Hi I’m in zone 7 Virginia. That’s true sweet William are deer resistant . I have a big big area for wild flowers only. I bought 5 pounds of wild flowers from Eden brothers 3 years ago and sweet William blooms so beautiful. They reseed them self ( foxglove, deme’s rocket , larkspur, blanket flower, daisies, coreopsis and of course sweet William . Blooms in the spot so beautiful.

I live in Sulphur Springs and last summers heat plus this year freezes some of my dianthus from Lowes survived. This year with inflation they are $5 for a four inch pot, so I am attempting starting from seeds (pinks) with heat pad and grow light. Mine are in my front flower bed with slight slope and partial sun. Wish me luck!

Really awesome variety of dianthus colors you choose, I started my dianthus about a month ago and they all germinated well seeds from swallowtail, actually I had to thin them out because every single seed germinated. can’t wait to get them in the garden.

D. 'First Love' is an excellent choice. Seeded in January will bloom first year March through frost in zone 4/5. I have found rabbits love the buds on the low growers AND the 'Black Knight', although not the Sweet William variety.

Really appreciate this video. Last spring I purchased 5-6 varieties of dianthus. Some tall, some medium and some short. Most came from Shades of Green but others were clearance. Unfortunately, I think I lost most of the tags. But I was amazed that they stayed green all winter! More worried about summer because when I tried these a few years ago, they didn’t survive but could have been an operator error. 🤣 Maybe too much sun and not enough water in that location at my other house.

Mine definitely fade in the summer … I just make sure to keep them watered and the hit them with some fertilizer at the end of the summer.

I absolutely adore dainthus. I don’t know what variety I have but they have the silvery pointed style leaves and they look like tiny little carnations with an absolutely DIVINE aroma!! I have the standard garden center varieties also, and I like them; but the silver leaf one with the fragrant blooms are my absolute favorites! Please do show us how to divide these asap. Pretty please!

My sweet Williams totally madew wait a year to see them but worth it. Love the dark cherry variety. I do think all of the black and white are the same but have seen it called different names. I've been growing some things as a kind of 'savings' for stock to sell in retirement and those would probably be a good one❤

Zone 7b/8a NC here. We have huge deer pressure, and carnations are one of the few crops they've never damaged on my farm. So I'd say they are resistant, but not repellent or anything like that. But they're also not the healthiest plants and I'm still trying to work out why...

Hi. Question. Do you direct sow outside in your Beds or Pots? I don’t have the area at this time to start seeds. Thank you for sharing and replying to our comments.
@shesamadgardener
@shesamadgardener 6 месяцев назад
Right now I only sow inside but once the last frost in my area passes, I will begin sowing directly outside. If you don’t have much room inside, look up winter sowing on RU-vid … you can starts lots of seeds outside right now with winter sowing techniques.

It’s Canterbury bells! You can get the seeds almost anywhere … it’s also known as campanula … they are best sown in the fall as they are biennials.

I am beginner so excuse my silly questions but how should I proceed? How often should I water and in what way: spray or the way you feed before putting seeds into soil? When should I open humidity don? Thanks ahead!
@shesamadgardener
@shesamadgardener 4 месяца назад
You should water before the soil becomes dry to the touch … I prefer to water from below and allow the soil to suck up the water.
@shesamadgardener
@shesamadgardener 4 месяца назад
Humidity dome should come off as soon as 50-60% of your seeds have germinated.

@shesamadgardener
@shesamadgardener 6 месяцев назад
I’ll try to do a tutorial on pinching. The first set of leaves you see will be the seed leaves … all leaves after that are true leaves … it’s best to pinch above 2 sets of true leaves.

Hmm, that could be a couple of things … light is too far away and they get leggy, but o much fertilizer, or too much water.

I tried your dry packing method and I couldn’t get the soil to moisten all the way through. I checked on them before going to bed and they were still floating. I placed them on top of each other to push the little trays down but the next morning they were still floating. So I tried popping a hole in the side of one whole tray. Hours later, still floating. Idk 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dianthus do require a little more maintenance. If you want consistent blooms, they have to be deadheaded. The foliage usually stays lush and green year around though. A little bit of fertilizer on a bi-weekly or monthly schedule is also helpful.
