I’ve owned an MY22 Sportage SX Diesel for 11 months now and the car remains fresh and durable. Performance and comfort levels are top notch with above average handling - it’s a good drivers car on the open road and very nimble around the city. The only criticism is the cruise control which wanders around the set speed, but its tolerable. I also worked out how to turn down the cabin alert beeps and turn them off quickly when needed. I got a tow bar and the diesel tows with ease and dignity. I do a lot of highway driving and regularly average around 5.5 L fuel per 100km. There is plenty of power to spare with the Diesel, it’s smooth, effortless, relatively quiet and responsive. The 8speed torque converter automatic is a perfect match, as smooth as butter. I’m extremely happy with my Sportage it’s a winner!
How effective is radar cruise control. If you keep it in auto pilot mode in heavy traffic road, does it breathe to hard and starts abruptly or is is very smooth
Because of you Paul I bought a Sportage GT line Diesel. Thank you. Have had it for 6 months and I’m blown away by it. I’ve been driving for 60 years, a Vauxhall, Holdens to many to say , a Volvo, 5 Jaguar’s, Citroen and Mercedes. Not surprised 2022 COTY.
Ordered our Gravity Grey Sportage GT Line Diesel about 2 weeks after launch in November 2021. Delivered here in Brisbane in May 2022 and have since covered around 14,500km since. Originally was sold on either the new Outlander or Outback but after test driving the Sportage diesel found it to be streets ahead of everything else driven to date. Space, technology, practicality, comfort and performance are an absolute perfect combination for us. It's ageing well, no issues to date and absolutely no regrets about buying. The competitors with their NA petrol CVT's are just a really average driving experience when compared to this. Although used mainly for a 20km semi-rural each way commute we've done a number of trips to the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Hervey Bay etc and has been absolutely perfect in every way. Happy I purchased at launch pricing though ... =) We recently returned from a trip to the UK and saw the naff looking short wheelbase. It looks cut off and awkward and doesn't flow like our long version. Good call, Kia Australia !
Thanks Paul. Love my KIA Sportage GT diesel (in the green) - delivered May 2022. Faultless vehicle. Have owned many different brands over the years, the Sportage is the nicest all-round vehicle that I have owned.
We have a Kia Sportage 2022 model. The Android Auto UI changed to full screen after a firmware update on the car from the Kia. After this update the right default section went away. Now our car has a full screen Android Auto UI.
Got the My23 sportage sx with the 2.0 petrol. Not the most powerful engine but if you're driving at the speed limit it does way more than enough. Plenty of room, enough features for the average person and rides really comfortably. Best in class when we tried them and there was one in stock so we bought it and couldn't justify the price hike to the SX+
We literally have the same model as you. Bought it last year in October. Barring the weak engine, everything is perfect. SX provides the best value for money as it has the perfect balances of features for the price.
Its not about driving at the speed limit, try overtaking a truck/caravan etc with a car full of kids and luggage/camping gear etc...terribly slow and dangerous. If you dont do this then its not an issue but for many it is, hence why they test the 80-120.
I drove a base rental base model, I think a non turbo 1.6 litre 26 valve petrol engine that ran 91 octane alcohol mix fuel. I drove to Currutha Beach, all up around 400km, and got about 8.3 litres/100. The base engine was fine around town, but on the highway, it would change down frequently going up hills. The car had a full tank, plus about 225 kg of "ballast" (my wife and myself plus luggage). I was astonished how quiet the car was, and how well it handled. I reckon bigger engines, especially the diesel, would not handle as well. I don't think overtaking is dangerous with a lack of power - it all comes down to the driver. One can always pull out ... and with speed laws, overtaking at over the speed limit, is still against the law (although it should not be) - but it is. I found the car very quiet, and found the electronic packages effective, and surprisingly, the alarms did not irritate me. The base model had hard plastic door armrests, and the seats were not very adjustable, with some more adjustment they would have been decent seats. For around town the base model seemed very good value to me.
@CarExpert We are replacing the Escape with a GT Line due to it being Diesel and us doing a lot of open road km's and towing. I used the CarExpert team to find me a GT Line coming in December so you saved me a long wait. Thanks Team. Got it for a good deal too!
Had the previous model. Went to the rav4 for some additional boot space. This seems to address that shortcoming. I do recall servicing was expensive. Way more than the rav4. But overall, I think this Sportage is a better car than the RAV. Just gotta decide whether I want to go back to a diesel.
The 2.0 TD engine is excellent, no substitute for torque. This is combination with the 8-speed torque converter gearbox, it's a winner in my opinion. Maybe the last 'hoorah' for diesel.
