Larger tires and a better chin-- almost perfect. Dear soccer mom that buys this new- please be gentle when you're taking it to the wine tastings and grocery shopping. - signed Eager 2nd Owner.
@@srandyt2 I was hoping that is the case. And there's plenty of space in the wells for bigger tires. I wonder if a lift will mess with the E-KDSS. That Overtrail is the Land Cruiser that we were hoping for. Can't wait for that rich lady to get bored and trade mine in 3 years from now. Lol...
@@jlucguerrier Yeah. I bought a 2019 GX that first belonged to a realtor lady. I get to use it for things much different than showing houses. I have never been afraid to take a new Toyota into the wild day one.
what makes this channel so great is the camera shots. Really nobody else is doing this. The drones, the underbody protection shots, ruts, land canvasing, etc. Just a really quality review / off road channel. Keep it up!
Lexus nailed it with the styling. Sweet rig. Just picked up a 2015 GX w 86k. I wanted that Toyota V8 before it gets too hard to find! Great video as always. Long live Lexus 🇯🇵
i have a ‘16 460 Luxury bought used. That thing has been solid. The reports about these new twin turbo V6 failures on the new Tundras tell me we better stick with that V8
THE BEST F...G CHANNEL EVER. YOU TALK ABOUT REAL STAFF IMPORTANT OF EKDSS AND AND ALL OF THE ROAD FUNCTIONALITY. MOST OF THE RU-vidR JUST TALK COLOUR AND IT BETTER LOOKING THEN LAND ROVER ALL BS . AGAIN THANKYOU FOR THE BEAUTIFUL DETAILS.
I just saw one in person today (Nori Green). Its just beautiful, interior is simple but elegant. But am not paying no market adjustment (Premium $3.5K, Luxury $6K and Overtrail $15K to $25K )
You're going to regret getting the Toyota... I've looked at both pretty carefully and the Lexus is _really_ the one we are all going to want. V6, more cargo space, better suspension and much better interior... it's worth the extra $$$.
@@dirtandhappiness2023 TBH, I won’t even realistically look at any of these until at least 2026, let the RU-vidrs and mall crawlers buy the first two years of production models, we get to see what’s what, what breaks and commenters losing their minds…TFL’s 2024 Tacoma is the best example. The Ineos looks rad, but we’ll see where it stands in a few years…also a little leery of the warranty outlook vs. Toyota.
@@dirtandhappiness2023totally agree!…I have an order for the IG pending. Seriously considering cancelling that and waiting for the Lexus OT. What should I do??
Itsa 10! This video was very educational. One of the very best things about Ryan's videos is that he doesn't assume that his viewers are gear heads. This was an excellent video about how to take your Lexus out for a family spin without worrying about "can we do this." This is why l like these videos, Ryan. Keep 'em coming!
Omg thank you! You are right on time with this video. I was deciding between the new GX, previous version or 5th gen 4runner. You gave me lots of insights.
They understood what their buyers wanted right up until the infotainment screen. The HVAC and seat controls should never be on a screen. Period. Other than that, Lexus (aka, Toyota) did very well with this vehicle.
One note I have for the comments section - The low ground clearance number isn't as bad as it seems. There is one spot on the front differential crossmember that is that low, but the next lowest spot I could find is the rear diff and its like 10+ inches. There is more than enough ground clearance, it just has one low spot. Its not like a Subaru where the entire bottom of the car is close to its ground clearance number. You wont have a problem with ground clearance.
What a great review. Geez, you sure put a lot of work into filming - the editing, too, must have been a massive job with all the in-car, drone, and locked-off footage.
16mpg combined sounds good to me - I average 12 in my GX460, but mainly city driving. Hoping the turbo 6/10 speed combo on the highway is meaningfully better
The new Land Cruiser is really cool but it’s hard to ignore this with all it offers. The twin turbo v6 and much better tow capacity go a long way at making it a capable SUV. For me it’s the price and towing. GX550 surprisingly makes the land cruiser a tough buy. Both great looking too.
Very nice modern day wagon. I agree with everything you said here. And I am glad you got to enjoy the (E)KDSS on this rig. It makes it so much nicer. And it was good to see this "Overtrail Overland Adventure" was curious since 1 of your colleagues just did this vehicle on his little course, but it was not this trim. I will stick to my 4R TRD OR since I own it and it has a smaller foot print. But IF anyone were to ask me about this vehicle in this trim, I would recommend it based off your review.
