2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrain On-Road POV Test Drive. The new GX uses Toyota's V-8-replacement (RIP), a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V-6 good for 349 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. The new V-6 is mated to a 10-speed automatic.
Okay first of all, I didn't realize the locking center differential was engaged right away -- I don't know why it would've been in the first place but I am just as cringed about it. Anyway, sorry about that.
I don't hate the new GX, I just don't really like some of the things about it for its price tag (cheaper interior materials, hollow doors, etc..). The drive was smooth on straight aways and it takes bumps without much harshness, but hitting corners or any other shift in weight and you feel every bit of the GX's over 5,000 lbs. It also feels like it takes a lot of power to get the GX going, which gets the engine's mechanical fan clutch really howling. However, the engine quickly makes its way through its 10 gears before quieting down at cruising speed
I liked what the new GX could do off-road, and it handled acceptably on-road for a true body-on-frame SUV.
