Just a tip for hands free autopilot driving: You don’t need to jerk the steering wheel to tell the car you’re paying attention, just set the right scroll wheel up or down by one increment and it’ll reset the warning message.
A great review. Your previous thoughts on the previous version of the Model 3 caused me to buy a Model Y instead. I test drove both and realized that the Y had a much nicer ride. Nice to finally see Lia. Keep up the good work!
I love how the girlfriend silently grabs the handle in fear on the acceleration in the rain lol. You should feature her more, it's always nice to watch a good team!
As someone who has owned a Model 3 for 3 years and have spoken with tons of people who also own a 3/Y, nobody ever complains about the need for a dashboard/heads-up display after the first week. You just get used to it and it's not a big deal at all. In fact the clear bolded number in the corner is easier to see than some dashboards that are horribly convoluted.
It's good that you can live with it! Fact remains that looking at the screen is short focus for your eyes an not in your line of sight whereas the traffic and head-up-display is same long focus. Also there is a reason why you can get 3rd party instruments to buy for Model 3 and Model Y
Correct. No one gives a shit. I've been driving a 3 for 5 years. Fuck a heads up display and instrument cluster. Bunch of cry baby caveman that can't let go of old ways.
Yeah and those look tacky as shit and serve zero purpose. The speed is always in your right hand of sight with a quick glance. Come on dude. You don't even daily a Model 3. Heads up displays are annoying and unnecessary. @@autogefuehl
Yep. HUD would be nice to have but in t years of driving a model 3, I’ve never thought about it while driving. I do use FSD most of the time so my attention is mostly making sure the car isn’t about to hit someone or going to slow at an intersection.
What an amazing location to film actually. Looks so so good with the raindrops and in that garage. I really never seen it that pretty on the pictures. Nice review!
Great review Thomas! Thank you! I am a Tesla Model Y owner and never missed a gage cluster or a HUD in front of me. I enjoy the better visibility and the minimalist interior more than the dashboard of my BMW M5.
Same here. Not sure why some people are complaining about it. If you drive a week without HUD, you really start to like the clear minimalistic look. I think all cars in the future will come like this. Only complain is that the stalks are missing on this one. It’s really frustrating to make sharp turns. Luckily lot of aftermarket companies are making stalks for teslas.
A HUD would be better, not just for safety reasons, but for people who wear varifocal glasses like me, as you have to move your head more to put the screen in focus and see the speed or directions. Yes you do get used to it but if it’s a compromise for those without perfect eyesight.
FYI, when you push the wiper button on the wheel you have the notification pop up on the lower left of the screen but you can select the wiper speed using the left scroll wheel (left, right push), so without touching the screen.
A little late on the comment, but some years ago we jumped on an new Ibiza after one of your videos, and now with the family getting bigger, here we are now jumping to a model 3 highland ! Thanks for always helping us make our decisions for buying new cars. So grateful for the content you keep publishing. Here's to hoping if I need an even more modern / bigger vehicle I come comment another message on your videos !
As ever a meticulous review. My cousin, Tom, who is about 25 years younger than me has children of school age. He has a school run of about 50 miles one way so double that both ways. He is spending an insane amount on fuel - £500 - each week just on this. He wants this Tesla 3 simply to save on the fuel, and even at domestic charging rates - say 34p kwh - he will save a lot of money, and that is before he puts in his solar and/or wind capacity which will take the fuel bill down to zero. He also mentions the insane acceleration figures even on the basic all wheel drive. I hope his children do not lose their breakfasts on the school run….. My take is that the interior and UI/UX has now reached a level of maturity which competes, in its way, with premium brands. The underlying engineering is now as good as anything on the road. The bit I would need most adjustment to get to like would be so much on the iPad stuck in an ugly way on the middle of the dashboard. The lack of stalks with a few simple controls on the steering wheel is a huge plus in comparison to poor super premium Mercedes, for instance. I do think some sort of forward facing driver display would be an improvement, but if Tesla wants to keep the costs down, Citroen (I think) have shown the way with a small strip for driver info on top of the dashboard. Tesla really are very close to cracking a minimalist UI/UX which I think is the right way to go compared with other premium car kiddies’ space ship UIs.