Didn't actually realise how all round good these are. And the 7 segment speedometer is a really cool thing and doesn't make you wish you had a full screen!
@Nathan_Samuel I've got a Toyota Starlet aka Suzuki Baleno colab here in South Africa 🇿🇦. When I tap on the map it goes full screen. Maybe works differently on certain cars. Worth a try though
My android auto goes across the widescreen specifications. You need to make sure you have the latest version Android Auto on your phone and Kia infotainment.
I’ve seen what I assume is the short wheel base version here in the UK and it’s so much easier on the eyes. Don’t have that awkward rear three-quarter. Subjective I know, but still interesting how something like that can make a difference.
Will you guys do a 2024 Kia Sorento for Australia, I have been looking for a good review video, but as it is quite new, i can't find any good ones, and from watching your other videos I know you guys do a pro review :)
I ordered my GT Line diesel in February last year. Unfortunately the dealer did not have the GT Line for a road test when I bought it (only the SX) so I bought it blind relying on the SX test drive and reviews such as your previous ones. Have owned it for just over three months. Here are my thoughts after owning it for a while including some long country trips. Positives - good torquey engine/economy. Excellent ride/handling (let down by the steering - more on that later), nice dash instrument panel. Headlights are great. Love the sunroof operation. Negatives - for a top line model the interior is sparse with the bleak funereal black interior with no contrasting highlights. Unfortunately Kia treats the Australian market pretty bad as it doesn't offer the nice contrasting trim colour options as they do in overseas markets. Also for a top line model there are too many hard plastics in the interior and very little upmarket features like temp controls for rear passengers, very poor stereo sound despite the fancy brand (again hardly what you'd expect in a $60k car and surprisingly none of your testers have called this out), seat cushions that are too short making them uncomfortable on long trips, very poor steering with little road feel and hardly any precision at straight ahead (it actually has a bit of play) which is at odds with it's good handling (it's almost as if the steering was designed for a different chassis). It has an extremely large turning circle - I actually thought it was a fault - I need to do three point turns where my previous much larger 4wd Jeep Grand Cherokee could do a u turn, again surprising none of your testers have noted this. The aircon is not great, it barely copes with 35+ days we've had here with the sun shining unless you put it on auto or turn the fan right up both of which makes it a noisy experience. So it is basically a good family car but hard to believe it was car of the year. The GT line in particular is overpriced for what it is. I probably won't be keeping the Kia more than a year as as I no longer get much enjoyment from driving it. I just don't know what to get next. I'd go back to a Jeep Grand Cherokee in a heartbeat but they are way more expensive now and the diesel is no longer available.
Have just ordered a white GT Line Diesel. Pretty impressed with the test drive etc. Cross shopped to a RAV4 hybrid, and a Lexus NX. Dealers are not able to order the GT Line models ATM. They are just holding them until the factory orders come back on line again. Not expecting to see mine until about July 2024.
Great car but good luck getting one, these have similar wait time to toyota hybrids. I wanted one but ended up getting a Tucson that came under 2months. A friend ordered the Sportage at the same time as me and it just arrived 2 weeks ago while my tucson is turning 15 months old.
Paul, my family drives a GT-Line diesel, and it's a beautiful cosseting long driver. All up, the car excellent, but it has two less than stellar characteristics 1. The Harmon Kardon system is probably the worst audio system I've ever had. I've driven in budget cars with 4 Speaker systems that have better bass, mid range and treble. Absolutely dreadful and no fiddling of the dials improves things. 2. Android Auto connectivity is woeful. The dealers know it's a problem, but have no fix. Carplay is better, but still disconnects from time to time.
This my 4 th Kia diesel May 2022 a LX 4wd 8 sp auto (the cheapest version in NZ ) I have done approx 37K , I really love this vehicle ......the roads in NZ are really shocking ....but this beauty handles it very well , my fuel economy is between 5.8 - 6.7 ..... ( I reckon the quality of the fuel is to blame for it ) as I always drive the same distance /speed every day . >>> The only thing I DON'T like is the lane assist which I always switch off .....
Ordered in June 22, still waiting, not even scheduled for production. I'm not sure if I'm getting the 23 model or 24. Hope they don't cancel the orders like what they did to Sorento.
