It really annoys me when RU-vid car reviewers act like bigger wheels are an upgrade when they aren't. Grippier tires are an upgrade. In the real world cars with more sidewall are much more driveable. Don't buy into the marketing BS from the manufacturers. Like the channel though and keep up the great work.
@russellparr9252
@russellparr9252 5 месяцев назад
More sidewall is advantageous only for ride quality. If you're talking grip and steering feel, shorter sidewalls are better because they are stiffer. That said, there probably isn't much of an advantage going from 18" to 19" wheels on the WRX except for having slightly more clearance for the Brembos.
@DragonKnightX12
@DragonKnightX12 4 месяца назад
You couldn't be more wrong, it's not just marketing, there is a very good reason why all the high performance cars come with big wheels. Bigger wheels give clearance for big brakes and wider tires. Those ARE the grippier tires my guy. Low profile tires have a wider tread and stiff sidewall resulting in a wide square contact area that gives a ton of grip for high performance driving. Better handling and more feedback too.

I don't think there's any other automotive youtuber that gives a detailed, nuanced driving experience that makes the viewer feel like they're driving the car rather than watching a review quite as well as Tyler does. Add to that the brilliant production quality of his reviews that's at the level of professional automotive TV shows like Top Gear and you have a channel that's a required viewing for anyone interested in cars.

@@jscifres100I just recently got to test drive a premium gr corolla, trying to see if it is really that much better than my wrx tr. Yes, the engine maybe a bit more potent in gr corolla but it is not like night and day compare to wrx which you can go aftermarket (after warranty) but I still give the driving experience a bit to gr. Interior though, I will take the one in tr any day. Dual zone thermostat, better speakers with sub, integrated nav for when there is no cell signal, recaro branded seats. I am 5’11 but once I set my seats in gr, I tried to seat behind me and my legs can barely fit plus the width of the seats will only let 2 adults to seat in the back. 3 will be pushing it or for short trips to the store or fastfood only. Subaru dont put wireless charger in wrx because it is useless and your phone wont stay in place driving fast. Trunk space is a win for wrx, gr corolla barely beats the one in gr86/brz unless you remove the top cover but thieves will be tempted. I also got my wrx tr for $4546 off msrp ($43,306 to $38,760) so it makes it cheaper than gr corolla core plus Subaru offers better financing rates for it. Great time to be a 6 speed manual driver with all the options! Can’t go wrong with either choice🎉❤

All Subaru really needs to do in my opinion is throw the STI drivetrain / trans in the TR and they'd have the the best STI they've ever made hands down. Easy power with a drivetrain that can actually hold it and a competent AWD system. Not that it'll ever happen but would be amazing. I'd be trading mine in if they ever went down that route. The TR is just not quite enough, but a step in the right direction
@thrillhousecycling7260
@thrillhousecycling7260 5 месяцев назад
That's expensive though. Reality is, Subaru is a pretty small company! They have to be cost-efficient. Honestly, outside of transmission and the adjustable diffs, you can basically unlock an STI and a ton more with 1-3k invested into the current gen WRX (Cobb, springs, pads, fluid). It's insanely tuneable (and reliable when tuned), so I kinda get their approach tbh

Thanks - the review I've been waiting for - already knew GRC would be still on top but this confirms it. Not that much a different wheel and bigger brakes could achieve, especially outside track. Using lightweight forged 18" wheels would have been better than 19" wheels. Subaru really needs to bring back WRX STI FA24 with more than 330 HP to be competitive.. They also need to do something about the new center diff found in 2018+ STIs slowing down acceleration by more than half a sec vs older STIs.
@Realistick
@Realistick 5 месяцев назад
Honestly, the suspension and brakes improved the car a ton. If you were contemplating this or the limited trim, the TR is attractive. I think they should really consider making the TR a package available for low trims though. If I could get one with this suspension and brake setup at $35k-ish... I'd probably still buy the GRC because it's more fun, but I think it would have made the TR much more compelling to the sport compact audience. We'd really need that kind of STI if we're talking $45k!

I was so close to buying a 23 wrx, but the steering was a big let down for me as well as the seats, even in the limited. The aggressive bottom side bolstering with its metal bars (wtf were they thinking) are not forgiving if you have larger legs. I preferred hoping back in my MK6 Jetta after driving the rex in regards to steering and comfort. I like the GR a lot and find it comfortable but could use some more space and an analog dash would be preferred, but to get awd in a manual with an analog brake (looking at you golf r), there isn’t anything else out there being made anymore, I really wish the focus RS, STi, and the Evo (especially) were still around

If one can find a GRC premium with sport package for MSRP, it would be the better AWD pick over the WRX-TR. The TR failed when Subaru didnt tune the motor to over 300HP. But I will say, the TR will be more easy to find at MSRP or under. So considering similar prices, it comes down to preferences. Thanks for sharing the comparison video!

Thank you for the review! It came out basically how a Wrx and a Sti would compare. The first is better for daily driving, or if you have family, and the Gr is more sporty. All the modern Subarus don’t have a firm center feel since they have included the steering assist.