After a week of driving tesla I realised that I don't need/want a driver display at all, that's just a habit from the past when all cars had tiny middle screens. Middle screen in tesla is closer to steering wheel than it feels on youtube videos.
If you really want that display, there's a way to use your phone for that. I don't know who makes the product or how it's called, but I saw it in some videos.
@@tomz5700 In reply to this and your next post, I think lec cars give us a chance to fill up from home with renewables with a marginal cost of zero, if you live somewhere where you can install wind or sun. We are a first generation which can fill up and power our homes without the wild swing in prices if you have to buy in your energy from an outside supplier. This has been brought home to those of us living in the UK or Europe with the big energy prices rises during 2022/3. That is the case for some kind of EV not a Tesla. The case for Tesla is that the quality has risen on a continuous basis since they came to market, and that they offer an alternative to over complicated and busy interiors which most European, especially German, manufacturers now seem to be wedded to. I grew up before anyone thought we needed an infotainment system, head up display, satnav, or any of the nonsense we now have in cars. If Tesla want to pursue a less is more strategy for car interiors, I am all for it.
Agreed. Keep the ultrasonic sensors (their input can serve as a validation of the optical distance estimate). While a h.u.d. might be nice, I would prefer an behind-the-steering wheel instrument cluster like the Models S, X and Y.
Tesla is doing a lot of things right, but their cost cutting are f** up their products. The fact, that you can't get the "Autopark" feature currently in Germany because they intentionally threw out the radars, which seems also the problem with automatic gear shifting, was and is a no-buy argument for me. Controls for blinkers or wipers shouldn't be on the stearing wheel or in some menu in the infotainment - it's simply too important in terms of safety. Also the fact that Tesla is still not able to bring a HUD to markt is remarkable.
I hope they never add HUD because it sucks. I would be totally disappointed if I would need to have HUD because i'm incapable of using cruise control or listen to navigation. The problem with automatic gear shifting in this video is not reading the manual.
I am impressed. It appears to be a good improvement over the last model, in which I felt car sick in the back when being driven in an Uber! I will look more closely at it and request a test drive.
Very good review I am planning to purchase a Tesla highland model 3 2024 next year .I live in the Pacific region of the USA and have the Tesla power wall in my garage and I also Have the plug charger. currently I own a Mercedes GLE 2017 which I really like very much but unfortunately The German car manufacturers are building super large expensive cars and there software especially Volkswagens are behind the American EVS Design I pay$ 4.37 For a gallon of gas to fill up my car.Its well over $60 to fill up my gas tank .IT will be so awesome that I will not have to buy gas anymore . Regards from America
I never could get used to those indicator buttons on the wheel on the new model S. It Works great for intersections and when going more or less straight, but it's a nightmare in roundabouts. I had to always look down to figure out where it was before I could use it, because the wheel would always be at different angles, and sometimes the buttons would be on the other side and upside down. Particularly at night when you can't see the wheel very well, it takes your eyes off the road for too long. It's the same when you need to use the wipers while in a steep turn for example. I miss that "panic" button at the end of the stalk. It was by far the most used "function" in my old tesla. I can 100% guarantee that there will be very few new model 3 owners indicating out from roundabouts from now on.
I have the X with the yoke and the buttons. Easy to use in roundabouts without looking. The ridge betwixt the arrows plus the knobby part of the yoke make it easy to know which button to use. It may be that the indicators are meant to be used on a yoke, not a wheel.
@@wonderboy75Indeed! You can get used to looking down all the time, but it's not safe. You can't develop any muscle memory for something that always changes. You have to look down, that's the problem here. A stalk is always at the same location no matter what, so you can use it even with your eyes closed. Try closing your eyes and moving the wheel a few rotations, and then try hitting the correct button. Anyone who claims they can do it is a liar... Now it's not just the turn signals, but the wipers and the lights too, making this very problematic, especially here the EU with tight roundabouts everywhere, which forces you to turn the wheel several rotations, and it's always a "guess" where the buttons end up, depending on the roundabout. This was designed for the US, where they have intersections everywhere. You can then activate the turn signal before you start turning. The few roundabouts they have are very large, so you don't have to turn the wheel a lot, and can actually use this without changing grip. That's not the case in the rest of the world thoguh. There are tight roundabouts everywhere here where I live, and I have to change grips when turning the wheel. That's what forces you to look down. That ridge between the buttons is no help at all in that case. This video explains the problem with this design very well: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QBFxbKTEWu8.htmlsi=iCHu174lKd_ubZtW
Thank you for the thorough review. Tesla's Shanghai team deserves a lot of credit for packing in so much refinement into this refresh. The car is clearly a big step up from my 2018 model.
