Hi folks. BRAIN FART ALERT. At 8:20 I say this will charge form 5-10% in 10 hours using home Level 2. Obviously I read it wrong. It should be 10-100%. Please contact my people for a full refund.

No worries. In some cultures only God is perfect, so adding a flaw is a rule in order to not insult God. A note on boring cars. Totally agree, however that includes car colors. It seems to me that less and less cars are not just some monochromatic white/grey/black, even dark blue is rarely seen. PS. On safety at the charge station - European here. Troubling to hear safety is so bad, supposedly it is getting better lately (despite what certain networks claim).

Tom- Just had to take a moment to say your auto reviews are absolutely fantastic! I'm constantly impressed by how thorough you are - you leave no stone unturned when it comes to a car's features and performance. But what really sets you apart is the way you weave in humor/light. It makes your reviews genuinely enjoyable - like getting the inside scoop from a car-loving friend. You've got a real knack for making even the most technical details engaging. Honestly, your reviews are the most informative (and entertaining!) ones I've come across. Keep up the incredible work, Tom! God Bless! 🙂

Great review as always Tom. Having lived with an Ioniq 5 (VERY similar charging dynamics) for 15 months, I believe there are a few points worth mentioning. Home charging makes all the difference. The time spent charging on road trips is more than regained by NEVER having to stop for fuel any other time. Just plug it in when you are home. Also, I found it more helpful to think of range in terms of time, not miles. After 2-2.5 hours I need a break from driving. So as long as I can go that far, I’m satisfied. Also, the difference between getting a charge at a max speed, and a charge at about 125, is less than 5 minutes. No big deal.
@ianberry5562
@ianberry5562 6 месяцев назад
I’ve heard the needing to stop frequently anyway argument before, but I feel like there’s a huge difference between stopping occasionally because you want to or stopping every couple hours for at minimum 15-30 minutes because you have to. I’m glad you like your vehicle but I’m someone who will pull 4-6 hour shifts behind the wheel on long trips. It would drive me crazy to take extended stops that frequently
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 6 месяцев назад
Agreed. Making those points in a video is tough to visualize.
@Bum_Hip
@Bum_Hip 6 месяцев назад
@@ianberry5562 fair enough. I’m in my mid 50’s and those stops are no longer up to me if you know what I mean. A 4 hour leg without stopping is just no longer possible… unless I dehydrate myself for a couple days. I have only had to stop for more than 20 minutes 2 times out of about 40. Most of the time the car is ready in 15 minutes or so. This Hyundai EV charging platform is really strong. But I get it, EV’s aren’t for everyone.
@volcalstone
@volcalstone 6 месяцев назад
I think if you have a family then you don't want to stop that often. The faster you get to your destination the better imo. On my prior 5.5 hours trip to visit family I would want to at least stop once to get out and use the restroom or so. This would be a good time to get some food too if needed. With others then the car with you there are things that are out of your control so at times I do stop 2-3 times or so if anything. I've done the same 5.5 hour trip without any stops before but this is really only when it's super late at night whole my family is sleeping and I'm lucky enough not to have to go to the restroom at all. I would say if I'm driving by myself it would be way different as any stop will be on my time now. If I want to stop for anything I'm not holding anyone else up from being at the destination. I'm on my own schedule and with that stopping to rest is perfectly fine. Even longer breaks to go shopping or so. Everyone situations are different. EVs are doable at this time if charging will be quick as well. If you're sticking to bigger cities or places then that would be more ideal. If you have to go out and off the path I would stick with an ICE car. For me I wasn't going to get an EV until I was able to quick charge on a car with decent range. Like someone mentioned, it's about the time traveled instead and not so much the range. Pumping gas is like a 3-5 min process if there is no line. EV charging up to 80% is a 15-18 min process again depending if there isn't a line again. If you value time more above anything else on long trips then don't get an EV. If you don't mind planning our your trips accordingly around charging stations then get an EV. Eventually there will be more EV charging stations or stalls in the future so it's only going to get better at this point. I still like ICE cars for certain things but an EV is pretty awesome imo if it works for you.

