The brand new MINI Countryman is on sale now and ready to take the fight to countless SUV rivals including the BMW X1, Range Rover Evoque and Tesla Model Y. While not really mini in any way whatsoever, the latest Countryman does retain the brand's trademark style and fun handling, but is that enough to make it stand out?
In this CarGurus UK review, Vicky Parrott gets behind the wheel of the new MINI Countryman Electric in order to find out, assessing how it performs, what ride comfort and handling are like, and whether it's practical enough to perform family car duties.

Hi Vicki, We originally thought it had gone too big, beyond what defines a mini. However on a test drive we absolutely loved it. We have ordered a sport in Legend grey and level 1. We also tried Tesla and the iX1 forgetting BMW want excessive money for the extras to bring it up to "Normal" Looking forward to delivery. The range is horses for courses.

Charging port is at the back quarter panel on all of the pictures I’ve seen, behind the legacy fuel filler flap I thought the panel in the front grill was for sensors.

I do understand why Mini have done this to make more money on these cars. however it is not mini sized or mini priced. If you add all the packs on you are heading for North of £50k FOR A MINI lets get real.

£50K is insane. In Australia, the Countryman C (1.5T) version is priced at just over 60k AUD.

I love this car and am very glad I chose it. I have the petrol version. Re Vicki’s comments regarding the steering wheel. I find it is very comfortable to hold and the chunky pads are for your palms if you are holding it high. I am a woman with normal size hands. Otherwise a good review.

@@WayneSwan-k9e No I didn’t test drive the electric version. I don’t think it was available in May when I ordered mine and anyway my mind was set on sticking with petrol. I am still delighted with it, Its green credentials are good and it is a joy to drive.

Great review Vicki. My issue with BMWs ownership of mini is the stretching of a model into a brand. The mini was originally a single model in a range to which a few variants were added as time went on. I know this was about 200 years ago but the impact that car had on the world due to its combination of affordability and practicality born out of genius thinking and innovation means that car is embedded in our psyche. So, when something large, goopy looking, with doors draped in what appear to be my nan's old doilies comes along, it's generally difficult to react with anything but hollow laughter. And that's before you find out how much the sodding thing costs. The shock of that would wipe the smile off the face of the Joker. Ford are committing the same cultural vandalism with their new Capri and are now the laughing stock of the motoring world. If your only criteria for car selection is that it absolutely must have a mini badge on it and the interior has to light up like some knitted Christmas tree, I guess rob a bank and get one. But in any sane world, surely there are objectively much better cars to consider. No, mini is dead to me now. This is not that car and doesn't have any right to wear its badge.
@Kelveron
@Kelveron 2 месяца назад
Unless the car is very high end and high price super/hypercar, a single model brand is simply not economically viable. Also, the original Mini, actually did have different versions, like the Clubman which was an estate.

What’s in a name? Personally, I see Mini as a brand with a range of cars with styling cues that differentiate them from the rest. My personal jury is out atm on the styling of the new incarnations. I feel once they’ve been around for a while they will be accepted as okay. My problem generally is the increasing size and heft of vehicles. The Countryman has grown to a size beyond my personal interest. I’m happy with previous gen thanks. Oh, and mine runs 225/50 18” with runflats and the ride is perfect, and absolutely still fun to drive.

God no🤡💀 Crossover-SUVs are an utter scourge. And we question where all the inflation and lack of diversity comes from after +15 years of automakers/shareholders demanding that buyers only want crossover-SUVs that happen to be the most profitable to finance. Anyone blaming EVs and not crossover-SUVs for the current mailaise clearly aren't thinking critically.

We need to get past the name. Mini hasn't been Mini since it pretty much came back in the early 00s. It's a brand nowadays and has nothing to do with the size of the car. Have not liked any of the pics or videos of these however in the metal actually it does have something I like. JCW styling does add something to it too. The interior is really smart, although there are some cheaper (like Poundland cheap) plastic-feeling bits down the lower half of the interior. I do like that it's a little more unusual to look at than the usual squarish boxed SUVs. Sadly the cost and people's anxiety about range might put some off, even though most owners won't be doing long trips and will be able to charge at home.

BMW should never had been allowed to own The Mini brand. As with The Fiat 500, The Mini was designed as an A to B car that most people could afford. BMW have made it bigger and very expensive. The VW UP was more Mini like, at an affordable price. I won't be buying one that's for sure and as for BMW, just an over hyped car brand.

‘Quite a bit smaller than a Tesla Model Y’. I did nearly laugh. What isn’t?! TBH, I genuinely saw the thumbnail pic first, and thought there was a new small Range Rover launched. It’ll sell, to anyone determined to keep on buying a mini. The philosophy behind the design of this, is the same as the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise of movies/books…the idea is, the audience grows up and so do the characters in the story, and the way it’s told. I’m fascinated to see if that philosophy works for a car. Good review, take care all.