For the US, it'll be interesting to see if Highland will maintain the same build quality consistency (as Shanghai has the reputation for being the best)
I'd choose a HUD and turning indicators on stalks instead of that rear screen. But nevertheless Tesla Model 3 remains the electric car to beat in terms of price/what you get.
I’ve had both cars and the lack of stalks you get used to pretty quick. But on the i4 it’s bothersome for passengers in the back bc BMW never removed the transmission tunnel bc they used a gas car chassis and it makes the car really cramped in the back so keep that in mind if u have kids or anyone in the back frequently plus the range for the price is not a lot.
@@Dfevo I grew up in the back of many bmws. We never had issues getting 5 people in the back of the og e40 3 series. I don’t see how this should be an issue in the bigger i4. But yeah its a shame they didn’t commit properly to an electric platform
@@ChrisBa303 it’s because there is also a battery in the floor so the floor is raised just slightly higher than a regular BMW plus the tunnel is still there if ur tall it’s kinda cramped imo. But it’s still a great car def worth checking it out regardless.👍🏻
Really concerned about the indicator stalk not being there anymore. I have to use roundabouts all the time and having to locate the applicable button while my wheel is in a 90-180 degree angle is completely absurd. What was Tesla thinking?
So Tesla has imagined a future where there will be no steering wheels or pedals as they will not be needed, because the car is the robot. So we don’t need the Optimus robot to drive our cars, because the cars are the robots, it just can’t make you a ham sandwich, but it will do all the driving for you. Capeesh. Cheers 🥂
FYI: I put down the order for the RWD within the first hour of it becoming available for sale. Delivery for it keeps getting pushed back. Since early October it has said 2-6 weeks.. That then changed to 7-14th of November. That has now changed to 13-27th of November.
Great review. Seems that M3 just got better in right places. Perhaps time for the upgrade from my current M3. Lack of stalks is the only big concern. BTW, it was nice to see more of your copilot than just legs😊
Having used it in Model S with no stalks, doesn't make sense to me anymore why people consider it a problem, I have 0 issues with using a swipe to go in reverse when I need to, many times it just gets in to drive automatically so I don't have to touch anything, seems better/easier to me 🤨
Have you noticed all the Used Electric Cars sitting on car lots.? I drive alot up and down the CA. State, I've noticed a lot of EV showing up in these used car lots. I've even seen newer used 2023 models. That says it all, .. evidently not too many people like their EV . Looks like more are going back to Gas.
It's incredible how they think vision distance is acceptable to ship on production vehicles. For all the work they've done to push the industry forward this is such a ridiculous step backwards. Makes no sense to rush out something that is basically worse than your own eyes.
@@carlfe4891These cars are designed to drive autonomously using vision only neural nets the way humans do. Will improve over time. Humans don’t have radar. It’s a useful crutch in the short term.
@@ken-mb5cptotally agreed. But this should be tested more before launching in a product across the globe. For something so experimental it’s taking precedence over simple sensors that most cars have
Those indicators are ridiculous. Often, on roundabouts for example, you need to signal a direction change while turning the wheel, and without a fixed stalk this becomes practically impossible. Great for the increasing number of drivers who don’t indicate, and for Americans where roundabouts are practically non existent, but otherwise a big fail.
I love it but I'm in the US. Be sure Jaguar doesn't do the same when they come out with their new EV. They are a UK car company so I suspect they will include stalks.
I would love to have on Tesla model 3. Headsup display, 360 view(birdseye), tinted rear windows, power front frunk, screen swivel rotate, black tesla emblem instead of chrome, other colors option on break calipers from factory, parkingsensors.
