2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness - POV Driving Impressions 

I just bought a subaru crosstrek, I would have bought a lambo but i'm not quite there yet.

this thing really feels like a true successor to the original forester, nice to see offroad-capable versions of normal cars (basically the anti-SUV) come back

One thing that goes unnoticed but important for me is the darker colored headliner. It is only available on the Wilderness trim.

I adore my 2023 Crosstrek. It has gotten me through some crazy weather in New England. If you put a set of good winter tires on these (Blizzak, Nokian, etc.) they can get through anything. It’s really cool to see Subaru add a wilderness trim finally. I think the biggest upgrade is the CVT cooler honestly. I would love to have that on my 2023. It will help elongate the life of the CVT which are prone to failure around 110k-125k miles. I Highly recommend anyone who purchases this to do a CVT fluid change at 30k-40k mile increments. Subaru of America says the CVT fluid is a lifetime fluid which is insane. You could easily get 150k+ miles out of this if you service it properly.

My wife had a first year (2013) Crosstrek with the 2.0, now drives a 2021 Sport with the 2.5 and the bigger engine made the car SO much better... With 50k miles on the '21, she's excited to get the Wilderness. BTW, the Trade-In Value on Subaru's in FANTASTIC..!

My first subaru and im very satisfied. the screen isnt an issue at all it goes well enought and the Apple carplay been perfect, 0 issues at all yet. Ive already had someone come at me to look at the car when I first fueled it up ahah. Love it, its fun even though i looked for something with more power. for the price point the package is incredible, the tech is incredible and it doesnt very well on trails/bumpy roads. I disagree with the sound system being just "ok", its actualy VERY good, my other car I was considering was the mazda cx5 and mazda 3 and the Crosstrek system completly obliterate the Bose in the mazdas. Even though the Bose is good sounding its weak as hell, If you like to listen to music with a good sound system that is powerful this one is great, one of the best I had, Its as good as my Challenger with the Kicker sound sytem. All in all very satisfied

The size looks great! If I was in the market for an off-road crossover, I’d consider this.

If I didn’t love my jeep so much, this would definitely be a vehicle I’d be in the market for. “Very usable little car” seems to be the best way to describe this thing. Just seems like a great all around vehicle with a solid price point.

A turbo away from perfection.

I bought one yesterday. Took it quickly around some dirt roads, I’m impressed with how much oversteer the car allows even with the trac control on. Fun to drive, looking forward to when my area gets snow!

This with a DCT and 2.4t would be the perfect daily. I would have never got my GTI if subaru just figured out the powertrain for the upper levels.

I have a 2019 outback that I use for "softroading" but also some actual offroading as well. My outback has been the first on the trail after the snow last spring and cleared the trail from all the fallen trees and landslides. Very, and I mean very few vehicles have been up the same Olympic side of the mountain roads that my outback has. I have a hard time believing the different x modes actually help much, but maybe I should have faith in Subaru. My OG x mode (single mode, either on or off) has gotten me through things stock jeep wranglers wouldn't dare, dry river beds and over landslides at 6000 feet.

Subaru has been stepping up there game! Just got the new BRZ and would love this as a winter car!

This was a very impressive test drive especially in this bad weather! I go back and forth between this and a Forester. I've been hesitant about buying a CVT or a DCT and an engine with less than 200 lbs of torque. Great job! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

If a buyer could swing the extra ~$4k, the outback wilderness gets them into the 2.4L turbo powerplant -- assuming that the crosstrek size isn't the primary reason for purchase. That's a big deal for hauling lots of people and things. And it might make a difference at high altitudes.

I just picked up my 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness last week. It's my 3rd Crosstrek and my favorite so far. I traded my 2021 Limited and got a great trade in value against my new one. My only complaint with the Crosstrek is that it lacks an interior hatch release which is something I feel on any vehicle today is not a luxury feature however Subaru still insists on leaving off the Crosstrek. Also really disappointed the Wilderness doesn't come with the compass option and the upgraded mirror is pricey although I have ordered one. To me it seems illogical to be offering the off-road capabilities such as higher clearance the sport mode and skid plate but no compass which seems like it should be a no brainer. I like the updated screen and climate control over the manual knobs and buttons on the older models and the phone charger slot is nice and big which is great when I have a ruggedized Doogee phone that doesn't fit in the charging port of our Outback Wilderness edition. I ordered the Alpine Green Crosstrek Wilderness edition which imo is the sharpest looking but that's personal taste. Alpine Green is only available in the Wilderness edition. We are a Subaru Wilderness family with an Autumn Green Outback and Alpine Green Crosstrek and my middle son who had a WRX changed to a Forester Wilderness edition when he got his big dog. 😊 Overall excellent vehicles to drive. Great gas mileage and my new one has a Harman Kardon stereo so I can blast the tunes.

