The reason it's being discontinued is not no so much due to poor sales (like many people have mistakenly tried to imply given that the G70 is the 2nd best seller in its segment) but rather because they need to free up assembly lines to make space for their EV production and other higher volume vehicles. Their Union in Korea will not allow them to add any more capacity, which is why they've reallocated assembly lines like the GV70 Electric & now gasoline GV70 over to Alabama. Problem is, they're also at capacity in Alabama. The Kia EV8 is the planned successor to the Stinger and it's very likely the replacement to the G70 will be based off of it. However, they've delayed production on that to 2027-2028 due to the EV chasm. 2025 as I understand it will be the last year for the current G70, so it'll be a 2-3 year hiatus before any replacement comes.
I want to clarify some of the things you said at 16:09 about your dislikes of this vehicle and it being “the least Genesis like Genesis, when it comes to luxury things”… to people viewing this that are unfamiliar with the history and current state of the G70. This vehicle, is the exact same G70 that was released in 2017, it’s 8 years old. Genesis has only done a few things to the G70, a Facelift (cosmetics only), added a few interior changes, and made some engine swaps. Nothing else. The interior design and UI of the Gauge Cluster*, Head-up Display, and Infotainment System, are what were in the first generation G80 and G90. Weirdly, Genesis never brought the full 3D Gauge Cluster to the US version of the G70 as they did in other regions. The G70 never got to see a full refresh cycle like the G80 (Hyundai Genesis sedan) and the G90 (Hyundai Equus sedan), before Genesis ultimately decided to discontinue the G70 shortly after Kia discontinued the Stinger. Back when Genesis was playing around with different ideas on what the second generation of Genesis vehicles would look like interior and exterior wise, Genesis had only three models, the G70, G80, and G90. During this time, Genesis was growing in sales overall yearly but they were still experiencing stagnant sales with some models and they were also receiving heavy criticism for their lack of SUVs and Dealerships (at the time). Instead of waiting to complete the fully refreshed G80, they made the decision to release the awkward looking 2018 G90 facelift and the slightly better looking (on brand) 2020 G70 facelift that we have today. Both facelifts, were rushed attempts at capturing more buyers with a new design to help fix poor sales here in the US (back then). We haven’t seen any “test mules” out in the wild, for a NEW fully refreshed G70 since the facelifted version hit the market, but what we have seen though, is Genesis testing the GV90 (test mule). So being that there hasn’t been any rumors coming out of South Korea regarding Genesis testing a G70 variant, this all but confirms that the G70 has been axed and currently, they’re just slapping new years on the already existing G70 inventory, until the inventory is empty. If fans of the sedan, rally together to encourage Genesis to release a real second generation of the G70, then MAYBE Genesis might reconsider updating it but I highly doubt that’ll work, as they’re currently working on “some” production versions of their concepts.
BMW is canceling a lot of their lines too, also to build EV crap, so they will be competing, just not in the same area. :-( This is the future of cars, folks, thanks to people like Joe "Huh?" Biden.
The Genesis statement you flashed on the screen skirted your question. It just said they're committed to building fun cars. Classic politician answer--appear to be answering the question without saying what the person wants to hear. Translation: They're almost certainly canceling the G70. Deal with it. If you can. (I am not happy.)
I test drove both the 4 & 6 cylinder AWD versions of this car and found the drivers position to be a little cramped. As for fun to drive, just barely. Maybe if you get the 6 cylinder top trim with the electronically controlled suspension set at it's firmest setting. When the Hyundai sales rep mocked me for asking about the RWD drive version "why would anyone want a RWD version when an AWD is available!?" I walked away and never looked back.
The G70 is AMAZING!! I can't see why they would axe it, the 1st car in a very competitive class to best EVERYTHING TLX, S4, C43, Q50, IS350, M340I, CT5, and S60 and that is no small feat. Genesis as a whole has came out the gate swinging, performance, technology, styling, luxury, reliability, and safety. And just imagine a Magma version... FUCKING M killer and in it's youth, it took Lexus, Infiniti, and Acura years to do what they're doing.