Other than downright stupid controls, I must say Model 3 LR would be pretty much a perfect vehicle for me. I bought Prius for better flexibility, build quality and driver comfort (including breaking system), but it was a really close decision - if there would be stocks and buttons for basic functionality, I would, most likely, drive Tesla right now.
Phantom braking got very much worse in my 2021 Model 3 Long Range after the radar was deactivated with a software update. I think my ultrasonic sensors were deactivated also last week. Vision only now. Not happy!!
If you have not so much space, however you have to park, how many times do you have to swipe the right gear on the screen?! Feels like playing Fruit Ninja
For the autopilot, 1 great way is to only use 1 hand to hold the steering wheel and relax, so that your hand is naturally forced down due to gravity. U can use 2 as well, but bias your masterhand. This way, there is a constant downforce applied on one side, and the autopilot wont trigger the warning.
@@janjepsen4268 If people ahven't been able to figure it out maybe it's not good enough. It's great you found a solution but if it requires changing the way you hold the steering wheel from the correct way to something else it just seems like it's not well done.
@@TheFPSPower I think if ur trying to test it on purpose and try to hold it straight, it's not really gonna work. But if u do it like in real world circumstances, people are usually more relaxed with either 1 or both hands, those small motions are enough for not trigger the warning.
Good review, but the stalk removal is still an issue for me. It would annoy me every time I go to drive the car. I reverse out of my garage and driveway onto the street and have to change direction quickly and having to check what the car is about to do is annoying. With my old S I can switch from reverse to drive with my fingertips without even first coming to a stop. Roundabouts are also still a problem as you point out, and similarly finding the wiper button on the wheel is dumb. The indicators on the wheel also reduce functionality - the space on the LHS of the wheel in my old S allow me to skip forward or back when playing music or podcasts, and I use that a lot. Lastly I’d like to see you test the parking sensors as that is a real issue with no ultrasonics. Where I live there are very tight spaces in city car parks and the previous tests I’ve seen didn’t inspire confidence.
It's not that bad, you can get used to it quickly. I have a 2016 Model S, and I find the stalks uncomfortable to use, and somewhat unreliable too. I think it's easier and more reliable to use the buttons and the screen. And the cameras should work well for parking. If you watch their presentation about the occupancy network, you'll see how good it is. The only possible issue is the blind spot right in front of the car.
@@andrasbiro3007 I'm curious how one can find stalks "uncomfortable" or "unreliable" when all they mainly do is go up and down? Could it not just be a bad design that they used? The logic to use buttons, that will not be stationary and instead will be going all around the wheel when going around roundabouts, does not work in Europe/any country outside of the US that uses roundabouts or for anyone who is a good driver.
@@andrasbiro3007Untill your screen blacks out which happens every so often on Teslas. I know they have gear buttons by the rear view mirror but this is so inconvenient. Its like they are trying to re-invent the wheel.
@@andrasbiro3007 sorry mate, but that is not credible. The stalks are not “uncomfortable” and “unreliable” lol. For what it’s worth I have owned a Model S since 2014 and am a founding member of the local owner’s club. I have never heard of a failing indicator stalk or gear selector on a Model S. The accuracy of the parking sensors using cameras was pretty woeful in the last test that I saw about it, and there is a large blind spot directly in front of the car. I’m pro Tesla, but am realistic and truthful when talking about them, and will call out bad ideas when I see them.
Weren’t the earlier model S stalks actually made by Mercedes? From what I can remember, as it’s nearly 6 years since I last drove a model S, the stalks were fine.
A remarkable car apparently just got waaaaaaaay better. We have one Tesla Model 3 already (best car we've ever owned), and a Toyota Corolla. The Corolla needs replacing - I'm going for this new Model 3, as it really does look like a very significant upgrade. Sleek new styling & aerodynamics. Beautiful interior, great seats. Excellent acceleration, speed & handling. Quiet cabin. Improved front screen. Added rear screen. Ambient lighting. Lots of space. And all for pretty much the same price. Tesla is the full package - software, handling, performance, battery management - really do love their EVs. For me, they've taken the fear out of buying an EV - and replaced it with exhilaration.
