclerc is fine. He can take risks, he is not the one fired. Sainz does not even have a drive for next year so he's got to do his best. He'll probably end up with a second tier team anyway. And Leclerc is still ahead on stats and qualies are tmrw and the race on Sunday. Time will tell. I am still convinced sainz was and is a liability for Ferrari, so good decision to let him go. No question Leclerc is quicker. The car just isn't there.

Charles is definitely quicker on average, but over 3 years, he is only about half a tenth faster than Sainz in both qualifying and race pace, that's not enough for a driver that ambition to be Ferrari n°1. If he made mistakes but was blisteringly quick, ok, but he isn't making a huge difference with Carlos, even on more technical tracks. If we remove the early 2022, let's be honest, the difference between the 2 is small. You can't afford that when your next teammate is Hamilton, a whole different beast when he is hungry.