Both Ioniq 5 & 6 look great to me b/c they remind me of cars from my youth. The 5 is like a king-sized 1980's hatchback and the 6 is like a Saab 900 Turbo, even has a whale tail! Both stand out, but the 6 is the one I really favor.

Another to-the-point review that addresses the regular topics car buyers are interested in. Thank You! One question I haven't heard anyone address. I understand the utility of AWD, but here in our NW where snow is relatively rare and light, seems like a heavy RWD car would work fine. My well-balanced 328 was easy enough to drive in snow, can you offer any perspective on a RWD EVs given their much higher weight?

I almost bought one of these, but the dealer experience put me off. Don't read much about that, but I'm sure that's a reason that EV sales are slipping. Especially Ford and GM, hide-bound dealers. So bought VW ID.4, checks all the boxes for suburban living when home charging, but road trips - Electrify America is a horrible company and experience! Great review, as always.
@matthewliuliu666
@matthewliuliu666 6 месяцев назад
ID4, I hate to see id4@ electrify America station, it takes forever for them to leave, and always fucking a lot of them, if you buy those shit cars with slow charging speed, the least put a level 2 charger at home, if you can’t have a level 2 charger installed at home, buy something like this one: ioniq 5 or ioniq 6
@volcalstone
@volcalstone 6 месяцев назад
@@matthewliuliu666I see your point but you need to look at the bigger picture. We need more stalls at every EV stations instead of more stations. To me the amount of stations right now is fine for the time being. It's the amount of stalls at each station that bugs me. Every station should have at least 10-12 stalls imo in case some are down. This will provide enough stalls for people with slower charging cars and keep around 6 stalls available or for faster cars. I'm not sure who's idea it was to make an EA station for example with only 4 chargers not knowing that they are giving free charging away with every single Hyundai car for example. That's just asking for a headache waiting to happen for their customers. BTW I have an EV6 GT at this time. One of the reason why I got it was for the fast charging. Also don't even ask to put level 2 chargers at these EA stations cause people with slow cars won't even know to use them instead of the 350kW stalls. Just make them all 350kW so that there is a better chance of getting one. That's if they're not broken or charging super slow for some reason. Home charging is key people. I only use stations now if I'm on a trip or if I need to charge real quick for unplanned ones.

6:40 Tom, A suggestion: start a trend of quoting the EPA _HIGHWAY_ range rather than the mixed figure (which is mostly city driving) when reviewing EVs. Unless you drive a taxi around Manhattan all day, no one cares about “mixed” range… we only care how far it can highway roadtrip. Hopefully other journalists will hope on the trend as well.
@DrivenCarReviews

There is no EPA highway range for EVs. It's an estimated range and then the MPGe figures that are a poor way of communicating efficiency to the layperson.
@alliejr

@@DrivenCarReviews I agree MPGe is dumb. However, the EPA publishes an MPGe for city, highway and combined as well as the formula for MPGe (from which their published “combined range” is derived). Congratulations to Hyundai… as this thing is so ugly it is the first and only time I have ever been compelled to leave a comment on one of your videos in years of watching. For a pair of corporate siblings that have been knocking it out of the park design-wise from the Telluride to the Palisade to the quirky Santa Fe and the wildly popular Ioniq 5… this thing is an absolute miss. Worse yet, it somehow screams “South Korean” in the same odd way the early US bound Hyundais did; especially thinking of the original Sonata here. Just an air of cheapness from the plasticky bezel around the screens to the cheap looking blue LCD digits on the climate control.