Isn't super uncomfortable to change the wipers in the screen? That looks like a brutal deal breaker for me. Sudden rain bothering and you having to move away from viewing outside? Looks crazy!
I know a lot of of criticism has been made regarding the location of the speedometer, but I actually think it's more optimal than the traditional method. 1. You still have to deal with near vs far focus. HUD would eliminated this problem though 2. Compared to a traditional speedometer, looking down vs off to the side is worse. I think this has to be personally experienced. Biomechanically, human eyes are faster at side to side vision, vs up and down (try it for yourself!). Viewing the speedometer off to the side (as in a Tesla Model 3/Y) is easier and allows you to refocus on the road more quickly than a traditional speedometer. HUD would still be better though, however I suspect Tesla prefers to avoid this due to the additional cost.
Great review with lots of information. I am not keen on the loss of the indicator stalk particularly here in the UK we have lots of twisty roads with numerous roundabouts which I suspect will be a real challenge. I love my model Y and don’t see me jumping to change it mainly because of the button indicators. Maybe that should be optional. Thanks again Thomas and co-pilot🙂
Tesla, if u do: 1) Put interface for the front display/HUD, and offer it as an option for extra-charge of ~300USD 2)Put the freaking stalks back, particularly for the turning signals 3) Put the cover shades on the glass roof => you will increase your sales by at least 50%, likely will double...
I dont really get phenomen of tesla. inside you feel very, very ascetic - I only like tablet size and its software. Externally ok, just ex30 more attractive per my taste, however most of the time you spend behind steering wheel right? I feel volvo ex30 follows same direction to make more savings. Price is just one of the indicators causing buyers to buy.
I wish any other company would get on board with the decision to unclutter their interiors with all the buttons and switches and vents. Tesla's have the best looking interiors because of their simplicity.
Great review. The car looks amazing. Tesla really has one of the, if not the best, cars for the price. The thing about auto gear not working does not look good though. Great of you to show it as it is. If they added radar sensors (and maybe stalks back) this car would be truly hard to beat.
Except it's completely blind in front due to removal of Ultrasonic sensors, it literally can't see anything in front or determine the distance to other cars when parking. (so good luck trying to park near low fences, tree stumps, or any low obstacle in front. There has been reviews of the M3 Highlander parked less than 1 inch away from another car, where it said there were 24 inches space between them, while an older M3 with Ultrasonic sensors had no issues detecting the distance.
When you activate the wiper from the steering wheel you can use the left scroll wheel (side action) to select the speed/auto settings you don't have to use the screen to select.
Or Tesla could have sensors that work on automatic mode you you'll never have to activate them at all. Tesla is inventing problems so they can provide stupid solutions.
I really liked how when you opened the trunk the lights started blinking at the bottom. kinda neat small stuff that gives you the feeling people thought about the customer experience with the car. I think Tesla really did well. Feels nearly like a new car with the updated more agressive look and new interior.
I drove the Y Performance for 8 months but moved to BMW again. Tesla’s are fun to drive and quick. But going +140km/h it is nowhere as silent, comfortable and sturdy as a good German car. The interior was rattling after 4 months. Doors feel flimsy. The hood and exterior material is flimsy. Paint (even from Berlin) is bad and so many rock chips after a couple of months. But for me, the biggest deal breaker, unacceptable really, was the parking aid. Removing USS leaves you with a parking aid like going back 20 years in time. It just never works and is not to be thrusted at any time. I’m going to miss the acceleration and sporty drive, but there are much better built cars. This feels like a beautiful piece of technology on wheels but wouldn’t recommend to a car enthusiast or anyone coming from premium German cars.
In order to get the automatic gear selection to work you need to put it in park first (guess also take off seat belt and open your door), then it works properly. Seen it worked in other reviews. How do you think the car can tell that you want to reverse by just going forward a wall?!?
We could re-try it with that doors open and seat belt thing, not sure if that would change anything. My guess is also that it depended on the wrong estimation of the distance to the wall. The real distance was like 10-20 cm but the camera system rather guessed 86 cm and maybe suggested to move more forward due to that
@@autogefuehl The car needs to be ”parked” first. Usually you park your car and go out. When back inside this beta-system (yes, its only beta) will guess your choice of gear depending on the surrondings. If a wall in front, reverse will be choosen if performing this test accuratly (in real world terms).
