@@narc1408 actually that's all Mercedes is doing these days. Cutting costs. You can see it in every car they make. The new C Class uses so much cheap hard plastics on the lower half of the doors and dash whereas previous versions were soft touch. The new A Class is another good example where they've removed the touch pad. That was purely cost cutting. Also, a Dacia actually has better build quality than the new A Class. So.......

Modern Mercedes “quality” and “craftsmanship” is just cheap screens from China and gloss black plastic. Same can be said for other German luxury brands. And we wonder why China has become the world’s biggest car exporter.

Why this hate against screens in cars? I love the screens in my Mercedes, its so modern.

@@WinkelHoof one reason that I foresee is that even the highest definition screens in cars today will look horribly dated in the next 20 to 30 years because the technology evolves so rapidly. A W124 Mercedes from 1993 still looks classy inside. Another reason is they will be hard to keep clean; they will inevitably be covered in fingerprints and dust after a few years of ownership.

Fully agree with you. I even think that new approach Mazda has taken with the CX-90 is better than MB and BMW - physical buttons and scrolling wheel, inline-6 engines, sober design.

@martinmcdonald .. +1 .. Agree. .. Our new '23 S213 E-450 All-Terrain interior / dashboard is well laid out with physical controls for the HVAC... However, the new '24 S214 wagon's gimmicky door handles, the electric HVAC vent control, and the total screen touch control for everything aren't attributes. .. The lengthened wheelbase contributes to greater rear-seat legroom; I'm all for it !!

Design actually

Porsches are very fast and well built. But 964 and 993 models were 80% HAND BUILT and the quality was astounding. Even they have cheapened out.

Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment. You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. They can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even from plant-based materials (like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum). Or the Polestar 3 e.g. is using pine oil. And even if you still create a leatherette seat the classic way with petroleum base without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is very little in comparison to how much oil is used for other car parts or how much oil is burned for fuel or heating. So it is the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the priority use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down or even murdered on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse? We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.
