At a ceremony at the Library of Congress, philosopher Kwame Anthony Appiah received the 2024 John W. Kluge Prize for Achievement in the Study of Humanity from Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. Appiah is the Silver Professor of Philosophy and Law at New York University. He is internationally recognized for his contributions to the study of philosophy as it relates to ethics, language, nationality and race. Appiah also writes "The Ethicist" in the New York Times Magazine, a column and newsletter that explores ethical approaches to solving interpersonal problems and moral dilemmas. Established with an endowment provided by the late John W. Kluge, the Kluge Prize recognizes and celebrates work of the highest quality and greatest impact that advances understanding of the human experience. The Prize, awarded every two years for $500,000, is international. The recipient may be of any nationality, and write and work in any language.
