In today's video, we go over the 1000 mile service of my 2024 Harley Davidson Road Glide, inspecting the oil and drain plugs, providing you with a how-to for changing engine, transmission, and primary oils on your 107, 114, or 117 m8. Including a rant on Harley Davidson's guidance on proper fluids for our bikes, and the age old-will this void my warranty question. Please comment down below with questions!
As always, thanks for stopping in!

The Magnunson-Moss Warranty Act 1975 prohibits manufacturers from voiding a warranty claim as long as the consumer uses recommended oils and filters and changes it at recommended intervals. I’ve been riding since 1989 and had that discussion with my local HD dealer. Back then Harley sold oil and it didn’t even list the viscosity on the label. I asked what viscosity and they told me I had to use their oil or it would ruin the engine. I explained to them I knew better. My father was a long time ASE certified mechanic and I was a mechanic of 5 years and had helped him since I was old enough to hold a wrench. He was well versed in lubrication. Back then the HD dealer said synthetic oil wouldn’t work. I use Syn3 in the engine and 80-140 in the trans (transmission needs a higher shear stable formula). I have had better luck with Drag Specialties oil in the primary over the years. It doesn’t have as much noise and finds neutral easier. I will say that the HD tech does check a lot of other things in the 1000 service. If you’re not confident in checking all these things, it is worth letting the dealer perform the 1000 mile service. Every bike I have bought I get a service manual with each one. My local dealer knows when I purchase a new bike they have to order me a service manual. It has a lot of helpful information. Great vid and you are asking the right questions to the dealer.

I was just going to write the same thing. I purchased my 2024 a couple of weeks after you from the same dealer and same salesman. I worked as a GM/Peterbilt warranty tech for 10 years, and they absolutely can not void a warranty due to performing your own service.

That alone is enough reason to never even consider buying from Harley, the way the dealers treat people is completely unacceptable. Then there is the ugly looks, terrible handling, poor reliability, insane price and the plethora of human scum that also ride Harleys.

10 oil/fluid changes on my M8. The Redline with Shockproof is Hands down the slickest, smoothest shifts. Used Syn3, Amsoil 20w50 & the trans & primary fluid, Redline 20w50. The Redline Transmission leaves a film but I’ll use that in every HD in the future.

I have an 09 CVO RG and 10 SG. I run Mobil 1 20/50 in my engine. HD Primary/Transmission Fluid in the other two holes. Been doing this for as many years as I can remember. My 98 RG ran 144,242 miles before I sold it, ran no syn 20/50 in it along with HD Trans/Primary fluid. Never changed a clutch, changed the primary chain once, never changed a comp sprocket, changed the primary side trans seal one time but never had to touch the transmission. I stick with what I feel works best for me. My CVO has 60K on it, with an SE 257 cam and V&H exhaust. Haven't touched the motor except to change the lifters because I hate SE lifters and one was starting to tick a bit on start up.

125,000 mi on my 2017 RGS. 156,000 mi on the bike before that over six years. 60,000 mi on bike before tat over three years. I use Castrol 20/50 in the engine case every 5,000 mi, 20/50 in the primary every 10,000 mi, and 80/140 trans oil (different brands over the years) every 20,000 mi I do an oil change with filter for about $35, I have never had any issues with my high mileage bikes. Been doing. It this way for the last 16 years All the $$$ I’ve saved on those expensive fluids I can use for repairs, but truth is I’ve never had to do any repairs on these bikes, so it’s $$ in my pocket.

Im the service manager at my local motorcycle shop. I can confirm that you are allowed to do your own service on your bikes. However, the manufacturers sometimes will attempt to decline a warranty because of this. I'd say it's very rare to see it. But also we dont sell harleys so it could be different. We do mostly KTM and Japanese bikes. I've only seen the manufacturer warranty get declined because the customer didn't use the recommended oils stated in the manuals.

Also from previous ownership of my first 107M8, definitely going with 4.5 qts. oil in my new 24 FLTRX. I Believe I'm going with one type fluid for all three, it's gonna be Amsoil. Thanks again, great job on this without alot of ILY hype for brands!! Thank you...