Thanks for watching! It does seem like Subaru is at least going in the right direction with the TR. The Corolla is a cool car, reminds me of the Neon SRT 4s. Just like the SRT 4 those engines are strung out to the max, though. Theres not much left you can do if you like to work on your car. I also am reminded how being so high-strung went for the long term reliability on the Neon, as well, and wonder how these engines will hold up under years realisticly fiesty stop light pulls. That interior, too...i just would not want to spend time in it. The WRX might not be the beast it was in the 90/00s but it just seems like a fun car that is very dialy friendly (plus the Subaru aftermarket, and ease of working on them, is unbelievable).

Thanks for the review and insight. I ordered a WRX TR in February and mine should be here next week. Unfortunately I was not able to drive a GR Corolla, so it was nice to hear your feedback. The Toyota dealer who would go for MSRP wouldn't let me test drive a GR. (I am 50 year adult) I had to put a deposit, sign a contract and put financing in place order to test drive one. They said I could cancel if I didn't like the test drive. All I could do is sit in the showroom one and start it up. I went to the Subaru dealership next and was happy driving the WRX that I didn't feel the need to go back the Toyota Dealer to buy a car to test drive it and perhaps back out of the deal. It probably backfire on the Toyota dealer than all I had to judge the GR was the interior and the ERX wins that category. The negotiated pricing ended up being slightly cheaper for the TR than the premium GR Corolla it was within 1k and it wasn't the factor in my decision,. I still fell like both cars are solid choices.

Subaru knows people will tune the WRX and its a phenomenal platform to start from. Redline is actually 6200rpm in the WRX. Alot of people change the redline to 7000rpm and it really makes a difference. The new fa24 turbo seems has a way higher response to basic bolt ons and the factory block HP limit based on the 1 tuner ( in MD i believe) that Im aware of thats pushed it, i think was around 670 wheel hp. You could buy a base or premium and spend the $7-9k on aftermarket mods and make the wrx far superior. Thats of course with installing stuff yourself and only paying for a professional dyno tune. I feel like Subaru should have offered the DCCD/LSD/STI 6 speed and then I would have been all over the new TR but for what You get its just not worth it over a base,premium or limited. Subaru really worked hard on the new wrx engine and chassis and coming from 20 years of Subaru/STI ownership, the baseline for performance is higher than ever. Havent been able to drive the GR yet as my location hasnt gotten any that werent already sold..looking to as soon as possible though.

Why don’t Subaru add a bit of power to better compete? Maybe gearbox made of glass? The fa24 don’t like to rev? Turbo not efficient over 6000rpm?

WHITE Hot take on the current gen WRX: The "less fun out of the box" and "no STI" approach makes a ton of sense. Two reasons: 1) People (not everyone!) have always demanded a more refined and comfortable everyday WRX. This is easily the most comfortable and daily-able WRX ever. But y'all are correct, it comes at the expense of some fun! However... 2) Subaru knows that a huge percentage of buyers are going to tune their WRX to high heaven. Instead of building the most fun "off the lot" car, why not invest that R&D into creating the most solid platform for tuning ever? At 13psi peak boost, that 2.4 is SUPER unstressed (vs the prior gen's 23psi peak boost). So far these are proving extremely reliable to tune, and ridiculously fast. Not to be THAT guy, but you can unlock STI performance with the VB for as little as $1000-3000k. Meanwhile, the GR is almost untunable and is surprisingly prone to issues (the recent Savagegeese video goes into more detail about this!) I really respect and admire the Corolla GR! It's the more fun "off the lot" car, no question. But I think Subaru nailed the brief in terms of delivering a better daily car for one audience, and a more solid tuning platform with a WAY higher tuning potential for another. Great review as always!

You have to call around! I see some dealers doing that and others (in the same state) sticking at msrp. They have a supply now, there's not much reason to pay markup.

Dear Subaru designers, please remove the non functional exterior black plastic cladding on the scheduled refresh. PLEASE DON'T SIMPLY PAINT THEM GLOSS BLACK! PS, Please tone down the rear bumper, even the cool kids don't think its cool. PS, PS, Tyler please get a haircut, feel compelled to offer you a hair band or a hat 😂

They are removable so they can be replaced with color matched panels that are already available.

23 years old (so I still classify as a kid lol) and took delivery of the TR last month… I like the cladding since I live around a lot of dirt roads. And to be honest if you hate it that much get a last gen, the depreciation makes it a lot cheaper and they made a ton.

Shucks, you’ve missed the point (the GR isn’t just quicker…) and forgotten the golden rule of “winning’s winning.” The WRX is slower, regardless of whp or half-assed insults to a random RU-vidr! Have a nice day🤟

The TR pricepoint is a tough sell when they're making upgrades for the enthusiast community and it still comes out more expensive and less fun than the GR. They must be banking on availability to carry sales.

The wrx with just an intake and e85 tune you'll get around 400hp. A ots tune on the stock car will give the wrx over 300hp as well. Ya, I'm completely biased because I have the wrx but I'll pit mine up against a gr corolla any day

Hmm, If you’re in the US, I’m doing a travel series this summer where I am comparing the GR to various cars and I want to put it up against a modified WRX!