You would have rocks in your head to buy this car over a Tesla! Kia and Hyundai are recalling ALL of their electric vehicles almost 200,000 of them due to faulty charge controllers! They can't even update the software over the air and need STEALERSHIPS to fix them. Out of warranty battery replacements are $50,000! That is a deal breaker if you get into an accident or accidental damage to the battery. Plus there are DOZENS of additional features the Tesla has over these cars including self-driving, remote monitoring of the camera, always running dashcam an phone app that actually works and tons of more.
@TinLeadHammer

So it is a recall at no cost for an owner. What's the problem? Tesla's models 3 and Y are ugly inside with almost no physical controls and with a go-cart suspension. I would consider the Y if Tesla made a proper dashboard for it, I don't like the huge TV screen bolted to a wooden plank.

Noah, do some homework. Or stop spreading falsehoods. All EV batteries in the US are warranted for at least 8 years or 100,000 against significant degradation. All EVs sold in California must have coverage that lasts 10 years or 150,000 miles. Generally, pack degradation is not an issue. Nissan Leafs had some trouble but those packs didn't have cooling systems.
@cbotten106
@cbotten106 4 месяца назад
We'd be speculating. Buy one and find out. California requires that they function for eight years (and believe me this standard would not exist without CA) , without getting into minutia that ought to do the job for the majority of use cases.

The future is electric, but personally, I'll never buy one until they aren't a disposable vehicle. Right now, they're nothing more than play toys for the rich. Minor accidents often write the vehicle off, some are seeing battery replacements after 5-7 years (which cost more to replace than just buying a new car). On top of it all, they are using our tax dollars as an incentive for people to buy them.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 6 месяцев назад
Everything I've studied says you're getting bad information. There are plenty of 10 year old Teslas running around Seattle in good pack health and precious few EVs that need battery replacements in 5-7 years (on par with cars that need new gas engines in the same time frame). I had a Volvo that got "totaled" after it was hit by a Subaru causing seemingly average damage. There are always horror stories, ICE or EV. And let's not forget the TRILLIONS of our tax dollars the petroleum companies have received over the years. I look at it as this- For once we ordinary people can get some of our tax money back. Take advantage of it dude.
@LongIslandMopars
@LongIslandMopars 6 месяцев назад
I would likely only consider Teslas since they seem to make the same products for years with incremental changes. In theory that should mean availability of parts and hopefully keep costs lower compared to the latest offerings from other automakers.

@@DrivenCarReviews there has recently been a few issues in Canada that have been on the news or other review channels. One of them was for the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. They don't operate when the temperature goes below -20C. I am guessing it is an oversight in the ECM firmware, but it's a big oversight to have hundreds of bricked $65k vehicles for a couple of weeks in the winter up here. It's likely an easy fix, I'm guessing a software update to simply run the gas engine to condition the battery pack (assuming that was the problem). The other issues have been with Hyundai EV vehicles, specifically the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq Sedan (before it). There has been a few examples where the customer ran over some mild road debris (small branch, exhaust pipe, etc) which caused the debris to bounce up under the car and hit the "belly" where the batteries are. In those examples, what looks like a benign impact, ended up writing the vehicle off (which is a scam). I think Tesla vehicles have a titanium underbelly plate to protect the battery pack, so that might be money well spent if that is going to be a weak point. I also read that tire shops in California (where there are tons of Teslas) say they often need new tires every 20,000 miles. EVs are heavy and the EV tires apparently don't last as long. EV tires are also more expensive to buy, so that's something to consider as well. You can go visit the "Motormouth" channel and search for the battery issues, if nothing more than to learn about what has happened up here. As I said, I think EVs are the future, I just don't think we are there yet in terms of infrastructure and battery technology.
@COSolar6419
@COSolar6419 6 месяцев назад
EV battery replacement at 5-7 years is extremely rare and would be covered by warranty in the unlikely event it was required. Repair ability is an issue with EVs and any new technology. Personally I am waiting for a gas powered vehicle that gets 100 mpg and I can refuel at home. Until then I’ll stick with an EV.
@TinLeadHammer
@TinLeadHammer 6 месяцев назад
You got it wrong. EVs are disposable now, with non-removable battery and no clear plan for recycling. I am hoping for a single standard quick-removable battery for ALL makes and models, which would be rented from charging stations, not purchased with a vehicle.