@@Jim-s6i3b He had a 2018 4R TRD OR Premium. W.out KDSS. And has tested/reviewed other 4R's. The KDSS is an option on a 4R TRD OR. But not on other trims. Not everyone pays for it, so they are almost like a limited choice on the market. A fair amount of people whom want to do any modifications to a 4R won't spend the extra money on that option. And the others that don't modify, mostly don't know or care about KDSS. lol So, it is my guess, he has had limited to no exposure to people whom own 1 to match up the difference with ones w/out. It is a nice feature I opted in for. OR giving you that extra articulation is a game changer. On road it gives you better stability/lean manners that are not there in the standard 4R.
Supercool that you got an overtrail to demo. Looks like a fun trip! So what I learned with eKDSS is that its either free or locked, and that's it. No variability in the way it works outside of that. The main benefit is that you can decouple the front and rear separately vs the old system that was tied front to rear. In high range the front and rear are coupled unless the AVS detects you are on a rough road, then it keeps the rear uncoupled, except in sand mode where the rear is coupled again. In low range its the same except it keeps the front and rear coupled unless the shocks detect you are on rough roads (and you probably are if you are in low range) in which case both are uncoupled.
Great job getting your review out fast and first! Who’s going to buy the new “Land Cruiser” over the Gx at the same price? Guess the mpg will be better.
Just an FYI. The E-KDSS is an all new system. It operates differently than the previous version of KDSS. It allows for each corner to work independently compared to the old version. This allows for much better articulation and control.
Another great video!! thanks! this is the exact color and trim I would order/purchase, minus those tan seats. Nori Green Pearl Overtrail with black interior 👍 price is outside my budget, so I’ll just have wait for the new Land Cruiser and 4Runner
I´d like these reviews because Ryan tested the cars with profesionalism, teaching us all the characteristics from the vehicles, and I learn something about mechanics and I can watching the new models nowadays. Thanks Ryan.
I still dont get it if you are making a off-road focused version with extra charges then why the hell the ground clearance kept low?it should be much higher & off-road Focused vehicle doesn’t do good with underbelly spare either
LOL!😂🤣🤪😝 Those are just average sized rocks, not "boulders". Boulders are the the clothes-washer-sized rocks that I have removed with my Rubicon's winch from Oregon trails.
What a cool trail. So different from what I’m used to with Washington. I modded and wheeled an LR4 for a number of years. Very similar philosophy of offroading. It was great, but I wish the companies explained all the electronic offroad stuff in detail for us offroaders. I want to know the info on the eKDDS and how it works. Explain to me exactly what each off Road mode is doing in engineering terms, not just general concepts. It took me forever to find all the little hacks and get arounds to make the vehicle Do what I wanted. Ultimately it’s why I’m in a Jeep Gladiator. I wanted something more simple that allowed me to make the decisions of what I wanted the vehicle to do when I am offloading. That said, for a lot of people were doing trails that are kind of like on this video, mostly using it for for service, fire, roads and camping, this Lexus would be a great vehicle. I certainly prefer it over the land cruiser. And agree, get the base model.
I wish it had an air suspension option. You'd have better clearance for off-roading while smoothing out the on-frame ride on made made surfaces. I still might buy it, but I'll wait for the hybrid engine. It offers almost as much power with much better mileage. It's not only a significant savings over the 5 to 6 years I tend to keep vehicles, but the extended range can make all the difference when overlanding.
The air suspension on my GX failed while I was off-roading... I converted it to coil springs after that trip. I would not optioned it with air suspension if you off-road often. On the other hand, the hydraulic suspension on my LX have not failed me once even with all the off-road I do with it.
@@runnerxa I wouldn't even want it on my Jeep as the simplistic and lower weight design is preferable for Moab, serious rock crawling, or the tougher less traveled narrow trails in the Rockies. But on a luxury vehicle that you're trying to maximize both on and off-road characteristics, it's really nice when done right. I really like this GX, but I wish it had a little more clearance and a little bit better approach angle without having to mess with the suspension. You might be able to fit a larger tire without decreasing the articulation by bottoming out in the wheel well, but it doesn't look like it.