@johnw65uk c3 is good value in its segment. Smaller, lower performance and range. For the Model 3 segment BMW i4 and similar size and performance vehicles. The new Tesla reinforce the benchmark as the best value. Let's review sales 6mths down the road and see how it does. The market will determine the truth with consumers choice.
Ah, this update of the Model 3 looks good. I did not like the old design, and its wierd cause not much looks to have changed but looks much much better :)
I test drove the ioniq 5 and 6, ended up getting the model y rwd. I don't know why people keep saying hyundais interior is better quality? They both felt so bad. The ioniq 6 was slightly better but the centre console buttons felt like my transit van... The simplicity of the Y makes it look and feel so premium
+1 .... Excellent '24 Tesla Model 3 overview. .. Continue enjoying our ICE '23 MB E450 wagon... . . What sacrifice does an EV make in cold winter weather, Vail, Colorado our home plate? . . Waiting for our EV "Highland" turn, someday maybe.
The automatic gear selection is supposed to work when you get in the car, not every single time the car is on Park and you resume driving. The car does this by detecting if the door was opened and closed, and the seat belt was inserted. So at 9:10 it didn't work because after the turnaround Thomas just put the gear on Park and accelerated. Don't blame the car when that isn't the intended use case in the first place.
I've got the current model 3 and out of the 6000 miles I've driven it since July I've not had phantom breaking. I had one instance of braking when I came out of a dark tunnel into the sun, the car didn't like that. Also the car doesn't like it if all the cars in my vicinity start breaking even if I've got enough room in front. But I've never had it brake inexplicably or cause a problem for anyone behind me.
fully agree, there should be a screen or head up to the driver. Dont get the problem with close fokus, thats the same with a driver display? Was hoping you would show the indicater in a roundabout.
Great review, im done with EVs after my latest roadtrip and I promised I wouldn't get another EV until the range was over 400 miles. But this is a lovely car. Did I miss the indicator on the steering wheels? Or have I got this incorrect.
My wife just drove over 400 miles in the shortest range Tesla Model 3 available from 4 years ago. She had no problem at all. All the new ones have more range so they're even easier. I'm guessing your EV experience didn't include Tesla Superchargers.
Definitely looks far better with a new design's.... The model y now needs this update it looks old-fashioned... Still needs a driver display or ends up display badly....
ID7 in DK starts at 500k i think the Model 3 starts at 295-329 dependent on day.. if the ID7 just needs a bit of equipment it is WAY beyond 600k it is not even in the same timezone.
@@autogefuehlthe Wagon or Touring might be a diffrent story. I´ve had Model 3 for two years now and it´s so unpractical because it´s a sedan. SUV´s are just bad to drive, poor ride comfort.
@@autogefuehl yeah but that will not work in DK unfortunatly, since our goverment rules are that our taxation is NOT calculated at "sales price" but at marked price, so if i get my 400.000dkk Golf at 350, then after 3 month it is set to "marked cost" which is 400.000dkk and i am taxated at that level = same cost, what is even worse was in the "ROUGH" days during covid and later, some bought ID4´s at 400k and they got recalcutated at 500ish because they are calculated after used car prices (i think an ID4 was the worst example from 385.000 to 535k and since you are CONTRACT locked you as a customer are just f.....), where tesla because of no rebate was SAME ... so in denmark this will not work. (only once that makes profit is the company leasing company)
Can't see the Ioniq 6 and ID7 beating the Model 3. The price differences are extreme, at least in the UK, where £40k gets you a Model 3 while the only comparable priced electric saloon is the BYD Seal, which isn't here just yet.
I went for an Ioniq 5 for my first EV. I strongly considered a model 3, but no drivers display, no HUD, no ventilated seats and build quality felt subpar compared to Hyundai plus the fact the Ioniq 5 looks far nicer made my decision for me. Especially as newer ones don't even have indicator stalks. massive no no for me in the UK with the amount of roundabouts we have. I prefer proper sensors that work as intended as well. Can fully understand why people go for the Teslas just not for me.
