Is ranking films an inherently click-baity, problematic way of interpreting art? That's for me to feel guilty about and you to ignore as I walk through the 96th Academy Awards best picture nominees, a delightfully diverse arrangement of - some of - 2023's best films.
Behold the contenders (ALPHABETICALLY, not spoiling my own video):
American Fiction
Anatomy of a Fall

Hi J.R.R. Talkin', this is the First video by you I've ever seen, so I watched & it in full, & wish to say I really appreciate how articulate you are, & your very analytical & thoughtful way of describing specific things about each movie, and how & Why you felt about each film based on certain aspects.😊 FYI so far I've only seen Barbie (in the theater) & I loved it,🩷 & Sun nite at home I saw American Fiction that I liked a lot, Except for its last 15-20 mins I did Not like (I'd much prefer IF Monk had just Told Coraline that He wrote the book F*#k as he Intended it to be in Protest of Black people stereotypes, & Never expected it to be praised or popular or earn so much $ from it, & he's using That money to pay for his Mom's nursing home care). And several nites ago I began watching Killers of the flower Moon, but fell asleep on my couch during it, so I plan to continue watching it, and to watch The Holdovers, Poor Things & Oppenheimer quite soon.

Fascinating dive into all of those movies! Your takes are so well articulated, I cannot disagree with most of them. Thanks for a great video! I resonated the most with Past Lives, but wouldn't argue that's it's objectively better than Anatomy. I loved when you described Past Lives as delicate, that's exactly how I felt watching it. It's like experiencing what love is in two different cultures/languages. How endearing is that!

I saw killers of the flower moon n the holdover only …n… enjoyed the holdover more than kotfm. I agreed with your analysis for kotfm. I hadn’t watch Hollywood movies for a while lately. Because of your video I’m going to see past lives n Oppenheimer. Thanks J.R.R.Talkin’.

In descending order: Maestro Barbie Killers of the Flower Moon (Had a very hard time sitting thru those.) This group has my great affection: The Holdovers (a nice addition to our Christmas collection) American Fiction ( I teach lit &write &my mom was stricken with Alzheimer’s. And is lovely satire, so….😊) The films that define pure artistic Cinema: the Zone of Interest Past Lives Anatomy of a Fall Far and away the best films that make watching them an EXPERIENCE: Poor Things Oppenheimer Sensory overload in IMAX- Wow. Phenomenal performances Poor Things story is an original iteration of Frankenstein with an absurd twist yet with an underlying theme of a woman’s remarkable transformation from ignorant bliss to fully realized modernity. I adore Lanthimos work and Emma Stone was enchanting, just delightful. Oppenheimer’s biography as you know from the book is terrific Nolan adaptation. How he pares the dense encyclopedia of details into the core essential of a remarkable man’s life is extraordinary. His screenplay is brilliant. There is not a single performance in the humongous cast that isn’t outstanding. The cinematography, the score, the visual effects and editing are overwhelming, magnificent. Even tho we read the book and the equally engrossing 150 pages of Notes, we find the non-linear timeline enlivens the density of the text. The depiction of how Jean Tatlock dies piques our interest. Her role is essential in shaping another level of Oppie’s character. And Kitty’s role is essential in much the same way. There is no need to expand these women’s roles and I’m a little annoyed to hear so much complaining about the lack of their character development. Everything in this story reveals what kind of man Oppenheimer was. The most important women in his life expose his complexity, naïveté, and arrogance in pivotal scenes. We don’t need more exposition. Hubs (who hadn’t read the book) and I had to wait TWO weeks to get open seats and we saw it twice more. Still the same chilling effect. We are very much still in a fragile nuclear age. Maybe young people will learn the terrible effects of believing MAD to be only an improbable consequence. Oppenheimer believed, obtuse as he was, such a devastating weapon, monitored by the international scientific community, would be the deterrent to end war forever. 70 years later we have sidestepped the agreement to have nuclear disarmament and the arms race continues. How does this film not scare the shit out of us? 8 films can be enjoyed on the small screen but these two are on a whole higher level and must only be shown on the big screen. Let’s hope for some re-releases over the years. They are, as absurdist comedy and bone-chilling drama, films for the ages.

First of all I love your knowledge and the way you criticize movies. For the movie American Fiction I disagree with you as I do think the story is very actual with all these fake activism in Holliwood. Other than that, I just subscribed to your channel and I will keep enjoying your content. Well done! 😊