Made everything look like a Sunday drive, not sure if they could top something so perfected we’ll have to see if it gets extra hybrid torque with the later trim
Ryan, The Overtrail is a welcome upgrade in off road capability from Lexus but when will Lexus /Toyota finally share their front locker with the deserving people of the USA and Canada? Let me put it another way, how many millions of Camrys and RAV4s do we have to buy before they will share their best off-road components with us? 🤨
I have a rear locker in my 23 TRD OR, but it only works in 4WD crawl or low mode. I wish it would engage in 4WD High. And YES, I’d love to have a front locker as well
Decisions, decisions, decisions. Looking at 5th Gen 4Runner, waiting to see what the 6th Gen 4Runner is like or the GX550 Overtrail. You make a good case for the Lexus.
What’s the payload?! Every single overland vehicle review should list the actual payload, axle ratings and actual towing capacity of the individual vehicle sticker. I want to see the door sticker every single time please!
Love this, but still struggling as an LC200 owner with calling the LC250 Prado a Land Cruiser. Wish they had called it the “Land Cruiser Two”….as Ford did with their little “Bronco Two” in the late 80s!
i knew i loved this new model, and love it more still. what still gets me is the gas mileage. but i know i'm dealin with a luxury car, which i'm guessing lexus doesn't feel it's a problem for the audience they are after.
I know this is too pragmatic but how much will a new windshield cost for this? I am pretty sure, with that steep windshield, it will need a one every year up here in Alberta where they use 3/4 rocks for winter traction on highways.
I currently own a Subaru outback wilderness. No complaints. Based on your assessment/review of both, would you say this car is “cumbersome” to drive? Obviously two different platforms.
Good review! Saw one in person a few days ago and I gotta say, it doesn’t look as good in person as on the videos. Idk maybe because my 4Runner looks so good already, it’s hard to see another good looking vehicle 😅. Sadly with all the capability, these Lexus GXs will most likely become pavement princesses or soccer practice transporters :(
My favorite chanel and I watch it religiously ! .. why would they call it GX550 ? ..its a 3.4 twin turbo ? ..now Ryan when are you going to test the Grenadier at your course ? Or better do a comparison with the LC you're getting ...oh man, so many new 4x4 this year..can't wait for 6th gen 4runner to get reviewed here at Driving Sports TV ...DSTV ROCKS !!
I wonder if the e-KDSS is tied into the modes or speed? When driving slow you don't really need a stabilizer bar except maybe in off camber situations in which case some roll sensors could detect that and adjust the KDSS. BTW great scoop. I think you're the first to test the Overtrail trim. Since you tested the older generations of the GX can you compare the ride and handling to this one?
You should realize that the bumps at the mall parking ramp is just getting harder and harder to overcome! You need a super off-roader to get in the mall
My favorite reviews over - especially living here in Seattle. This vehicle is on my wish list for this year! Curious if I can take my current X3 on the lower portion of Old Durr Road? Seems doable but curious on your opinion. With the warm weather this weekend I may have to go venture!
Great review, thanks. I think this truck should have had a split tailgate, now that's the best of both worlds - comfortable place to sit and a bit of weather protection. I really like this car, but my local dealer wants $30k markup. Guess maybe in a couple years, boooo 🤬
Because it only offers 2 rows of seating, I’m not sure who wouldn’t just save the money and get a new (also 2 row) Land Cruiser. Or, save about 60k and just buy a used LR4. BTW, this video is great for anyone unfamiliar with Eastern Washington state, i.e. East of the Cascades. It’s like Mars over there - so unexpectedly dry and barren.
2 rows make more sense in these things anyway. My GX has the 3rd row, and its not very practical. If you're using those seats you have zero cargo space.
nice and no 3rd row !!! now if they can build them , id order a base model with moon roof delete , lot cheaper than the LC extreme markup " first edition " but lexus will still ship the high trim and price models not to kill the sales of the LC first edition
Thanks for the review Ryan. I’m curious if you’ve ever did a review on the 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road? I just sold my 11 Ranger XLT super cab 4WD and my 19 Forester Touring and bought a slightly used (6K mile) 23 Tacoma TRD OR with a 6’ bed. There’s a trail from Wenatchee to Ellensburg that a buddy of mine and I are taking this summer. He has a 19 Tacoma like my 23.
Great Video like always🥰 What nobody tells me is what is the Roof weight capacity? My Tent, Awning and Shower Tent are together 100kg. No problem for my LC 80 Series, he has 200kg Roof capacity . What does the LC Prado and GX550 2024 have?