I have a 23’ Crosstrek sport, I just wish the wilderness, all models would have the 2.4 turbo, I love the 2.4 in the outback wilderness but the forester and Crosstrek definitely need it

Funny comparison. I went from test driving this to a GR Corolla with the performance pack the next day. The capabilities of both cars as far as traction was incredible. The GR of course accelerated like a bat out of hell, with a delicious manual. The CVT, engine and lack of manual here made me wish for the WRX engine. The car was otherwise a perfect daily for the reason Topher mentions (visibility, comfort, capability, interior which was better than GRC). This is a cool car that will do everything except performance.

Get rid of the stupid CVT. This is the only thing stopping me from buying this as my daughter’s first car. That motor would pair perfectly with a 8-spd DCT.

Been saying this for years. Subaru needs to make a lo-pressure turbo engine. So it could make some TORQUE. The 182hp is fine but it needs to make about 250ft/lbs @ 3500rpm.

Is there a reason why infontainment systems are still laggy to this day? I mean the cheapest Chinese tablet is much more responsive than some screens mounted in pretty expensive new cars

Nice video. One suggestion, the start of the video where the camera is jiggling (because you are walking around?) is quite annoying. I like the Crosstrek, but prices have crept up too much. 32K for the Wilderness and approaching 35K with options. At 30k it would be a great value, but at 32-35k, not so much. At this price, there are a lot of other choices, both in the high end subcompact and low/mid trim compacts. The Crosstrek Wilderness is probably the least capable of the Wilderness models as well. The "skid plate" is a joke, no front facing camera, same engine as the Sport, and the cladding is butt ugly. The transmission cooler and additional towing capacity are nice, although I dont think one would want to tow 3500 pounds with this car. Personally, I would go with the Sport trim (or Impreza RS if you dont go off road). It is a bit cheaper, and the Wilderness trim adds minimal off road capability. Now if they would just put in a 200 hp turbo they would sell like hotcakes.

The price point just kills me. I bought my '20 6MT for 23k. After upgrades, there's no way I'd trade it for one of these. It checks all the boxes this has, but without the CVT or invasive Eyesight. I'll own it until it destroys itself.

Just test drove this tonight and I loved it. That red is so sharp. Still debating between this and a Forester Sport.

Drove the new Outback Touring. The interior is a huge upgrade from the previous gen, and even if everything is made through the screen, it´s easy. Icons are big and menus are quite simple. Shame Subaru decided to not make a reversing camera full screen, just half which looks weird. RAB is very handy when parking. It might look like a crossover now, but at least it´s a true off-road estate unlike the new A6 Allroad or E-Class All Terrain for example. Subaru really stepped up!

Definitely needs more power, a 6 speed auto would also be a major improvement

this body and chassis could have something really special with a powertrain... the lack of power and 29 mpg got me fumbling...

Love your videos! :) I almost went with a 2024 Crosstrek Onyx (Sport in the US I think?) - but I preferrered the interior of the 24 Forester more. Can't wait to get mine in a week or so! Subaru stays winning (minus the dated infotainment...)!

I watch reviews like this and WISH I had a need for this car. Here in DFW, all I need is a car that does a good job sitting in city traffic lol.

This is the first time I've seen that red color and it looks pretty good, but I still don't understand why they have those big cutouts in the cladding near the wheels. Also, for the price it would've been nice to get a rear lsd, and as always my disappointment in the loss of a manual transmission is immeasurable. All in all this is nearly the perfect daily driver for where I live in northern Michigan.

Thanks for sharing this video! This seems like a pretty nice option! My current daily is a '13 manual Sti so it's hard to consider ditching the turbo and transmission... But everything else (minus the screen) just seems ultimately better and more reliable.. tsk tsk decisions decisions...

I love what Subaru has done with the Crosstrek/wilderness edition. In the past I owned a 1997 forester and a 2007 forester LL BEAN EDITION. I loved end enjoyed both of my foresters. I liked that both of my foresters had a traditional transmission . I don’t why Subaru decided to go with a CVT. Subaru should have kept the traditional transmission. I would love to buy a crosstrek wilderness but the only thing holding me back is the CVT.

How well does the wireless charging work? I noticed the constant white light flashing. Wondering if that meant it couldn't get a good contact to charge? I would hope they would use a material that wasn't too slippery for phone.

Hey, quick question. @ 13:33 you mentioned how you would like manual transmission (so would I as I'm about to buy a CT) or you also said a torque converter automatic. I had no idea what that was, so I briefly looked it up, and it essentially is what makes a car go (faster I think) but isn't that what all automatic transmission cars have, including the Subaru CT? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but just doing my best to learn. Thanks for the video review, as I was debating between the CT and CTW, but I can't justify the extra cost and the gas mileage is better on the CT vs CTW.

Looks appealing......cvt, no physical climate controls, looks like an electrical e brake. For me these features are unappealing.

This or a 6sp GTI...? Completely different cars, both scratch a different itch. But cost about the same. Even with insurance.

Although towing 3500lbs definitely seems a bit of a stretch, could you see it being able to safely and occasionally tow around 1500lbs - 2000lbs safely?