Glad I could help and thank you for the sub!! I actually looked at the Amsoil stuff which comes highly recommended. I run it in my Triumph Speed Triple 1050 and dirt bike. I was frustrated by the Amsoil Vtwin primary and transmission oil they sell and shy’d away just because it doesn’t even say what viscosity it is. It just says this is the stuff you want which really just grinds my gears (no pun intended 😅)

Always pull the derby cover first before draining the primary. Reason being is if you strip the small torx bolts on the derby cover and cant remove the cover, youll still have oil in your primary to get the bike into a dealer for service and removal of those torx bolts. They do strip easily. Just a precautionary step.

I have been riding Harley Davidson motorcycles for about 35 years. I was around when Harley Davidson said that synthetic was too slippery and then they came out with their own. The moss Magnuson act states that they can’t void your warranty for not using their products, and they recently lost a case with the federal trade commission, and admitted to violating that act. With that being said every local dealer around here, says they have seen problems with transmissions using the red line heavy shockproof. I have been using that stuff for years with absolutely no transmission issues. What’s to say that same transmission wouldn’t have went using syn 3 or their new transmission fluid? I just recently purchased the 2024 CVO road glide in copper head color. As long it is under warranty I will be using syn 3 in the engine and primary and the new 80/140 in the transmission. Just for informational purposes, they do rate gear, oil, different than engine oil and both of those are about the same viscosity.

Your belief that there is a huge swing between 20W-50 motor oil and 80W-140 it’s not as drastic as you might think. Motor oil and gear oil are measured on two different viscosity ranges. For example, an 85W gear oil has a similar viscosity as a 30W motor oil. So both the motor oil and the gear oil that you have as options will provide very similar viscosities.
@OffWeekGarage
@OffWeekGarage 3 месяца назад
You’re absolutely right. That 20w50 does not amount to an equivalent viscosity with the 80w140 though. My frustration is which is actually healthier for the transmission and primary. Not to mention additive packages to the equation..
@obsnation
@obsnation 3 месяца назад
20w50 is used by the factory to achieve the MPGs requirement by the EPA for less drivetrain drag in the trans. SYN3 in general and 20w50 in the trans benefits the factory, not the customer long term. Amsoil for all 3 holes, severe gear for trans. HD started selling heavier gear oil because of so many folks using it thru Amsoil. Many dealers stock all those Amsoil oils because it protects better than in house oils. Wrenched for Harley for 15 years. For example, 30k on an older twin cam with gen 1 cam chain tensioners that used Amsoil from day one and they looked damn near new compared to others that did not use Amsoil. Heat dissipating properties of Amsoil is unmatched.

I think I’m going to try a few different things out and see what feels best real world. I’ll try Syn 3 in all 3 holes, and the Amsoil’s the next time, or vice versa

I would guess a lot has to do with how you ride and what temperatures you usually run at. Example, stop and go traffic in July at 90 degrees outside, you want the heavier oil in the primary and transmission.

You can do either the Harley primary/trans or you can use 20W50 in your favorite flavor. There will be no large difference in wear in the trans or primary. It WILL be easier to find neutral and it WILL be quieter as far as the clunk when putting it in gear and the trans will be quieter. It’s completely up to the tech as to what goes in the trans/primary.

Great video, I use syn3 in all 3. One comment though, for best practices, break the derby cover bolts loose first to make sure they'll come out. It sucks draining the oil and then finding out one or more bolts are seized, and you can't put the oil back.
@OffWeekGarage

Good tip, but if a bolt is seized I’m getting it tf out one way or another! Lol

I changed to the new gear oil when it was being sold for my2015 Ultra. Before that the transmission was not shifting as smooth as I would have liked in the heat and that was with a gear oil the dealership had put in for me. The new oil works great.

You oil is your choice, so many options, however, I would use a K&N oil filter for a couple of reasons. Firstly so much easier to change out as its got the welded nut on the end, I find the oil filter tool can slip..hate it. Secondly the amount of filtration material within the filter on the K&N far exceeds the Harley one plus the quality used is far superior. On RU-vid somewhere is a video of a guy who desects a number of different filters and shows exactly whats inside and lets just say K&N are far superior to anything else on the market.

Either factory or my dealer put white pipe dope along with the o-ring on the engine oil drain plug on my 22 RG. I’m fine with a tiny amount of pipe dope to ensure it doesn’t leak

Like you, i do my own oil changes. When i went to my dealer and said im doing my own, he said to make sure to use Harley oil to keep it under warranty. I replied cant i use any oil as long as it matches or exceeds specifications? He said no. I then replied then why do you also sell Amsoil??😅 pindrop! I actually have been using Maxima with no issues.
