Pictures from the June 2024 Omaha Public Schools Making Invisible Histories Visible program. In June 2024, 48 rising Omaha Public School 9th graders worked with three college students and five social studies teachers to identify, research, and present work on the people and places surrounding Nebraska’s role in the Underground Railroad. The project included field trips to Underground Railroad sites in Nebraska and Western Iowa. Learning how to find and interpret Census Data, Plat Maps, Nebraska Territorial newspapers, and 19th-century books and journal articles on Nebraska’s history. Presentations from local and national Underground Railroad scholars and a chance to meet National Park Service staff and learn more about their Network to Freedom program and other projects they work on.