We have an 18-month-old Sportage (SX Grade, petrol, front-wheel drive, auto)... and I cannot recommend it enough. Of course, every car has its flaws - so, to be upfront: - The touchscreen might look amazing, but it can be a tad difficult to reach and hit your intended touchscreen targets on bumpier roads. Part of that is because it's a biiiig screen set up for left-hand drive - so it's a long way to reach. - The 2.0L base engine can feel a tad underdone, and does like a drink. That said, it's fine for keeping up with urban traffic and doing the weekend shopping run. - The digital instrument cluster looks dated before its time, like it's out of a 1980s Magna. I'd just prefer dials, to be honest. But what's great about it: - The ride. That ride is so well-tuned and adjusted for regular roads. Forget the 130km/h washy road test; the major test is suburban lumps and bumps at 45 km/h and the Kia is so well set up for those. - It's still just such a nice, comfortable, easy place to be on long drives. Visibility is easy, the cabin feel and design is great, the practicality and space is fantastic. - The handling and body control is remarkably good for a pretty big car. We drove a Rav4 hybrid while the car wasn't available to us; that just felt bulky and floaty compared to the Sportage. The Kia just felt so much better to drive.
These have grown quite a bit. Would not call these sub-compact anymore. They are even larger sized now than the original CR-V. Even the Seltos is now as large as the original sportage.
Aged well? It's only been out for a couple year. Do they expect car design to change every 6 months or something? Also the Android Auto is not split screen. I've never seen it like that so you must have changed it as full screen is the default setting.
Love your reviews Paul, I am looking at a Kia Sportage, I know you are an advocate for the Diesel but I am just a bit wary of getting a Diesel car while we have the clown in government pushing us towards EV's and down the track a diesel vehicle will be a lot more expensive to run and also have terrible re sale value. What are your thoughts on this?
Hyundai makes one of the best wet clutch dct gearboxes available before you go to something like a PDK. So odd comment to make unless you're talking about their dry clutch dcts
What about a Tucson diesel? There are plenty on the market; Elite and Highlander spec. Identical drive train to the Sportage. And no, I do not sell cars for Hyundai. Most seem to be demo cars with less than 5000km on the clock; 2022 and 2023 models.
@Richard-sl8we might be worth a look. I did check them out originally but went with the Kia for the better warranty and it had some extras that the Hyundai didn't.
Can you guys please show the speedo and the rev counter when the car is driving on the back straight from just before the start and all the way to the end?
Hi Paul, Some constructive criticism if I may. One of your worst car reviews; you're clearly not a fan of the Sportage or your mind was elsewhere? The 0 - 100km/h time of 8.5s means nothing in isolation; vs your Tesla it's slow; yes! How does it compare to the competition in this segment. How is it vs a RAV-4 hybrid, Mazda CX5 diesel or a Sportage 1.6T? A good comparison will be a Sportage hybrid vs the RAV-4 hybrid, when Kia launches early 2024.
I have the gt line diesel 2023 and the lane keep assist is top. It is working very well. I mainly use it on the highway tho and occasionally in the suburbs for fun but this feature is designed to be used on motorways.
What I dont understand about not having wireless Apple Play and Android Auto. What is the reasoning behind this? Wired has thr ability to charge while connected which is the only reason why some choose wires over wireless. Anything care to give their thoughts?
I've seen reports saying that it has to do with Google wanting Google maps as the default navigation system for the vehicle and kia didn't want to do that. The lower grade Kia's that don't have inbuilt navigation have wireless Android auto.
Why have all car manufacturers taken to just bolting screens onto the dash in recent years. It looks cheap n nasty. Why can’t they integrate the screens into the dash? Surely it can’t be that difficult
In the early days of Holden they advertised that their cars were tuned for Australian roads. This piece of marketing still seems to live on with motoring journalists. I've been to many countries on a variety of continents, and I still can't see what makes Australian roads more special than another place in the world? I also don't feel that our roads are worse than other places in the world. Maybe German Autobahns are in another category, but most countries roads are not as pristine as their residents would like.
It’s the variety of road conditions we have that these cars need to cater for. There is very noticeable difference between cars tuned for Australia and those tuned for other countries. Most noticeable are Korean, Chinese and Indian brands.
Serious question for CarExpert: why do you keep re hashing reviews of cars you have already reviewed or review every single trim spec of the same car? 85% of reviews are Utes, SUV’s and EV’s Kia Stinger had its last production run this year, could have done something on that. Lots of cars you guys seem to miss.
I have a 2021 my22 sorento... android auto is not full screen and it can't be changed... KIA needs to pull their finger out it's ridiculous after 2 yrs with the car... there is no update
@@tbenton Na have not... going in for service in a few weeks... will ask them to check... I did find today that you can go into phone settings section when on android auto... and under phone projection I added split screen adds maps... but downs put it full screen android auto... so yeah.. a software issues...
? WT is this review ? all I can hear is , well its getting OLD and its not that great after all ? so its crap ? don't buy it or don't buy the GT and use your scout to find a car ? What is this ?
